For a newsletter popup built into the webpage, use Playwright to click the site’s real close or dismissal control, wait until the overlay is hidden, and then take the screenshot. A JavaScript alert or confirmation is different: handle it through Playwright’s dialog event. The examples below show both paths and how to choose between a viewport and full-page capture.
Identify what kind of popup you are handling
A newsletter signup usually appears as an overlay rendered in the page. It has HTML controls that Playwright can locate and click. A browser-native JavaScript dialog—such as one created by alert(), confirm(), or prompt()—is not part of the page’s DOM and needs Playwright’s dialog API instead.

This distinction matters: a locator for a page button cannot dismiss a native dialog. Playwright’s Page API recommends explicitly waiting for and dismissing a predictable overlay as part of the normal flow rather than relying on page.addLocatorHandler().
Dismiss a predictable newsletter overlay, then capture
Use the widget’s actual accessible name and dismissal control. The names in this example are illustrative; they are not universal selectors and have not been tested against a particular site.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Navigate to the page. If the popup is expected, wait for its dialog or dismissal control to appear.
- Click the intended dismissal control. Scope the locator to the newsletter dialog so another “No thanks” or close button elsewhere on the page is not clicked by mistake.
- Wait for the dialog to become hidden. A successful click alone does not establish that the overlay has disappeared.
- Capture the desired area. Use a normal screenshot for the current view or set
fullPage: truefor the full scrollable document.
const popup = page.getByRole('dialog', { name: 'Newsletter signup' });
await popup.getByRole('button', { name: 'No thanks' }).click();
await popup.waitFor({ state: 'hidden' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
For the whole document, change the last line to await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });. Playwright documents viewport and full-page capture, along with screenshot options, in its screenshot guide and Page API.
Adapt the locator to the actual site
Newsletter widgets differ: the overlay may have a different role or accessible name, the dismissal control may say “Close,” “Not now,” or something else, and the widget may be inside an iframe or use a different interaction. Inspect the rendered accessibility tree and page structure, then use a locator that identifies the actual dialog and control. If there is no dialog role, locate the relevant container using the page’s real markup and verify that the chosen control belongs to it.

Use a locator handler only for an unpredictable overlay
If the overlay appears intermittently and cannot be placed at a predictable point in the flow, page.addLocatorHandler() can handle it. Playwright checks locator handlers around actions or auto-waiting assertions; a handler is not a background watcher that runs without a subsequent action or assertion. For a predictable popup, an explicit wait-and-dismiss step is clearer. Prefer a self-contained action such as locator.click() if handler timing could disrupt a sequence of low-level mouse actions. See the Page API guidance.

Do not try to find a native alert(), confirm(), or prompt() using a DOM locator. Playwright exposes these through the page’s dialog event. If you add a listener, it must call accept() or dismiss(); merely logging the event can leave the page blocked and cause actions to stall. Without a page or context dialog listener, Playwright automatically dismisses these dialogs.

page.on('dialog', async dialog => {

Choose accept() instead when accepting the dialog is the intended visitor action—for example, to continue past a confirmation. The correct choice depends on the dialog and the behavior you want to capture. Consult Playwright’s dialog documentation for the event and methods.
Choose viewport or full-page capture
- Viewport:
page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' })captures the current page view. Use it when the deliverable should show what a visitor sees in the current viewport. - Full page:
page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true })captures the full scrollable document as if displayed on a very tall screen. Use it when the entire page is needed.
Playwright’s screenshot API also documents options for output and capture behavior. If image format, clipping, masking, or animation handling matters, check the API reference for the Playwright version installed in your project; the documentation is versioned and may change.

When hiding or masking is not the same as dismissing
Clicking the site’s real dismissal control represents a visitor dismissing the newsletter prompt. Hiding or masking the popup instead changes what appears in the image without performing that interaction. Those may be appropriate for a different task, but they should not be presented as equivalent when the goal is a screenshot after dismissal.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The locator times out. The popup may not have appeared yet, or its role, accessible name, or button label differs from the example. Inspect the actual page and use its rendered names. If appearance is unpredictable, consider a locator handler rather than assuming the overlay is present at a fixed point.
- The click runs but the popup still covers the page. Wait for the overlay to reach the hidden state before capturing. If it remains visible, confirm the click targeted the widget’s actual dismissal control rather than a similarly named page control.
- The click or another page action stalls. A native JavaScript dialog may be open. Handle its
dialogevent and callaccept()ordismiss(); a listener that only logs the dialog can leave the page waiting. - The screenshot misses content below the fold. Use
fullPage: trueif the requested result is the entire scrollable document; the default capture is the current view. - A locator handler seems not to run. Handlers are checked around actions or auto-waiting assertions, not continuously in the background. Ensure the flow performs an action or assertion while the overlay is present.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an API call instead of configuring browser automation, ScreenshotNeo takes a website URL and returns a screenshot or PDF. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
