Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse an exchange to buy cryptocurrency, but treat an exchange account as a custody decision, not just a shopping account. When an exchange holds your assets, the company generally controls the private-key access and you depend on its security, solvency, withdrawal systems and contract. A self-custody wallet lets you control the keys, but makes you responsible for protecting them; losing the key or recovery phrase can permanently eliminate access.
The practical choice is therefore between convenience and delegated responsibility on one side, and control with hands-on responsibility on the other. “Hot” and “cold” describe internet connectivity, while “exchange” and “wallet” describe where custody sits. Those are separate decisions.

What an exchange and a wallet actually do
An exchange is a trading and account service
A crypto exchange usually lets you create an account, deposit government currency or crypto, place buy and sell orders, and request withdrawals. If you leave the cryptocurrency in the exchange account, the exchange or an affiliated custodian normally maintains the keys that authorize blockchain transactions. Your account balance is a claim recorded in the provider’s systems; you do not necessarily hold the signing key yourself.

A wallet manages keys, not coin files
Cryptocurrency remains recorded on a blockchain. A wallet stores the private keys, seed phrase or passcodes used to prove control and authorize transactions. The Securities and Exchange Commission’s December 12, 2025 investor bulletin puts it plainly: “Crypto wallets do not store crypto assets themselves; instead, they store the ‘private keys’ or passcodes for your crypto assets.”
A public address or public key can be shared so someone can send assets to you. A private key authorizes spending and must remain secret. The SEC bulletin also warns: “If you lose your private key, you permanently lose access to the crypto assets in your wallet.” A wallet application is therefore an interface to keys and blockchain networks, not a digital container that can be replaced like a lost file.
Custody is the central difference
Third-party custody: the exchange controls the keys
With custodial exchange storage, the provider secures the signing keys and processes transactions for customers. You get a familiar login, customer-support channel and usually an easy path to trading. The trade-off is dependence on the company’s controls and decisions. A hack, operational outage, account freeze, withdrawal suspension, bankruptcy or change in terms can interrupt access.
The company’s legal treatment of customer assets also matters. Ask whether assets are segregated or commingled, whether the provider lends or rehypothecates them, which subcontractors handle custody, and what happens if the company fails. These are contractual and jurisdiction-specific questions; a brand name or a “proof of reserves” page cannot answer them by itself.
Self-custody: you control the keys
In self-custody, your wallet generates and protects the private keys, and you approve transactions directly. No exchange can reset the wallet if you forget a password. That removes a major category of custodian risk but adds operational risk: a stolen seed phrase, damaged device, malicious software, wrong address or lost backup can make assets inaccessible or send them irreversibly to the wrong destination.

A recovery or seed phrase can recreate the wallet on another compatible device. Anyone who obtains it may be able to spend the assets, so it should never be sent by email, entered into an unsolicited website or disclosed to support personnel. A device PIN protects the device; it does not replace the seed phrase or make a leaked seed phrase safe.
Mixed arrangements are common
You can buy on a custodial exchange and later withdraw to a self-custody wallet. Conversely, a self-custody wallet can connect to a trading service while you retain the keys. A wallet can also be operated by a custodian. Before comparing products, identify who can authorize a transfer at each stage.
Hot and cold wallets are a separate choice
Hot wallets
A hot wallet is connected to the internet or used on an internet-connected phone or computer. It is convenient for frequent transactions, decentralized applications and checking balances. Internet connectivity increases the surface exposed to malware, phishing and compromised websites. A hot wallet may be self-custodial or controlled by a company; “hot” does not tell you who owns the keys.
Cold wallets
A cold wallet is typically a physical device kept offline except when a transaction is prepared and signed. Offline key storage generally reduces exposure to online attacks, but it is less convenient for frequent use. The device can be lost, damaged or stolen, and a careless recovery-phrase backup can defeat the benefit of keeping the device offline. Cold storage is a risk trade-off, not a guarantee of safety.
Exchange versus self-custody wallet: the trade-offs
| Decision factor | Exchange custody | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the key? | The exchange or its custodian controls signing access; you use an account credential. | You control the private key or recovery phrase and approve transactions. |
| Convenience | Usually simplest for buying, selling, converting and viewing account history. | Requires wallet setup, address management and your own transaction approvals. |
| Main failure exposure | Provider hack, shutdown, insolvency, frozen withdrawals, account compromise or policy change. | Lost or stolen phrase, malware, phishing, device damage, user error or sending to a wrong address. |
| Security work | Evaluate the provider’s controls, custody contract, authentication and withdrawal policies. | Secure the phrase, device, passwords, backups and transaction workflow yourself. |
| Access recovery | The provider may offer account recovery, subject to its identity and support procedures. | A compatible wallet can restore from the phrase; without it, there may be no recovery path. |
| Costs and services | Possible account, trading, withdrawal and transfer fees; supported assets and withdrawal rules vary. | Possible network fees and, for a physical device, a purchase cost; software fees and supported networks vary. |
| Privacy and asset use | Review data collection, sharing, commingling, lending and rehypothecation terms. | The evidence here does not establish a universal privacy advantage; your wallet, network and applications still reveal activity in different ways. |
Neither column is universally safer. The better fit depends on which loss scenario you can manage: a provider problem that you cannot directly fix, or a key-management mistake for which no provider can intervene.

