How to Make Bluetooth Headphones Sound Better on Android

Start with volume, output routing and Media audio, then test compatible codecs and stable LDAC modes. Learn when EQ, Spatial Audio or replacement headphones can help—and when they cannot.

Most Bluetooth headphone problems on Android are fixed before you touch an equalizer: raise the volume on both devices, make sure audio is routed to the intended headphones, and confirm that the connection’s Media audio switch is enabled. If the sound is still disappointing, check codec compatibility, choose a stable codec mode, and only then consider equalization or Spatial Audio.

There is no single “best” setting for every Android phone and headphone combination. Menus vary by manufacturer, Android release, headphone firmware and the capabilities implemented by each device. Use the sequence below so that every change has a clear purpose and can be reversed.

Start with the checks that fix the most problems

Do these checks in order. They address silent playback, unexpectedly quiet sound, sound coming from the wrong device and obvious connection faults without changing any audio processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Raise both volume controls. Increase the phone’s media volume and the volume on the headphone accessory itself. Some headphones keep a separate internal level, so changing only the phone may leave the headset quiet.
  2. Check the active output. A second paired speaker, car system or earbud can take over media playback. Open the phone’s media output picker and select the headphones you are wearing.
  3. Confirm Media audio. Open Android’s connected-device or Bluetooth settings, select the headphone connection, and make sure Media audio is enabled. A connection can remain available for calls while media playback is disabled.
  4. Reconnect Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. Confirm that the headphones show as paired and connected before testing audio.
  5. Restart both devices. Power-cycle the phone and the headphones. This clears temporary connection state that can survive a simple disconnect.

Phone makers rename and rearrange these controls. A custom Android interface may put the headphone settings under Connected devices, Bluetooth, or a device-specific audio panel, so follow the labels on your phone rather than an exact menu path from another model.

Use a controlled test track

Test with a familiar song, podcast or video at a moderate volume. Keep the same track playing while you change one setting at a time. This makes it easier to distinguish a genuine change from a different recording, loudness level or playback app.

Test more than one type of content. Speech can reveal muffled midrange, while a familiar song can expose boomy bass, harsh treble or stereo imbalance. If only one app sounds wrong, compare the same track in another player before changing system settings. A recording or app can have its own volume normalization, equalizer or output selection.

Choose a Bluetooth codec only when both devices support it

A Bluetooth codec compresses and transmits audio between the phone and headphones. Android provides a baseline codec and may expose additional choices when the phone’s hardware, software and the headphones’ implementation all support them. Android Developers states: “The actual mandatory codec type for Android Bluetooth audio is SBC.” Optional choices are not guaranteed merely because they appear in a menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android’s Developer options contains a Bluetooth Audio Codec control on devices that expose the standard interface. The same area can show Bluetooth sample rate, bits per sample, channel mode and optional codec toggles. The available values and whether a selection sticks depend on the phone, the headphones and their current connection.

Codec names describe the transmission format, not a guaranteed listening result. A phone may display an option that cannot be negotiated with the connected headset, or it may silently return to a compatible codec after reconnection. Treat the menu as a compatibility check rather than a promise of higher fidelity.

What the codec choices mean

Codec or control What Android documentation establishes How to use it
SBC Android’s mandatory Bluetooth audio codec Use it as the compatibility fallback when an optional codec is unavailable or unstable.
AAC Listed as an available codec option in Android’s developer interface Select only when the connected headphones also implement AAC; verify the active value after reconnecting.
aptX Listed as an available codec option in Android’s developer interface Requires matching support in the phone and headphones. Do not force it when either device lacks support.
aptX HD Listed as an available codec option in Android’s developer interface Requires matching support and may revert when the headphones reconnect.
LDAC Listed as an available codec option; Android documents several quality and connection modes Try a quality-focused mode only if the link remains reliable. Use a balanced or connection-focused mode when you hear interruptions.
Sample rate, bits per sample and channel mode Exposed as additional Bluetooth audio controls on supported devices Leave them at automatic or the device’s compatible value unless you have a specific reason to change them.

A codec label alone does not prove that the headphones are receiving audio with that codec. After changing the setting, reconnect the headphones and check which value Android reports as active. Listen for both tonal changes and dropouts. A higher-quality option on paper can sound worse in practice if the wireless link repeatedly interrupts.

  • Packaging Component: Package include a Foldable Deep Bass Headphone, 3.5MM Audio Cable, Type-c Charging Cable and User Manual.

How to change the codec

  1. Open Settings and enter Developer options. The location of Developer options differs by Android version and manufacturer.
  2. Find Bluetooth Audio Codec.
  3. Select a codec that both the phone and headphones support. If you are unsure, leave the setting on the system default rather than forcing an incompatible choice.
  4. If available, review the Bluetooth sample rate, bits per sample and channel mode, but avoid changing several values at once.
  5. Disconnect and reconnect the headphones. Confirm the active codec, then play the same test track.
  6. Keep the change only if it improves the sound without causing stutters, pauses or failed reconnections. Otherwise return to the previous value or the default.

