Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Checkout is unusually exposed to failure in a delivery app because it must confirm that the cart is still valid, secure payment, and hand the order off for fulfillment—all at once. A stock change, an unavailable store, an address that cannot be served, a declined payment, or an overloaded dependency can interrupt the transaction. The title’s “more than anything else” is a useful framing, not a proven industry-wide ranking: the available sources do not compare checkout failure rates with every other delivery-app flow.
Why checkout is a high-risk point in a delivery app
Browsing a menu can rely on information that was accurate when it loaded. Placing an order requires several systems to agree at the same moment: the items and modifiers must still be valid, prices must match, the store must be able to accept the order, the destination must be serviceable, payment must succeed, and the order must connect to logistics.

DoorDash describes its consumer checkout service as coordinating cart submission, payment processing, and the connection to logistics. That makes checkout a convergence point: a problem in any one of those steps can prevent the customer from completing the purchase. It explains why checkout has many visible failure modes, but does not establish that it fails more often than search, browsing, tracking, or other flows across the delivery-app industry. DoorDash Engineering’s account of its checkout service is a company-specific example.

Items, modifiers, and prices can become invalid
An item may sell out after it was added to the cart. A required modifier may be missing, or a selected modifier may no longer be valid. The merchant and platform may also disagree about an item price or subtotal. DoorDash’s Order Cart Validation documentation identifies these as conditions that can be caught before the order is submitted.

These are not necessarily payment failures. They can be stale or incomplete order data, and a useful error should identify what needs attention—such as removing an unavailable item or correcting a modifier—rather than simply saying the order failed.
The store or delivery destination may no longer be eligible
A store can be closed, offline, or at capacity by the time the customer orders. Separately, an address may have no available delivery option. Shopify’s general commerce documentation lists undeliverable addresses among checkout errors; it illustrates the category, not the implementation of a particular food-delivery app. When eligibility changes, the customer needs a clear explanation and a practical next step, such as trying another address or ordering when the store can accept requests again. Shopify’s checkout error documentation describes address-related and other checkout outcomes.

Payment can fail for reasons beyond the app
A payment interruption may involve a bank’s decision, payment-provider processing, store configuration, or verification. A missing approval notification or unsuccessful verification can also interrupt the flow. The app should distinguish a payment problem from an invalid cart where it can, explain what failed, and provide an appropriate recovery path—for example, trying another payment method if the current one was declined. Shopify’s payment troubleshooting guidance discusses these general checkout payment issues.

A troubled dependency can make recovery harder
Checkout depends on services communicating reliably. If a downstream service becomes slow or unhealthy, repeated requests can add more load instead of helping it recover. In DoorDash’s account of its June 2021 outage, the company identified missing defensive measures including load shedding and circuit breaking as part of the problem. It is a specific incident, not proof that all delivery systems behave the same way. The general lesson is that retry behavior must be designed alongside protections that limit how much a failing dependency affects the rest of the transaction. DoorDash’s June 19 outage analysis explains its incident.

How better validation can prevent avoidable cancellations
One design approach is to validate the cart as the customer moves from the cart toward checkout, then recheck the result before accepting the order. DoorDash’s documented Order Cart Validation flow runs validation while checkout proceeds. If validation succeeds when the customer chooses Place Order, submission can continue; if it fails, the order is blocked and an error is shown.
There is an important operational trade-off: the documentation says that if validation has not returned by the time the customer tries to order, validation is bypassed and the order is submitted. It also notes that excessive timeouts may lead to the feature being disabled for affected stores. Validation therefore needs monitoring and sensible latency handling; a check that is slow or unavailable cannot be treated as an infallible gate.

DoorDash reports results from a case study with a top integration partner: a 62.9% relative reduction in POS-driven cancellations, an 11.5% relative reduction in orders with defects, and eventual conversion of 47% of carts that had failed validation after customers corrected them. These are partner-specific case-study figures published in DoorDash’s developer documentation, not independently verified or representative results for all delivery apps. The 47% figure describes corrected carts that were eventually converted, not a general checkout success rate. DoorDash summarizes the purpose of the feature: “OCV prevents these avoidable cancellations.” Read the Order Cart Validation documentation.
What a reliable checkout should do when something goes wrong
Reliability is not just a successful payment path. The experience should help the customer understand whether the cart, store, address, payment, or service connection needs attention, and avoid turning a recoverable problem into a confusing failure.

- Check changing facts near submission. Revalidate availability, modifiers, prices, store status, and delivery eligibility rather than relying only on information loaded earlier.
- Make errors specific and actionable. Identify the item, address, or payment step involved and offer a relevant correction, instead of a generic failure message.
- Preserve a clear retry path. Let the customer correct the cart or choose an appropriate payment alternative; do not encourage repeated attempts when the problem is an unhealthy service.
- Protect dependent services. Account for latency, timeouts, retries, and safeguards such as circuit breaking or load shedding so a struggling component does not destabilize the whole flow.
- Design for both success and fallback. Validation should improve order quality without silently leaving customers uncertain about whether an order was submitted.
How to tell what kind of checkout failure occurred
For a customer, the immediate clue is the error message: an item or modifier issue calls for a cart correction; an address or store-availability message points to eligibility; and a payment message calls for checking the payment method or following the app’s retry guidance. If the message is vague, avoid submitting repeated orders until the app makes clear whether one was accepted.
For a product or engineering team, classify failures by where the transaction stopped: cart validation, store or address eligibility, payment authorization or verification, or downstream order handling. Then assess whether the check happened before or after submission, whether the message offered a useful action, whether stale cart data was rechecked, and whether retries were constrained during dependency degradation. These distinctions help separate bad order data from payment incidents and service outages, which need different remedies.