How to buy cryptocurrency on an exchange
- Check the provider before depositing. Confirm which legal entity will hold the assets, where it operates, which cryptocurrencies and networks it supports, and whether withdrawals are available for the asset you intend to buy. Read the custody, insolvency, lending, privacy and fee disclosures rather than relying on advertising.
- Secure the account first. Use a unique password, enable multi-factor authentication, protect the email account used for recovery, and activate withdrawal-address controls or delay features when offered. Treat unexpected “support” messages as potential phishing.
- Fund and place the order. Review deposit, trading, spread and withdrawal charges before confirming. Check the exact asset and network: similarly named tokens or incompatible networks can make a transfer unrecoverable.
- Decide where the purchased asset will remain. Leaving it on the exchange means accepting the provider’s custody and failure risks. Withdrawing means taking responsibility for an external address, network selection and wallet security.
- Make a small test withdrawal if you are moving to self-custody. Copy the receiving address through a trusted method, verify it on the wallet device or screen when possible, select the matching network, and wait for confirmation. Only then consider a larger transfer.
- Keep records. Save transaction IDs, dates, asset amounts, fees and the destination address. Records help with troubleshooting and tax reporting, but they do not substitute for a private-key backup.
How to set up a self-custody wallet
- Choose the wallet type for your use. A reputable software wallet may suit occasional, smaller transactions; a hardware crypto wallet or other cold-wallet device can reduce online exposure for assets you do not need to move often. Confirm that it supports the exact blockchain and asset you use.
- Obtain software or hardware from an authentic source. Verify the developer, download signature or device packaging where applicable. Never use a wallet whose recovery phrase was supplied by someone else or pre-entered before you initialize it.
- Initialize the wallet yourself. Let the wallet generate a new recovery phrase. Write it down exactly in the displayed order and follow the device’s verification prompts. Do not photograph it, store it in cloud notes or paste it into a website.
- Create a durable backup. Keep the phrase private and protect it from fire, water, theft and unauthorized access. Consider how a trusted person could locate it in an emergency without learning it casually. Additional passphrases can increase security but also create another item that can be lost; use them only if you understand the recovery consequences.
- Enable device and account protections. Set a strong wallet PIN or password. For any online account associated with the wallet, use a unique password and multi-factor authentication. These controls protect access paths but cannot invalidate a copied seed phrase.
- Receive a test amount. Display the receiving address in the wallet, verify the first and last characters on a trusted screen, and send a small amount using the correct network. Confirm it has arrived before transferring more.
- Practice recovery before holding a significant balance. Follow the wallet maker’s documented restore process on a spare or reset device, or verify that your written phrase passes the wallet’s built-in check. Do not type the phrase into an online form merely to “test” it.
- Review every outgoing transaction. Malware can replace copied addresses, and fraudulent applications can request permissions you did not intend to grant. Check the address, network, amount and fee on the wallet’s trusted display before signing.
Questions to ask before leaving assets on an exchange
- Who is the legal custodian? Identify the entity holding keys and the jurisdiction whose law and insolvency process would apply.
- What happens if the platform fails? Look for customer-asset segregation, withdrawal procedures, bankruptcy treatment and any limits or delays.
- Can the provider use customer assets? Read for lending, staking, rehypothecation, collateral arrangements and commingling.
- How are keys protected? Ask about offline storage, access controls, transaction approval, employee access and incident response. Public descriptions are not a substitute for contractual terms.
- Which assets and networks can you withdraw? A listed trading pair does not always mean immediate external withdrawal. Check minimums, limits, maintenance windows and supported networks.
- What does “insurance” mean? Determine what event is covered, whose loss is covered, exclusions, limits and whether the policy protects assets, cash balances or only the company.
- What are the total fees? Include deposit, spread, trading, network and withdrawal charges, plus any account or inactivity fees.
- What data is collected and shared? Review identity checks, transaction monitoring, marketing use, data retention and subcontractors.
Why proof of reserves is not a complete safety test
The SEC’s March 23, 2023 investor alert cautions that “proof of reserves” can be a point-in-time snapshot. It may not show all liabilities, customer claims or how assets are used between snapshots, and it is not as comprehensive as an audit of financial statements. Treat it as one limited disclosure, not proof that every customer balance is safe or fully recoverable.

