If OBS shows error 400 when you try to start a YouTube broadcast, first refresh the YouTube stream key in YouTube Studio and update the key in OBS. YouTube documents this as a remedy for third-party encoder startup errors generally, but its cited help page does not specifically define an OBS–YouTube error numbered 400. The number alone is not enough to prove the key is at fault, so identify where the failure appears before changing other settings.
First, identify where the error appears
Note the complete error wording and when it appears. A bare “400” does not identify a specific YouTube or OBS cause. The remedy depends on whether the failure is in OBS account sign-in, the encoder connection to YouTube, or a stream that has already reached YouTube.

- During OBS sign-in: If OBS reports an account-authentication problem before a feed is sent, investigate the sign-in integration rather than assuming a stream-key error.
- When starting the encoder: If OBS fails while initiating the connection to YouTube, refresh the stream key first if you use a key.
- After YouTube receives the feed: If YouTube Studio shows a preview or stream-health message, use that specific message to diagnose format, bitrate, or other feed issues.
An OBS forum report titled “Error 400” concerned Restream authentication, not a YouTube broadcast-start failure; it does not establish the cause of this error in OBS and YouTube.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for third-party encoder startup errors recommends getting a new stream key in the Live Control Room and updating the encoder. This is the supported first step for a stream-key setup, not proof that every error 400 is caused by a bad key.

- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and select the Stream tab.
- Copy the stream key currently shown for the intended stream.
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Confirm the service is set for YouTube, then replace the stream-key field with the key you copied. OBS labels and layout can vary by version.
- Apply the settings, close the dialog, and select Start Streaming.
- If you reset the key, use the newly generated value in OBS; do not continue with the previous key.
Only a channel owner or manager can reset a YouTube stream key. If you do not have that permission, ask an owner or manager to reset it or provide the current key. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings help page describes key management.
Check the server and stream destination
A correct key can still be paired with the wrong connection details. In OBS, verify that the selected YouTube service or server URL is the one intended for this broadcast and that the key belongs to the intended event. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key; after starting the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview where appropriate. Follow the setup shown for your chosen YouTube workflow rather than substituting a URL or key from another event. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Separate a local OBS problem from a connection problem
If replacing or confirming the key does not resolve the startup failure, check the signal before changing multiple settings at once.
- Check OBS output: Confirm the intended video and audio sources appear and work in the OBS preview. If you have a local recording, inspect it for missing audio, black frames, or other output problems.
- Check encoder status and CPU: Look for encoder errors in OBS and unusually high CPU load while starting the stream.
- Test outbound connectivity: If the local audio and video look healthy, investigate the computer’s outbound internet connection.
- Update OBS: YouTube recommends using the latest version of the encoder software.

Use YouTube’s stream-health message to guide the next fix
Once YouTube receives a feed, open the Live Control Room and read the displayed stream-health message. YouTube distinguishes critical errors shown in red from moderate errors shown in yellow, and documents format and bitrate problems. Use the message itself to choose what to correct; a stream-health warning is more specific than treating every startup error as the same issue. See Live streaming error messages.
Check OBS encoder settings and test before the event
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, and CBR among its recommended settings. The right configuration depends on the YouTube workflow and OBS version, so compare the settings in OBS with YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance rather than guessing a bitrate or changing every value in response to an unexplained 400.

- Confirm the selected protocol and video encoder against YouTube’s current guidance for your workflow.
- Check that rate control is set as recommended, including CBR where applicable.
- Use a test stream before the actual event and monitor the Live Control Room’s preview and stream health.
- If a health message identifies a format or bitrate problem, change the relevant setting and test again.
YouTube’s YouTube live streaming tips also recommend testing before an event. Cameras, microphones, and preamps are optional production choices, not fixes for this startup error; YouTube notes that expensive equipment is not required to begin streaming.
If OBS signs in to YouTube without a stream key
Some third-party software connects through account sign-in rather than a manually entered stream key. If the error occurs during this login or account-integration step, refreshing a key may not apply. YouTube says the software provider may need to update its integration when a user signs in to YouTube from third-party streaming software without a stream key. Contact OBS support and include the full message, OBS version, and the point at which it appears.
