To estimate 24/7 YouTube viewing, multiply an hourly data estimate by 24; for a 30-day month, multiply it by 720. For example, at a sustained 1 Mbps average bitrate, expect roughly 10.8 decimal GB per day, or 324 GB over 30 days. These are planning estimates, not fixed YouTube rates: actual use varies with delivered quality, frame rate, codec, buffering and device activity.

WhistleOut provides these general estimates by resolution. Its page does not state a publication year; it was accessed on October 3, 2026. The daily and monthly figures below are calculations from its hourly estimates, with a 30-day month assumed.

Calculate from a known bitrate
If you know the stream’s average bitrate, use this formula for decimal megabytes:

Mbps × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 = MB per hour
Then multiply the hourly result by the number of hours watched. At a sustained 1 Mbps, the calculation is 1 × 3,600 ÷ 8 = 450 MB per hour. Across 24 hours, that is 10,800 MB, or about 10.8 decimal GB. Across 720 hours, it is about 324 GB.
Use one unit convention throughout. This example uses decimal units: 1 GB = 1,000 MB. Carrier displays and device counters may round or use different conventions, so their totals may not match the calculation exactly.

Why 24/7 data estimates vary
- Quality actually delivered: YouTube can offer different quality levels, and automatic playback may choose among them based on conditions. A higher delivered quality generally uses more data.
- Frame rate and bitrate: The resolution label alone does not determine usage. Astound’s estimates, for example, are 1.24 GB per hour for 720p/30fps and 1.86 GB for 720p/60fps; for 1080p, they are 2.05 GB at 30fps and 3.04 GB at 60fps. Its 4K estimate ranges from 10.58 to 15.98 GB per hour depending on frame rate. These are estimates, not fixed rates. See Astound’s YouTube data guide.
- Codec and content: The World Bank connectivity guide gives broad planning ranges of 560–800 MB per hour for SD (480p), 2–3 GB for HD (720p–1080p), and 7–16 GB for UHD (4K), noting that codec affects consumption. These are not measurements of a specific YouTube stream in India. The guide is available in its connectivity requirements document.
- Buffering and playback: Data can be transferred ahead of the moment being watched, and autoplay can continue beyond the intended session.
- Measurement window: A phone’s total mobile-data counter may include other apps or cover a different billing period from the viewing session.
Different sources therefore give different estimates. Astound, for instance, estimates 225 MB per hour at 240p, 315 MB at 360p and 562.5 MB at 480p, compared with WhistleOut’s 200 MB, 300 MB and 500 MB respectively. Neither set is a universal rate.

- Choose a likely quality and frame rate. Use the quality you expect to watch, and note whether playback is 30fps or 60fps if that information is available.
- Select an hourly planning figure. Use one of the cited estimates above, or calculate from a known average bitrate. If quality or frame rate is uncertain, treat the result as a range rather than a precise forecast.
- Multiply by viewing time. For one day, multiply hourly use by 24. For a 30-day month of uninterrupted playback, multiply by 720. For a different billing period, use its actual number of viewing hours.
- Check the phone’s app-level counter. Record YouTube’s data usage in the device’s mobile-data settings, watch for a representative period, then compare the change with the hours watched. Menu labels vary by device and software version; consult Astound’s guide for its discussion of per-app usage screens on iOS and Android.
- Allow for variation and other traffic. Keep headroom above the estimate if the connection also serves other apps or devices. The calculation is not a guarantee of your bill or remaining allowance.
Historical Jio examples are not current plan guidance
A Reliance Jio submission hosted by TRAI includes approximate observations for five-minute YouTube videos: about 8 MB at 240p and about 20 MB at 480p. These are dated examples from a regulatory submission in the 2015 period, not a comprehensive quality table, guaranteed current rates or current Jio plan terms.
