How to Make Consistent Website Screenshots Across Chrome and Firefox

Use separate Chrome and Firefox baselines for regression checks, and match the capture environment, viewport, scale and page state to make comparisons meaningful.

For reliable visual regression checks, compare Chrome with a Chrome baseline and Firefox with a Firefox baseline. If you want to see how the browsers differ, capture both under matched conditions and treat the differences as findings—not as a promise that every pixel should match.

Decide what “consistent” means

There are two different goals, and they call for different comparisons:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Detect changes within a browser: compare each browser’s current screenshot with a reference made in that same browser and platform environment. This minimizes false alarms caused by differences between rendering engines.
  • Find differences between browsers: capture Chrome and Firefox with the same inputs and settings, then inspect the differences as cross-browser behavior. Do not expect the two images to be pixel-identical.

Playwright’s guidance warns that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode and other factors. Its visual-comparison documentation recommends using the same environment for the reference and later runs: Playwright visual comparisons.

Keep the capture environment repeatable

Use browser-specific baselines

Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() creates a reference image on its first run and compares later runs against it. Keep separate references for Chrome and Firefox: browser and platform are part of Playwright’s snapshot identity, and fonts and rendering can differ across browsers and platforms. See the snapshot documentation.

Philips 24 Inch Computer Monitor FHD 100Hz VA VESA Flicker-Free, 241V8LB
  • CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

For steadier CI results, run both browser projects in a pinned, reproducible image and keep the image and browser versions stable when creating and checking references. Pinning a CI image is a practical way to follow the same-environment guidance; it is not a requirement for a particular CI vendor.

Match viewport and pixel scale

Set the same viewport width and height and an explicit device scale factor for both browser contexts. Also choose the same screenshot scale: CSS scale produces one image pixel per CSS pixel, while device scale produces one image pixel per device pixel and can make high-DPI images twice as large or larger. If one capture uses CSS-pixel output and the other device-pixel output, their dimensions and diffs will not be directly comparable. Playwright documents these controls in its screenshot API and browser context options.

Control page state

Navigate to the same URL and establish the same application state before capturing. Make test data, locale, timezone, consent or login state, and any other state-affecting inputs explicit. These are practical test inputs to control; the specific choices depend on your application.

Wait for the content you intend to compare to settle. Fonts, images and application data should be in their expected state. Avoid time-dependent or randomized content when the purpose is regression detection, or mask and normalize it deliberately. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before recording an initial reference, and screenshot options can apply a stylesheet to hide or adjust dynamic elements; see visual comparisons and the screenshot API.

Capture the same target

Choose the capture region that answers the test question, and use that same target in both browsers:

  • Viewport: useful for above-the-fold checks.
  • Element: useful for comparing a component without unrelated page content.
  • Full page: useful when below-the-fold layout is part of the test.

Playwright supports viewport, element and full-page screenshot targets, along with screenshot scale options: Page screenshot options.

Set up browser-specific visual regression checks with Playwright

The following example defines Chrome and Firefox projects with the same viewport and device scale factor. The test visits the same page and compares it with a browser-specific snapshot. It assumes you have installed Playwright Test and its browser binaries in your project; see Playwright’s visual comparison guide for installation and snapshot-update details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Configure the projects

Save this as playwright.config.ts:

import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';

export default defineConfig({
  testDir: './tests',
  use: {
    baseURL: 'https://example.com',
    viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
    deviceScaleFactor: 1,
  },
  projects: [
    {
      name: 'chromium',
      use: { browserName: 'chromium' },
    },
    {
      name: 'firefox',
      use: { browserName: 'firefox' },
    },
  ],
});

2. Add a screenshot assertion

Save this as tests/homepage.spec.ts:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('homepage visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('/');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});

Run the projects with npx playwright test. On the first run, Playwright creates reference screenshots; subsequent runs compare against them. Keep and review the separate browser snapshots rather than treating one browser’s image as the expected rendering for the other.

If the page has a known dynamic region, use a deliberate stabilization strategy—for example, a test fixture with fixed content or a screenshot stylesheet that hides that region. Avoid hiding content that the test is meant to validate.

Choose diff settings without hiding defects

Playwright exposes a perceived-color threshold and maximum differing-pixel or differing-pixel-ratio controls. Its documented color-difference threshold default is 0.2; that is a versioned API default, not a universally correct tolerance for every project. See toHaveScreenshot options.

A stricter comparison can reveal subtle changes but may flag rendering noise. A more tolerant comparison can suppress minor differences, but it can also hide a real defect. Start with the default or a strict setting, inspect the image diff, and adjust only when you understand the difference being filtered. Do not increase tolerance just to make a failing layout change disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review and update reference images deliberately

  1. Run both browser projects under the same pinned environment used to generate their references.
  2. Inspect the image diff and decide whether the change is intended or a regression.
  3. If the rendering change is intentional, update the relevant browser’s snapshot using Playwright’s documented snapshot-update workflow: Visual comparisons.
  4. Review the updated reference as a code change. Do not accept a new baseline merely because a test failed.

Troubleshoot inconsistent screenshots

  • The same browser changes between local and CI: compare operating system, browser version, headless mode, fonts, hardware and other environment differences. Generate and check the baseline in the same reproducible environment.
  • Chrome and Firefox always show a diff: use independent browser baselines for regression testing. A cross-browser diff is useful for finding engine-specific behavior, but pixel equality is not the goal.
  • Images or text are missing intermittently: wait for the intended fonts, images and app data to load before capture. Ensure the page state and test data are repeatable.
  • Screenshot dimensions do not match: verify viewport width and height, device scale factor, and screenshot scale. CSS-scale and device-scale output use different pixel dimensions.
  • Full-page diffs are noisy: determine whether the question concerns the entire document. If not, capture the viewport or a specific element so unrelated regions do not obscure the result.
  • A tolerance setting makes failures pass but masks visible changes: lower the tolerance and inspect the diff. Keep only a threshold justified by known rendering noise.
  • A snapshot update appears to fix everything: review the changed images before accepting them; an updated baseline can record an unintended defect as expected behavior.
