Try Rigs of Rods first. It is a genuinely free, open-source PC vehicle simulator with soft-body physics, a wide range of vehicle types, multiplayer and community content. It is a physics sandbox rather than a browser game or a one-for-one replacement for BeamNG.drive. BeamNG.drive remains a paid, PC-only Early Access title, so the sensible test is to learn whether you enjoy this kind of simulation in Rigs of Rods before spending money.
The short answer
For a no-cost driving simulator you can download and use before buying a commercial PC game, Rigs of Rods (RoR) is the strongest verified choice. The project describes itself as “Free, open source, forever” and lists version 2026.01, released January 3, 2026. Its simulation is built around soft-body physics and a sandbox approach: vehicles deform and behave according to the project’s physics model, while you can experiment with cars, trucks, trains, boats, aircraft, helicopters and heavy machinery.

That makes RoR useful for testing your interest in vehicle simulation, but it does not make it an identical free edition of BeamNG.drive. BeamNG is a paid PC game on Steam, is marked Early Access, and combines soft-body vehicle physics with structured scenarios, campaigns, time trials, freeroam environments, vehicle customization and extensive modding. BeamNG’s current FAQ says there are no plans to make the game free. The two programs overlap in subject matter while serving different expectations about presentation, progression and setup.

A real downloadable simulator, not a browser driving game
RoR is downloadable PC software. The project’s official materials do not present it as a browser-based game, a streaming service or a temporary trial. That distinction matters if you searched for a “free web driving simulator”: you will need to install the program and its content locally. Steam’s general free-to-play policy explains that free titles can be downloaded and played without a subscription or credit card, but RoR’s own project materials—not Steam’s policy—are what establish RoR as free and open source.

Physics sandbox first
The project emphasizes vehicle physics rather than a conventional racing ladder. You select a vehicle, a terrain or other available content, and explore how the simulation behaves. The soft-body approach is intended to represent flexible objects, so the appeal is experimentation: driving different machines, observing handling and damage behavior, and trying community-created content. Treat it as a sandbox for learning what you enjoy, not as a promise of the same missions, menus or driving model found in a commercial title.
More than cars
RoR’s official repository lists cars and trucks alongside trains, boats, aircraft, helicopters and heavy machinery. This breadth is one of its clearest differences from a car-only test drive. Someone interested in hauling, off-road machinery or unusual vehicle types may find the variety more valuable than a polished race calendar. Someone who wants only tightly scripted sports-car events should recognize that the project’s stated focus is broader and more experimental.
Community content and multiplayer
Official project descriptions highlight user-created content, community support and multiplayer. Those features can extend the simulator beyond the initial download, but they also mean that the quality and style of available content can vary. Start with the base installation and the beginner documentation before adding community files. That gives you a stable reference point when diagnosing a control or loading problem later.

How to try Rigs of Rods without spending money
Use this sequence to keep the first test focused and to avoid mistaking setup friction for a problem with driving simulators generally.
- Start at the official Rigs of Rods project site. Confirm that the release shown is the current one you intend to use. The project currently lists 2026.01, dated January 3, 2026.
- Download the PC build and install it locally. RoR is software you run on your computer, not a game played inside a web page. Keep the original installer or archive until you know the program launches correctly.
- Read the official Beginner’s Guide before changing advanced settings. The guide explains the project’s vehicle-physics focus and first-run setup. Following it gives you a known starting configuration.
- Launch with the keyboard first. The project supports keyboard input, so you do not need to buy a wheel or pedals to determine whether the simulation interests you. Confirm that steering, throttle and braking respond before adding other devices.
- Try a gamepad if you already own one. RoR also supports gamepads. Compare the precision and comfort of the two control methods using the same vehicle and terrain rather than changing several variables at once.
- Explore one vehicle category at a time. Begin with a car or truck, then try another category such as a train, boat, aircraft, helicopter or heavy machine. The goal is to learn which type of simulation you actually want, not to install every available add-on immediately.
- Add community content only after the base program works. Make one change at a time and keep track of what you installed. If a new vehicle or terrain fails to load, you can remove that single addition instead of rebuilding the entire installation.
- Test multiplayer after solo controls are reliable. Multiplayer is part of the project’s stated feature set, but a network session cannot tell you whether your local steering and braking are configured correctly. Establish a working solo setup first.
- Record what you miss. Write down whether you wanted structured missions, more polished environments, a particular vehicle class, easier mod discovery or more predictable progression. Those observations tell you whether a paid simulator addresses a need RoR does not.
What BeamNG.drive adds—and what it does not promise
A more structured set of activities
BeamNG’s official product information highlights freeroam, campaigns, scenarios and time trials in addition to its physics simulation. That structure is relevant if you want explicit objectives or repeatable challenges rather than an open-ended test area. It also offers customizable cars and trucks, multiple environments and a large modding ecosystem.
Paid Early Access, not a free trial
Steam currently lists BeamNG.drive as an Early Access game. The developer-provided description on that listing calls the current version “a sandbox vehicle simulator with a wide variety of vehicles and terrains, with lots of modding potential and some very basic gameplay.” Buying it means paying for access to that Early Access product; it is not the same as downloading a free demo. The official FAQ states, “We have no plans to reduce the price of the game or make it free.” Policies and regional prices can change, so check the live store listing before purchasing.