Developer-option selections can reset when headphones reconnect, when Bluetooth is restarted or when the phone detects that a requested codec is unsupported. That behavior is a compatibility result, not evidence that the headphones are defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the codec field is missing, greyed out or immediately reverts, do not keep forcing it. Your phone’s software, hardware or current headset connection may not expose that choice. The baseline SBC path is the expected fallback, and a stable fallback is preferable to repeated pairing failures.

Understand LDAC’s quality-versus-stability trade-off

Android documents four LDAC approaches: prioritizing audio quality, balancing audio and connection quality, prioritizing connection quality, and using an adaptive bitrate. The quality-priority choice can require a stronger, cleaner wireless link. Walls, distance, nearby radio traffic and the phone’s position can make interruptions more likely.

  • Start with the quality-priority mode only in a stable environment with the phone nearby.
  • If playback cuts out, crackles or pauses, switch to the balanced mode.
  • If interruptions continue, choose the connection-quality priority mode or adaptive bitrate option.
  • Judge the result during normal use, not only while the phone is sitting next to the headphones.

Android’s documentation does not identify one LDAC mode as universally best. Stability is part of perceived sound quality: a theoretically higher-quality stream is not an improvement if it repeatedly breaks up.

Use equalization carefully and only where it actually exists

Android does not provide one universal equalizer menu or one correction curve that applies to every phone. Some devices include sound effects in their audio settings; some headphone companion apps provide an equalizer; some offer no user EQ at all. Open the audio controls that your phone or the headphone maker’s app actually provides instead of following a menu path from a different model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safe EQ method

  1. Save or note the original setting so you can return to it.
  2. Change one band or preset at a time, using small adjustments.
  3. Listen to several familiar recordings, including speech and music.
  4. Compare the altered sound with the original at the same volume.
  5. Undo the change if it makes vocals harsh, bass boomy, treble tiring or quiet details disappear.

Equalization cannot repair a loose ear-tip seal, a damaged driver, a clipping source or a Bluetooth connection that is dropping packets. Correct those problems first. Also avoid using a large boost to compensate for low volume; excessive digital gain can introduce distortion, while lowering the phone’s output may leave the headphones quieter than intended.

Make sure only one equalizer is active while testing. A phone sound effect, a headphone-app preset and an individual music app can all process the same signal, making the result difficult to identify or undo. Return each layer to its neutral or default state, then add one small adjustment at a time.

Spatial Audio is an effect, not a universal repair

Spatial Audio can create a wider or more immersive presentation, but it does not automatically fix muffled, distorted or low-volume playback. It works only when the phone, headphones and content meet the feature’s requirements.

Pixel device requirements and setup

Google documents Spatial Audio for a specified set of Pixel phones and Pixel Tablet models. Supported movies or television shows need an audio track of 5.1 or higher. Google’s Pixel setup path is Settings → Sound & vibration → Spatial audio; wireless headphones are configured through their connected-device settings. The supported-model list can change as Google updates its help documentation, so check the current list for your exact device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Head-tracked Spatial Audio with Pixel Buds

Google’s separate Pixel Buds instructions require Pixel Buds Pro or Pixel Buds Pro 2 paired with a Pixel 6 or newer for head tracking. Head tracking is off by default. This product-specific requirement should not be generalized to every Android phone or Bluetooth headphone.

Enable Spatial Audio only after ordinary playback is clear. Compare it with the effect disabled, and turn it off for content that sounds less natural or for apps that do not provide a compatible multichannel track.

Match the fix to the symptom

The sound is quiet

  • Raise the phone and headphone volume independently.
  • Confirm the correct output is selected and Media audio is enabled.
  • Test a different app or track to rule out a recording mastered at a low level.
  • Do not assume a codec change will increase loudness; codecs primarily affect transmission, not the headphone’s amplifier setting.

The sound is muffled or lacks detail

  • Check the physical fit and ear-tip seal. A poor seal can remove bass and make outside noise mask detail.
  • Compare the default sound with a small EQ adjustment in the phone or headphone app, if available.
  • Try the phone’s default codec and then a mutually supported optional codec, changing only one variable at a time.
  • Disable Spatial Audio temporarily to determine whether the effect is causing the tonal change.

The sound cuts out or crackles

  • Move the phone closer and remove obvious obstacles between the phone and headphones.
  • Change LDAC from quality priority to balanced, adaptive bitrate or connection priority.
  • Return to the default codec if an optional codec is unstable.
  • Toggle Bluetooth, reconnect and restart both devices.

Only calls sound wrong

Calls can use a different Bluetooth audio path from media playback. Recheck the connected-device settings and test media separately. If music is clear but calls are not, the issue may be specific to the calling app, microphone mode or the headset’s call profile rather than its media codec.

