How to Set Parental Controls for Mature Games on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch

To block mature games, apply the restriction to the child or family profile that will play them—not just to an adult account. On PlayStation, use the console’s Family Management controls; on Xbox, use the parent-facing Xbox Family Settings app; on Nintendo Switch, use the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smartphone app. Choose the local age-rating system, and treat online communication and user-generated content as separate controls.

The same age number does not mean the same thing everywhere. ESRB ratings are used in the United States, while CERO, IARC, PEGI and other systems apply in other regions. Check the rating and content descriptors shown for your country before setting a threshold.

Before changing a mature-game setting

Set up a separate child account wherever the platform supports one. Sony recommends separate accounts for children, accurate dates of birth and a verified email address. A child account lets the console apply game restrictions to that child without changing the permissions of an adult account. On a shared device, confirm which profile the child will use before testing the change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Have the parent or family-manager credentials available.
  • Complete the child account’s email verification and sign in to it at least once.
  • Write down the console or app PIN and store it where children cannot access it.
  • Check the rating printed on a physical package or shown on the platform’s store page.
  • Read content descriptors as well as the age category; an age rating describes content suitability, not how difficult the game is.

PlayStation explains that ratings can include descriptors for violence, bad language and other content, and that digital and streaming ratings appear on the PlayStation Store product page while physical discs carry the rating on their packaging. See PlayStation’s explanation of age ratings before choosing a limit.

No extra controller, console accessory or physical child-locking device is needed for the settings described here. The controls live in the existing console accounts and the official companion apps. You do, however, need the correct adult account, an internet connection for account or app changes, and the PIN or credentials that prevent a child from changing the setting.

Decide what you are restricting

A mature-game restriction answers one question: may this child account or console launch software above the selected rating? It does not automatically answer whether the child can use voice chat, receive messages, see user-created material, buy downloadable content or play at a particular time. Plan those decisions separately so that approving a game does not unintentionally open every online feature.

PlayStation 5: restrict games for a child account

Use Family Management on the console

  1. Sign in as the family manager on the PS5.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Family and Parental Controls, then Family Management.
  4. Select the child’s account.
  5. Open the control for games and content and choose the age level appropriate for that child.
  6. Review the other restrictions on the same profile, including communication and user-generated-content permissions, and set them independently if needed.

The game-age setting governs whether software above the selected level can be used by that child account. It does not automatically decide whether the child can chat, receive messages or view user-created material; those permissions have their own controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the child profile when testing. A game may continue to launch normally from the family manager’s adult account, which does not show that the child restriction failed. If several children use the console, select each account in Family Management and review its level separately.

Review an exception request

PS5 supports reviewing requests for exceptions to age limits. If a child asks to use a blocked game, open the request from the family-management controls and decide whether to approve it for that account. An exception should be treated as a deliberate, game-specific decision rather than a permanent increase to the child’s general rating level.

Before approving, inspect the title’s local store listing and descriptors. The rating describes content suitability, not difficulty, so a technically simple game can still contain violence, strong language or another descriptor that matters to your family.

Make a change take effect

If the child is already playing when you change a restriction, Sony says the child should sign out and sign back in for the new control to take effect. If the setting appears not to work, confirm that the child is using the intended account, the account is verified and the change was saved under the family manager’s profile.

Also check whether the title was previously approved through an exception. An exception can explain why one game remains available while another title at the same or a higher rating is blocked.

Change settings from the web or phone

You can also manage family restrictions through PlayStation Account Management on the web or the PlayStation Family app. The available controls are tied to the child’s family account, so changing a setting remotely does not turn an adult account into a restricted account.

Remote management is useful when the console is not nearby, but confirm the result on the PS5 with the child profile. A remote change still follows the same account scope and does not replace the need to sign out and back in when Sony requires it.

PlayStation 4: use Family Management

Console path

  1. Sign in as the family manager.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Parental Controls/Family Management.
  4. Choose Family Management and select the child.
  5. Change the game-and-content age control to the level you want.
  6. Set communication, user-generated-content and spending permissions separately when required.

The PS4 and PS5 controls are organized around child accounts. Do not change only the console’s general passcode and assume that it blocks mature games for every user; an adult account can still have unrestricted access unless its own permissions are changed.

For Sony’s current console instructions, consult How to set parental controls on PlayStation consoles. Although the page is named for PS5, it also describes the family-account approach used across PlayStation consoles.

When checking a PS4 restriction, launch the game from the child’s account rather than from an account that owns the game or has adult permissions. If a disc is shared, the disc’s printed rating remains the relevant local rating; ownership of the software does not change the rating threshold.

Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One: use the Xbox Family Settings app

What the app controls

Microsoft places the parent-facing controls in the Xbox Family Settings app. The app supports child-account setup and content settings for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. It also provides activity reports, screen-time schedules, spending controls and requests. With a family-group account setup, content and screen-time limits can also apply on Windows PCs.

Install the app on the parent’s phone, sign in with the adult Microsoft account that manages the family group, and make sure the child’s Microsoft account is part of that group. Microsoft’s overview is available at Xbox Family Settings App.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The family-group arrangement matters: changing a setting for one Microsoft account does not automatically restrict another adult or child account on the console. Confirm the gamertag shown in the app before saving a change.

Set the child’s content level

  1. Open the Xbox Family Settings app and select the child’s profile.
  2. Open the profile’s Content settings area.
  3. Look for the current game-content or age-rating choice. App labels can change with the version and region.
  4. If the app visibly presents age or rating choices, select the highest level you are willing to allow.
  5. Save the change, then have the child sign out and back in on the console if a blocked title still appears available.

The retrieved Microsoft documentation confirms the content-settings function and supported console generations, but it does not establish a universal button-by-button name for the age selector. Do not rely on a menu label copied from another app version; use the setting that your installed app actually displays.

If no age selector is visible, do not guess which menu item corresponds to a rating. Update or reopen the official app, confirm that the child is in the family group, and use the content-setting option that the current interface identifies. Exact labels can vary by app version and region.

Keep other Xbox permissions separate

Game-content limits are only one part of the family group. Use the app’s communication controls for voice or text chat, activity visibility and multiplayer interactions; use spending controls for purchases; and use screen-time schedules for when the child may play. A game can be below the allowed age level yet still need a separate communication restriction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Activity reports and requests can help you review how the setting is working, but they do not replace the content threshold. A parent may allow a title while still denying multiplayer communication or requiring approval for purchases.

When a title remains playable

  • Confirm the child launched the game from the child account rather than an adult profile.
  • Check that the Microsoft account is in the correct family group.
  • Refresh the app and verify that the setting saved while the phone was online.
  • Sign out and back in on the console after a change.
  • Check the game’s local rating and descriptors; an imported or region-specific release may carry a different rating.
  • Review whether the title was approved by another request or account in the family group.

Nintendo Switch: configure the Parental Controls app

Link the app and console

  1. Install the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on the parent’s smartphone.
  2. Sign in with the parent’s Nintendo Account and link the app to the Switch console shown in the app’s setup flow.
  3. Create or select the child profile you want to supervise.
  4. Open the software or restriction settings and choose a preset age category or custom settings.
  5. For U.S. consoles, use the ESRB age-rating basis shown by Nintendo when deciding which games may be played.
  6. Save the setting and test it from the child’s user profile.

Nintendo’s U.S. page confirms that parents can choose preset age categories or custom settings and can restrict software using ESRB ratings. The page also states that parents may override a restriction with the app PIN. Keep that PIN private; otherwise the restriction is only a prompt the child can bypass.

See Nintendo’s Parental Controls App page for the U.S. feature description. Nintendo also documents the app at Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app support; menu names and available rating categories can vary by region.

Whitelist a particular game

If the general software restriction blocks a title that you have reviewed and approved, Nintendo’s U.S. documentation describes allowing specific software through a whitelist or exception in the restricted-software setting. Use an exception only for the named game, leaving the broader age limit in place for unfamiliar titles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After adding an exception, test the title on the Switch itself and keep the app PIN private. A child who knows the PIN may override the wider restriction, not just the one game you reviewed.

Understand Switch’s console-wide scope

Nintendo’s Japanese support guidance says restrictions apply to the console, not separately to each user. A shared Switch therefore cannot give one child a mature-game allowance while applying a stricter level to another child on the same console. Set the console’s level for the youngest regular player, then use the approved-software exception for an older player when appropriate.

This scope is the main difference from PlayStation and Xbox account controls. If children regularly use separate Switch consoles, each console can have its own linked parental-control setup; the setting on one console should not be assumed to govern another device.

Rating systems are regional, not interchangeable

Do not translate an ESRB category directly into a CERO, IARC, PEGI or other category. The labels are created for different markets and do not use identical age bands, content rules or descriptors. Use the rating printed on the local game package or displayed in the local store, and read the accompanying descriptors.