Common loss scenarios and how to respond
An exchange pauses withdrawals
Do not send additional funds in response to a message promising expedited release. Check the provider’s official status and terms, preserve account and transaction records, and contact support through the authenticated site or application. Whether and when assets can be recovered depends on the provider, legal entity and applicable proceedings.
Your exchange account is compromised
Change the password from a clean device, secure the associated email account, revoke unknown sessions and API keys, and contact the provider’s fraud channel. Do not approve a withdrawal merely because a caller claims to be support. Multi-factor authentication reduces account-takeover risk but cannot reverse every authorized transaction.
A seed phrase or private key may have been exposed
Assume the wallet is compromised. Create a new wallet with a new phrase on a trusted device, verify the backup, and move assets to the new address while the network and device are safe to use. Do not reuse the exposed phrase or try to “change” it with a password.
You lose a wallet device
A replacement device can generally restore a self-custody wallet from its compatible recovery phrase. The thief still cannot spend funds if the phrase remains secret and the device PIN is strong, but any phrase stored with the device should be treated as exposed. If the phrase is gone too, the device alone may not provide recovery.

You send to the wrong address or network
Blockchain transfers are often irreversible. Record the transaction ID and contact the recipient or service only through verified channels. An exchange cannot promise recovery for an address it does not control, and a network mismatch may require specialized support or may be unrecoverable.
U.S. insurance and regulatory qualifications
For U.S. readers, SEC investor materials state that crypto held with crypto entities does not receive protections equivalent to FDIC-insured bank deposits or SIPC protections for eligible securities accounts. Do not assume that an exchange balance has bank-style deposit insurance or that a securities-account protection scheme applies to every token or custody arrangement.
The December 12, 2025 custody bulletin represents SEC staff views and says it is not a rule, regulation or statement of the Commission. The March 23, 2023 alert discusses crypto asset securities and intermediary risks; its statements should not be extended automatically to every token or service. Rules, insurance and insolvency treatment differ by country, product and account agreement, so check current local requirements and the provider’s contract.
A practical decision framework
An exchange account may fit when
- You need frequent buying, selling or conversion and accept dependence on the provider.
- You are learning the mechanics and keep only an amount whose temporary loss of access you can tolerate.
- You can secure the account and regularly review withdrawal, custody and insolvency terms.
Self-custody may fit when
- You want direct control of keys and can maintain private, durable backups.
- You understand addresses, networks, transaction fees and the irreversibility of many transfers.
- You can protect a device and recovery phrase over the entire period you plan to hold the asset.
A split approach may fit when
- You keep a transaction-ready amount in a hot wallet or exchange and store longer-term holdings separately.
- You deliberately limit each location’s balance so one compromised account or device does not expose everything.
- You document which assets are held where, how each is recovered and which fees apply.
Whatever arrangement you choose, start with a small amount, test the complete deposit-and-withdrawal path, and write down the recovery procedure before increasing the balance. Convenience is valuable only when you understand the custody you are accepting; control is valuable only when you can reliably operate it.
