The best way to cut power use from everyday gadgets is to change how they behave when you are not using them: enable computer sleep settings, choose an efficient TV picture preset, and switch off idle equipment that does not need to stay connected. The impact depends on which devices you use, their settings, and how long they sit idle, so there is no fixed bill reduction to expect.
Start with free settings and habits
For most households, built-in power management is the easiest place to begin. It reduces energy use without requiring a new device or interrupting normal use when settings are chosen carefully.

Set computers and monitors to use less power when idle
Enable your computer’s built-in power management and choose the shortest inactivity period that will not interrupt your work. Use sleep or another suitable low-power mode, and turn the computer off during longer periods when you do not need it. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (DOE/FEMP) estimates that leaving a computer’s power-saving mode enabled can reduce its annual energy use by up to 27%; that is an estimate, not a guarantee for every computer or household. DOE/FEMP also says routine sleep and off modes do not shorten computer life.

Choose an efficient TV picture setting
Use the ENERGY STAR preset picture setting as much as practical. Picture modes and brightness affect a TV’s power use; vivid, sports, or cinema modes may use more energy than the default setting used for ENERGY STAR qualification. You can adjust brightness for a comfortable picture, but avoid assuming that a more vivid setting is more efficient.
Decide what can be switched off
Some electronics continue to draw power while switched off or idle. DOE calls this standby power: electricity used in a device’s lowest-power mode while it remains plugged into mains power, typically when it is switched off or not doing its primary job. The amount varies by model and operating state, so it is more useful to identify which devices draw power in your home than to assume every plugged-in gadget is a significant load.

Use a switched strip for equipment that can go off together
A power strip with an on/off switch can make it easy to cut power to a group of devices that you use together, such as a desktop setup or an entertainment system. An advanced strip may automate shutoff. Before switching off a group, check whether any connected device needs continuous power for networking, recording, security, backups, or another feature. Do not put equipment that depends on an always-on connection on a switched group unless you are sure it can lose power safely.
A strip makes shutoff more convenient; it does not guarantee a particular saving. Its value depends on what is connected, how much those devices draw while idle, and how often you switch them off.

Unplug or switch off only what does not need to stay powered
For charging devices, identify whether the charger or connected equipment draws power while idle, then unplug or switch it off if continuous power is unnecessary. Standby consumption differs among models, so there is no reason to treat every charger as a major energy user. DOE describes IEC 62301 as the method used to measure standby power. A household plug-in electricity monitor can help you compare devices and prioritize which idle loads to address, but the monitor itself does not reduce consumption and DOE’s measurement guidance is not an endorsement of a particular consumer meter.
Measure before deciding what deserves attention
If you are unsure which devices are worth managing, first note which stay plugged in while idle and which need to remain on. A plug-in electricity monitor is an optional way to check the consumption of compatible individual devices. Use measurements to compare your own equipment in its relevant idle state, rather than applying a general standby estimate to every gadget. Then focus on devices that draw power and can safely be switched off.

When replacing a device, check current efficiency information
If you are already planning to replace a TV or computer, compare current category-specific ENERGY STAR qualifications and the product’s stated standby power. Listings and specifications can change; use the current product information rather than relying only on a brand name or a generic “green” claim.
ENERGY STAR says qualified TVs use 3 watts or less when switched off, compared with nearly 6 watts on average for a standard TV. These figures refer specifically to switched-off TV consumption, not to all gadgets or to energy used while a TV is operating.

DOE/FEMP guidance says federal agencies must buy products with standby power of 1 watt or less when compliant models are available. That is a federal purchasing requirement, not a legal requirement for households. DOE/FEMP’s TV purchasing guidance says ENERGY STAR-certified TVs meet that federal 1-watt standby limit. The figures describe different contexts and should not be treated as a universal threshold for every consumer electronic device.
An EPA/ENERGY STAR consumer messaging guide, dated to about 2017, estimated that U.S. households spent approximately $100 per year—about 8% of household electricity costs—powering devices in low-power mode. It is an older program estimate, not a current or personalized bill prediction.
