You can help an older Android phone last longer in two different ways: reduce daily battery drain and keep the phone useful and secure for as long as its hardware and software support allow. Start with reversible settings and basic troubleshooting. These steps can improve runtime or performance, but they cannot restore worn battery capacity or extend a manufacturer’s update support.
Make each charge last longer
Screen use and demanding activities are practical places to start. Menu names and available controls differ across Android versions and manufacturers, so look for the closest equivalent if a path does not match your phone.

- Lower brightness and screen timeout. Reduce screen brightness and set the display to turn off sooner when idle.
- Find apps using the most battery. Open Settings and look for Battery or Battery usage. Review the apps near the top; restrict background use or uninstall an app you do not need if appropriate.
- Use Battery Saver when it helps. Turn it on when charge is low or you need the phone to last longer between charges. It can delay background activity, notifications, or some network behavior.
- Limit power-intensive tasks. Long GPS navigation, hotspot use, video streaming, and demanding games can use substantial power. Reduce or pause them when runtime matters.
- Turn off connections only when you do not need them. Disabling Bluetooth, Location, or mobile connectivity may help in some circumstances, but features that rely on them will stop working.
Keep the phone cool and avoid prolonged heat exposure. Google warns that high temperatures can increase battery drain and damage the battery. Google also recommends using the adapter supplied with the device, since another adapter may charge slowly or damage the phone or battery. Free up storage before chasing speed fixes
When the phone is nearly full, check Settings > Storage first. Google says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free. This is a general troubleshooting threshold, not a guarantee that crossing it will make every phone slow.
- Review what is using space. In Settings > Storage, identify large categories and files before deleting anything.
- Remove files you recognize and no longer need. Check Downloads and unwanted media. Confirm important photos and files are backed up before deleting them.
- Remove unused apps. Uninstall apps you do not use. Some Android versions or devices can archive apps; availability varies.
- Be careful with app storage controls. Clearing an app’s cache removes temporary data. Clearing storage or app data can permanently delete information held by that app, such as saved settings or offline content.

Troubleshoot a phone that still feels slow
Try straightforward checks before considering a reset:
- Restart the phone. A restart is a simple first check for temporary problems.
- Check for Android and app updates. Open Settings and look for System > Software update (or the manufacturer’s equivalent). Check app updates through the app store you use.
- Recheck storage. If storage is still nearly full, remove more files or unused apps that you have verified you can do without.
- Investigate recent app changes. If slowness or another problem began after installing an app, test whether that app is involved.
For app-related trouble, Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps on many Android phones. If the issue disappears in Safe mode, remove recently added apps one at a time and check whether normal operation returns. Check whether the phone still receives security updates
Look under Settings > System > Software update, or the equivalent menu, to check for an update now. To find out whether updates are expected in the future, consult the manufacturer’s support page for your exact model, carrier, and region. Eligibility and support periods differ; a general Android statement does not prove that a particular older handset is currently supported.
The Android Open Source Project’s security best-practice page says, “Android devices should receive ongoing security support for at least two years from launch.” This is general guidance, not a guarantee about the present support status of an individual phone. Check the project’s system security best practices and the manufacturer’s model-specific information.

Decide whether to keep, repair, reset, or replace it
There is no reliable repair-versus-replacement answer without the phone model and its condition. Use these checks to make a decision:

- App compatibility: Do the essential apps you rely on still work with the installed Android version?
If battery runtime remains poor, review battery use, heat exposure, available updates, and the manufacturer’s support information. Battery performance and repair options depend on the device; look up service for the exact model before buying a part or attempting a DIY repair. Google directs owners to their manufacturer for specific battery advice in its battery guidance.
A factory reset is a later troubleshooting option if simpler steps have not helped. It erases device data and apps. Back up important information first and verify that the backup is accessible before resetting. Follow Google’s factory-reset instructions for the relevant device.
