How to Make FFmpeg Loop a Video for YouTube Live (and Recover from Some Disconnects)

Use FFmpeg to repeat a video file on YouTube Live, configure pacing and ingest settings, and understand what recovery can—and cannot—prevent.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a video into a YouTube live stream with FFmpeg, repeat the file as an input, pace file playback in real time with -re, and send the output to YouTube using its server URL and stream key. These steps keep the video playing after it reaches the end; they do not guarantee an interruption-free stream if FFmpeg, your connection, or YouTube’s ingest service fails.

Looping the video and keeping the stream connected are separate jobs

A loop makes the source repeat. Output recovery gives FFmpeg a chance to reconnect after certain temporary failures. Neither alone guarantees that viewers will see no interruption: a process crash, sustained network problem, or ingest failure can still interrupt delivery.

For a file sent as a live feed, use -re to read at the file’s native rate rather than sending it as fast as the machine can encode. FFmpeg describes -re as equivalent to -readrate 1 and notes that it is useful when flow speed matters, such as live streaming. Do not apply a low read rate to actual live inputs or capture devices; FFmpeg warns that this can cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Choose how FFmpeg repeats the source

Loop the whole input

For an ordinary file whose audio and video should repeat together, the simplest approach is to loop the input. Put the input options before that input’s -i:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4" ...

-stream_loop -1 requests infinite input looping. Check that this option is available in your installed FFmpeg build with ffmpeg -version and the local help or documentation. The source file’s tracks and loop boundary affect whether the transition sounds or looks seamless; test the actual file rather than assuming every format repeats cleanly.

Loop video frames with the loop filter

FFmpeg’s loop filter repeats buffered video frames. Its loop=-1 setting means infinite loops; size sets the number of frames buffered, and start selects the first frame. This is a video-frame filter, not a complete audio-and-video looping solution. You must decide separately how audio should behave and check synchronization and the boundary between repeats. Refer to the FFmpeg filters documentation.

Prepare YouTube’s ingest settings

Set video, audio, and bitrate

YouTube Help lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate from YouTube’s published table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then confirm your upload connection can sustain it. Do not assume one bitrate fits every combination.

YouTube recommends RTMPS. If your encoder and configuration support it, prefer that protocol; use the server URL YouTube provides for the stream rather than guessing an endpoint. Review YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the current table and recommendations.

Copy the destination and protect the key

In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the live stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a public command, screenshot, or log. If you reset the key, update FFmpeg’s configuration to match. • For whole-file looping, -stream_loop -1 appears before the input it applies to. If instead you use the loop filter, configure its frame buffer and start point for the clip and determine separately how audio repeats.
  • -re is also an input option, so place it before the relevant file’s -i. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output; check ordering when adapting a command with more than one input.
  • Choose video and audio bitrates, resolution, codec, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s guidance for the selected setup. The GOP interval depends on frame rate; the YouTube recommendation is a two-second keyframe frequency, with a four-second maximum.
  • The example uses H.264 and AAC, which YouTube lists, but the encoder name and supported options depend on how FFmpeg was built. Check ffmpeg -version and the installed build’s help.
  • The output uses the FLV muxer for RTMP-style delivery. Use YouTube’s supplied server URL and the matching key; do not expose the key.

Optional: attempt recovery after temporary output failures

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation includes an RTMP example with -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1. These options are intended to let processing continue in real time and attempt output recovery after a temporary failure. They can involve dropped packets or a reconnect delay; they do not promise zero visible interruption or uninterrupted YouTube event continuity. Verify that your installed build supports the options and check their current behavior in its documentation. The example is discussed in an FFmpeg-devel mailing-list post from March 2024.

Recovery is not the same as looping: configure the source loop to repeat the media, and configure output recovery only if its trade-offs suit your setup. Test what viewers see when the network or ingest connection briefly fails.

Preflight and monitor the live session

  1. Check the input: confirm the file plays, contains the expected audio and video tracks, and reaches the intended loop boundary.
  2. Check the build and command: run ffmpeg -version, verify the options and encoders are present, and ensure input options precede the intended -i.
  3. Run a representative test: include typical movement and audio, not just a static or silent sample. YouTube recommends testing before starting.
  4. Watch YouTube Live Control Room: check stream health and read messages during the event. Follow up on warnings rather than assuming a successful FFmpeg process means YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
  5. Protect and verify credentials: use the current server URL and key, keep the key private, and update the command if you reset it.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely issue What to check or change
The file plays too quickly or the stream is not paced like live video Input is being read faster than real time, or -re is scoped to the wrong input. For a file source, put -re before that file’s -i. Do not use low read rates on live capture inputs.
The video repeats but the audio stops, drifts, or breaks at the boundary The video loop filter repeats frames, not a complete audiovisual program; the source’s loop boundary may also be unsuitable. Use whole-input looping if audio and video should repeat as a unit, or define and test a separate audio loop strategy when using the frame filter.
YouTube does not receive the stream The server URL, stream key, protocol, or encoder configuration may not match. Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the key has not been reset, and check YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
YouTube reports poor stream health Bitrate, codec, keyframe interval, or upload capacity may be unsuitable for the selected resolution and frame rate. Use YouTube’s bitrate table for the actual codec and video mode, use CBR, target the recommended two-second keyframe frequency (never over four seconds), and verify available upload capacity.
The stream drops despite FIFO recovery options Recovery only attempts to handle some temporary output failures; sustained network, process, or ingest failures can still interrupt delivery. Check FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s stream-health messages, confirm the options exist in your build, and test the network and recovery behavior before a long session.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to keep a computer, OBS, or home connection running, StreamNeo runs an uploaded video or playlist as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can be off; the service loops uploaded videos and attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It does not stream from a camera.

Every slot streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no quality tiers or re-encoding. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