Audio is delayed

Wireless processing can add latency, especially with video, games or accessibility audio features. Google’s Sound Amplifier guidance notes that some Bluetooth headphones may produce delayed or lower-quality audio with that feature. If delay or quality remains unacceptable, test another headphone set or wired headphones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One side is quieter

First check the headphone fit, each earbud’s charge and the phone’s left-right balance or accessibility controls if your device provides them. Reconnect and test a different recording. If the imbalance follows the same earbud across devices, software changes are unlikely to be a complete fix and the hardware may need service or replacement.

Know when the headphones are the limiting factor

After volume, routing, connection and codec checks, the hardware itself may be the practical limit. The evidence does not support a guaranteed software cure for a poor driver, damaged earbud, weak seal, aggressive built-in processing or a headphone implementation that lacks the codec you want.

Google’s Sound Amplifier guidance specifically suggests trying a different set or switching to wired headphones when some Bluetooth models produce delayed or lower-quality audio. Treat that as a late-stage option after the basic checks, not as a promise that any replacement will sound better.

What to compare if you replace the headphones

Comparison Questions to ask
Fit and seal Do the ear tips or cushions fit securely without pressure? Does the seal remain consistent while walking or talking?
Sound profile and controls Does the manufacturer’s app provide an equalizer or useful presets? Can you save and restore a neutral setting?
Codec and feature compatibility Does the headset support the codec and Android features your phone actually implements, including any Spatial Audio requirements?

Choose based on the combination that matches your phone and listening habits, not on a codec name alone. A stable, well-sealed headset using a compatible baseline codec can be more satisfying than an unstable connection using a theoretically higher-quality option.

A repeatable troubleshooting checklist

  1. Raise volume on the phone and headphones.
  2. Select the headphones as the active media output.
  3. Enable Media audio for that connection.
  4. Toggle Bluetooth, verify pairing, and restart both devices.
  5. Test a familiar track at a moderate level.
  6. Inspect Bluetooth Audio Codec in Developer options and use only a codec supported by both devices.
  7. Test LDAC quality, balanced, adaptive or connection-focused modes according to connection stability.
  8. Use only the EQ controls available on your phone or headphone app; make small changes and compare with the original.
  9. Enable Spatial Audio only when your exact phone, headphones and content qualify.
  10. If delay or poor quality persists, test another headphone set or wired headphones.

This order prevents a software effect from hiding a routing error and prevents a demanding codec mode from being blamed for a problem caused by fit or hardware. It also leaves you with a known-good baseline whenever you need to troubleshoot again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make Bluetooth headphones louder on Android?

Raise the media volume on the phone and the independent volume on the headphones, then verify that the intended headphones are selected as the media output and that Media audio is enabled. A codec change is not a reliable loudness control. Test another track or app before applying EQ.

How do I change the Bluetooth audio codec on Android?

Open Settings, enter Developer options, choose Bluetooth Audio Codec, select a codec supported by both the phone and headphones, reconnect, and confirm the active value. If the option is missing or reverts, leave the system default in place rather than forcing an incompatible codec.

Which Bluetooth codec is best for Android?

There is no universal best codec. SBC is Android’s mandatory Bluetooth audio codec and is the compatibility fallback. AAC, aptX, aptX HD and LDAC can be used only when both devices implement them. Judge the result by stable playback as well as sound.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does LDAC keep cutting out?

LDAC has quality-priority, balanced, connection-priority and adaptive-bitrate approaches. Distance, walls, nearby radio traffic and the phone’s position can weaken the link. Move the phone closer, then switch to balanced, adaptive or connection-priority mode until interruptions stop.

Does Spatial Audio improve every Bluetooth headphone?

No. It is an optional effect with phone, headphone and content requirements. Google’s Pixel guidance requires supported devices and movies or shows with 5.1 or higher audio tracks. Pixel Buds head tracking additionally requires Pixel Buds Pro or Pro 2 with a Pixel 6 or newer, and it is off by default.

Why do my headphones sound good for music but bad for calls?

Calls can use a different Bluetooth path and microphone mode from media playback. Check the connected-device settings, test media separately and compare another calling app. If music remains clear, the issue may be the call profile or app rather than the media codec.

Can an equalizer fix muffled Bluetooth sound?

It can change the tonal balance when your phone or headphone app provides EQ, but it cannot repair a poor ear-tip seal, damaged driver, clipping source or unstable connection. Save the original setting, make small changes and compare at the same volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I replace my Bluetooth headphones?

Consider another Bluetooth set or wired headphones only after checking volume, routing, Media audio, reconnection, codec compatibility and fit. Google notes that some models can produce delayed or lower-quality audio with Sound Amplifier, so a different set may be the practical solution.

The Bottom Line

Start with volume, output routing and the Media audio switch. Then use only mutually supported codecs, lower LDAC’s quality priority when the connection breaks up, and make small EQ changes through controls your phone or headphone app actually provides. Spatial Audio is optional and device-specific. If clear, stable playback still is not possible, compare another well-sealed Bluetooth set or wired headphones.