Digital and physical editions can make the rating easy to miss. On PlayStation, the store product page shows the digital or streaming rating, while a physical disc carries its rating on the packaging. For imported games, use the rating authority shown for the version you actually bought rather than assuming an overseas number has the same meaning.

Japan-specific Nintendo example

Nintendo Japan gives the following examples for its child-restriction categories. They are Japan-specific and are not U.S. ESRB equivalents:

Nintendo Japan child category Games blocked by the documented threshold
幼児 (young child) CERO B or higher, or IARC 12+ or higher
小学生 (elementary-school age) CERO C or higher, or IARC 16+ or higher
中学・高校生 (middle/high-school age) CERO D or higher, or IARC 18+ or higher

These thresholds come from Nintendo’s Japanese guidance on changing parental-control settings at Nintendo Support. A U.S. Switch owner should instead use the ESRB choices presented by Nintendo’s U.S. app.

Choosing between a broad limit and an exception

A broad limit is easier to maintain when several children use the same account or console, but it may block a specific game you have reviewed. An exception preserves the conservative default for new titles while allowing one named game. On PS5 and Switch, the documented exception features support that approach; on Xbox, use the requests and content options presented by the current Family Settings app.

Common failure cases and fixes

The mature game still starts

  • Check that the child is not using an adult account.
  • Confirm the rating setting was saved on the correct child or family profile.
  • Sign out and back in after changing a PlayStation or Xbox setting.
  • On Switch, remember that the control is console-wide; test from the supervised console rather than another device.
  • Check whether the game is an approved exception or whitelist entry.
  • Verify that the game is the local release whose rating you evaluated; imported editions can be labeled by another authority.

The child can chat even though the game is blocked

Game-age restrictions and online communication are separate. Open the communication or user-generated-content controls for the child profile or console and set those permissions independently.

The rating seems wrong for the family’s country

Look at the local store listing or packaging. Imported software can show a rating from a different authority, and the same number can represent different content standards in different systems. Use the local authority’s label and descriptors rather than converting it yourself.

A child cannot use a previously approved game

Review the account, app connection and exception list. On PS5, check pending or denied exception requests. On Switch, verify that the title is still whitelisted. On Xbox, reopen the child’s content settings in the Family Settings app and confirm that the current choice is still saved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The setting changed after a move or account change

Rating systems and available categories depend on region. If a console, account or store region changes, review the local rating shown for the game and revisit the control level rather than assuming the old threshold still maps cleanly.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Create or verify a separate child account and enter the correct birth date.
  2. Verify the child’s email and sign in once before applying restrictions.
  3. Identify the local rating system and inspect both age label and descriptors.
  4. Apply the game-age limit in the correct console, account or companion app.
  5. Configure communication, user-generated content, purchases and screen time as separate decisions.
  6. Test the restriction from the child profile with a title above the selected level.
  7. Record the PIN or family-manager credentials securely, away from the child.
  8. Recheck settings after console updates, account changes or moving the console to another country.

These steps produce the most predictable result: a rating limit attached to the right account or console, plus independent controls for the online features that age ratings do not govern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a parental control block a mature game for every user on the console?

Not always. PlayStation and Xbox apply the restriction to the selected child or Microsoft family account, so an adult account may still launch the game. Nintendo’s documented Switch restriction is console-wide, so it affects users on that console.

Are ESRB, CERO, IARC and PEGI ratings equivalent?

No. They are regional systems with different age bands and descriptors. Use the rating shown for your country and read its content descriptors instead of converting a number from another system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I allow one mature game without raising the general limit?

PS5 supports reviewing exception requests, and Nintendo’s U.S. app supports whitelisting selected software. On Xbox, use the requests and content choices shown in the current Family Settings app.

Why can my child still chat when a game is blocked?

Game-age limits and communication or user-generated-content permissions are separate. Open the communication controls for the relevant child profile or console and configure them independently.

What should I do if a new setting does not work immediately?

Confirm the correct child account is active, verify that the account is in the family group, make sure the change saved, and sign out and back in on PlayStation or Xbox. On Switch, test on the supervised console and check the whitelist.

Do I need a special device to block mature games?

No physical accessory is required. The controls use PlayStation Family Management, the Xbox Family Settings app or the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, together with the appropriate parent account and PIN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use a child or family account wherever possible, select the local rating threshold, and test it from the child’s profile. PlayStation and Xbox are primarily account-based; Nintendo Switch applies its documented restriction to the whole console. Keep chat, user-generated content, purchases and screen time as separate settings, and use exceptions sparingly so one approved game does not become a general increase in access.