Linux expectations
BeamNG’s FAQ says Linux support is experimental and may not provide the same stability and performance as Windows. Do not assume that a successful installation on Linux will behave like the supported Windows experience. If Linux is your primary system, treat compatibility as a purchase decision rather than a minor detail.
Choose by the experience you want
Pick Rigs of Rods when experimentation is the priority
- You need a genuinely free way to test whether vehicle physics holds your attention.
- You are interested in multiple vehicle types, including machinery beyond ordinary cars.
- You enjoy open-ended sandbox play, community content and multiplayer more than a campaign checklist.
- You are willing to read a beginner guide and perform some setup before driving.
- You want to start with a keyboard or existing gamepad and postpone hardware spending.
Consider BeamNG.drive when structure and breadth are worth paying for
- You specifically want campaigns, scenarios, time trials and freeroam in one package.
- You value customizable cars and trucks, multiple environments and extensive modding.
- You accept an Early Access product and a paid Steam purchase.
- You are using a supported PC configuration, or you accept the risks of experimental Linux support.
Do not use the wrong comparison
“Free” does not mean “the same game without a price.” RoR and BeamNG both involve soft-body vehicle physics, but their content organization, onboarding and gameplay emphasis differ. A reader who wants to practice vehicle behavior may be satisfied by RoR, while a reader who wants a polished set of scenarios may still prefer BeamNG after testing the concept for free.
Keyboard, gamepad, wheel or pedals?
Start with equipment you already own. RoR explicitly supports keyboard, gamepad, steering wheel and pedals, and BeamNG provides steering-wheel support information. A wheel can make sustained steering and throttle control more natural, but it is optional for the initial trial. Buying hardware before deciding whether you enjoy the software reverses the sensible order of investment.

Common first-run problems and practical fixes
The program feels difficult immediately
Do not change several settings at once. Return to the Beginner’s Guide, use the keyboard or a known gamepad, and test one basic vehicle. The sandbox nature of RoR can expose more systems than a conventional arcade racer, so a short orientation session is part of the learning curve.
A community vehicle or terrain does not load
Remove the most recent addition and confirm that the base installation still launches. Reintroduce content one item at a time. This isolates an incompatible or damaged add-on without assuming that the entire simulator is broken.
You expected a browser game
RoR is downloadable PC software. A web search that promised instant play may have been describing a different category of game. Download and install RoR locally, or choose a browser title separately if installation is a deal-breaker; RoR itself is not presented as browser-based.
You expected a free BeamNG version
There is no standing free edition identified by BeamNG’s official FAQ. The FAQ mentions community events as opportunities to win a key, but that is not a permanent free-access program. Treat RoR as an alternative for trying vehicle simulation, not as a way to unlock BeamNG without buying it.

Linux performance is inconsistent
For BeamNG, the official position is that Linux support is experimental and may be less stable or performant than Windows. Check the current FAQ and store information before purchase, and keep expectations conservative. Do not infer that a Linux issue proves the game concept is unsuitable; it may be a platform limitation.
A no-regret test before buying
Spend one focused session with RoR rather than downloading everything at once. Use this checklist:
- The simulator installs and launches from the official project release.
- You can steer, accelerate and brake with a keyboard or existing controller.
- You have tried at least one ordinary vehicle and one broader vehicle category.
- You understand whether open-ended sandbox play is enjoyable without campaign objectives.
- You have checked whether community content and multiplayer are important to you.
- You have written down the specific BeamNG features you still want, such as scenarios, campaigns, time trials, environments or vehicle customization.
- You have checked BeamNG’s current regional price and platform support immediately before purchase.
If RoR answers the central question—whether soft-body vehicle simulation is worth your time—you can make a paid decision based on missing features rather than curiosity. If the sandbox itself does not hold your attention, buying a more expensive version with additional modes is unlikely to solve that mismatch.
Bottom line
Download Rigs of Rods first. Its free, open-source status, 2026.01 release, broad vehicle roster, soft-body physics, community content and multiplayer make it a credible no-cost test of the driving-simulation hobby. Keep your expectations specific: it is a physics sandbox, not a browser game and not a free BeamNG clone. BeamNG.drive remains a paid, PC-only Early Access game with more structured modes, environments, customization and modding. Try RoR with the controls you already have, identify the features you still need, then decide whether the paid purchase is justified.
