If a YouTube stream key stops working, first confirm the encoder is using the key for the correct stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Stream, copy that stream’s current key, and replace the value in your encoder. If you reset the key, update every encoder configuration that used the old one. For a broadcast already running, check YouTube’s error message, encoder output, and upload connection before assuming the key is the cause.
Restore the encoder’s connection to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Stream. Confirm that the selected stream is the one your encoder should feed, then copy its stream key. YouTube describes a stream key as both a password and an address: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it.
- Open the encoder’s stream or output settings and paste in the copied key. Save the settings and try connecting again. The exact label varies by encoder.
- If you need to generate a fresh key, choose Reset beside the key in Live Control Room, then immediately replace the old value in every encoder profile that uses it. Resetting makes the prior value stale. A channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends getting a key in Live Control Room and updating the third-party encoder when it reports an error starting the stream.
- Keep the key private. Do not include it in screenshots, logs, or public support posts; treat it like a password.
If your streaming software connects through YouTube account sign-in instead of a manually entered key, there may be no key to replace. YouTube directs users in that case to the software vendor’s support team; the software may need an update to work with YouTube Live.

Work out whether it is really a key problem
Check the selected stream and saved profile
With multiple broadcasts or encoder profiles, it is easy to send a feed to the wrong stream or keep using an old key. Verify the stream selected in Live Control Room against the encoder’s output profile. YouTube notes that reusing stream settings can also reuse the prior stream key.
Read YouTube’s current error and health status
Check the Live Dashboard or Live Control Room for the current status and error text. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance says errors are shown with timestamps: red errors are critical and may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems, while yellow errors are moderate and may degrade quality. Use the actual message to distinguish an ingest or format issue from a key problem.

Check the encoder’s local output
Make sure the encoder is up to date, then inspect its local picture and sound, error log, CPU load, and any local recording. If local output is already broken or stuttering, investigate the source routing or encoder load. If the local output looks healthy but YouTube is not receiving it, continue with the network checks. YouTube recommends trying another encoder if local troubleshooting does not uncover the problem.
Check upload capacity and connection stability
Compare available upload bandwidth with the total bitrate being sent. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom; include both primary and backup stream bitrates when calculating the required capacity. A network disruption can break a stream, so check for connection instability and contact your internet service provider if a connection test finds a problem. Prepare recovery for a 24/7 broadcast
A continuous broadcast needs a recovery plan, not just a working key. YouTube recommends setting up and testing in advance, previewing before going live, testing encoder failover, checking that local archive files are growing, verifying the stream is accessible, and monitoring audio and video. These checks help expose problems but do not guarantee that an always-on feed will never disconnect. Its live-streaming tips for computers also discuss encoder preparation.

- Test the backup encoder before relying on it, and confirm that the player behaves as expected when the primary feed fails.
- Monitor the stream and local recording during operation; confirm that recordings are growing and can be played back.
- Keep a usable local recording or other recovery plan rather than relying on a YouTube archive for the whole day.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explicitly says that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that stated duration; the page does not establish what happens for every longer-stream configuration. Do not assume YouTube will preserve the entire continuous broadcast as one archive.
