Navigate a Playwright page, then call await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' }). That saves the current viewport as an image. Use fullPage: true for the entire scrollable page, omit path to receive image bytes as a Buffer, or take a screenshot of a specific element with a locator.
Capture a website screenshot with Playwright Test
This minimal TypeScript test opens a page in the Playwright-managed browser and saves a PNG:

Run the test with npx playwright test. The file is written relative to the process working directory unless you provide a different path.
Choose what to capture
Viewport or full page
By default, page.screenshot() captures the current viewport. To capture the full scrollable document, opt in to full-page mode:

Use clip to capture a rectangle within the page, or use a locator when you want a particular component:

Save an image or use its Buffer
Supply path to write the screenshot to disk. If you leave out path, the call returns a Node.js Buffer, which you can pass to another library, upload, or store yourself:

The output file extension determines the image type when type is not separately specified. The quality option applies to JPEG and WebP, not PNG:

Pixel scale
The scale option controls output pixel density. 'css' produces one output pixel per CSS pixel; 'device' produces device-pixel output and is the documented default. Device scale can create larger images, while CSS scale can be useful when predictable dimensions or smaller output matter.

Stabilize or redact the image
For screenshots used in automation or shared outside your team, consider the documented controls for visual changes:
animationscontrols animation handling during capture.caretcontrols whether a text caret is shown.maskcan cover selected page elements in the screenshot.styleapplies a stylesheet during capture, which can hide or adjust visual content.
Use these only when they serve the capture’s purpose. A screenshot intended to show a real interaction state may need animation or caret visibility; a stable comparison image may need transient visual elements masked or styled.

page.screenshot() creates an image; it does not decide whether that image is correct. For a visual regression test, Playwright Test provides expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(), which generates or compares a screenshot baseline.
Visual rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in a consistent environment where possible. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide.
Troubleshooting common capture failures
- Browser executable missing: install browser binaries for the version of Playwright in the project with
npx playwright install. If Playwright was just updated, rerun the browser installation. - Screenshot is only the visible area: the default is viewport capture. Add
fullPage: truewhen you need the entire scrollable page. - The file is not where expected: a relative
pathis resolved from the process working directory. Use an explicit destination or check the directory from which the test command runs. - The screenshot looks different on another machine: rendering varies across environments. Use the same operating system, browser version, settings, and execution mode for baseline generation and comparison.
- The element screenshot fails to find its target: check the locator selector and ensure the page has navigated to the state where that element exists before calling
locator().screenshot().
