Build a small static reference app: derive its entries from the IANA HTTP Status Code Registry and RFC 9110, bundle the data with the app, and precache the app shell and data with a service worker. That lets people look up codes after the app has loaded, even when the connection drops. Show when the data was checked, because offline access does not mean the registry is current.
Start with authoritative status-code data
Use the IANA HTTP Status Code Registry to identify registered codes, descriptions, registry status, and standards references. Use RFC 9110 for the normative meaning of HTTP responses. MDN’s status reference is useful for concise explanations and examples, but it is not the registry or the specification.

Keep the first version as a structured local data file. Each record can include the numeric code, short description, class, registry status, relevant standards reference, and a brief plain-language explanation. Add a “data checked” date and a link to the relevant IANA entry or RFC so users can verify details.

Do not create an entry for every number from 100 through 599 and imply that all are registered. The registry includes unassigned gaps as well as entries with other statuses. In the IANA snapshot last updated 2025-09-15, code 104, “Upload Resumption Supported,” was temporary, registered 2024-11-13, with an expiry date of 2026-11-13. That is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of its present status; check the live registry when preparing a release.

Show what the code means—and what it does not
HTTP status codes are three-digit values from 100 through 599. Their first digit identifies one of five classes:
- 1xx: informational
- 2xx: successful
- 3xx: redirection
- 4xx: client error
- 5xx: server error
Use the class as a useful first clue, not as a complete explanation. The reason phrase alone does not capture the response’s semantics or the surrounding request context. Link to the applicable specification and avoid presenting a locally invented or unregistered server response as an IANA-standard code.

For an unfamiliar but valid status code, RFC 9110 requires clients to understand its class and treat it as equivalent to the x00 code of that class. A reference tool should therefore show the class and explain that fallback behavior, while directing users to the registry rather than pretending to know the intent of every custom response.
Make distinctions useful in practice
- 401 versus 403: 401 indicates that authentication is required; 403 means the server refuses access. Avoid reducing both to “permission problem.”
- 302 versus 307: 307 preserves the request method during redirection. A short explanation and a link to the specification are more useful than a bare label.
The registry also distinguishes special cases: its snapshot marks 306 and 418 unused and 510 obsoleted. Treat these as registry-specific statuses, not ordinary active responses; confirm mutable entries against the live sources before shipping data.

Design the lookup for immediate use
Make exact-code search the most prominent control. A developer asking “What does HTTP 404 mean?” should be able to enter 404 and reach a concise explanation without first navigating a broad catalogue.
- Provide class filters for 1xx through 5xx and a browsable list for exploration.
- Show the number, class, registry status, explanation, and relevant source links together in the detail view.
- Handle incomplete input—such as “40”—without implying it is a complete code. Explain when an entered value is outside the valid 100–599 range.
- Keep keyboard focus visible and avoid unnecessary interface complexity.
Because the registry is finite and small enough to bundle for this purpose, the basic lookup can read local data instead of making a network request for every search. This is an architectural choice, not a measured speed claim; no benchmark establishes a percentage improvement.

Make the app shell and data available offline
A service worker can cache resources during installation and serve cached responses through its fetch handling. For a single-page reference, precache the HTML shell, CSS, JavaScript, icons, and bundled status-code data. Service workers require a secure context, such as HTTPS. See MDN’s service-worker guide for the install, cache, and fetch pattern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Bundle the reference data. Keep the data file alongside the application resources so the lookup does not depend on a live registry request.
- Precache the required resources during service-worker installation. Include every file needed to open the app and search its bundled data.
- Serve cached app resources on later requests. Test that the shell and lookup still work after the initial load when the device has no connection.
- Version the cache. During activation, remove obsolete cache versions so updated app resources do not leave old caches behind.
- Expose the snapshot date in the interface. Users should be able to tell how old the bundled registry data is while offline.
Offline support makes the last available snapshot accessible; it does not synchronize the registry. If you later add live updates, keep refresh behavior separate from lookup: return the current cached data immediately, then offer or perform an update when online, and display the checked date for the data in use.

Choose the simplest update model that fits
| Approach | Lookup when offline | Freshness signal | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bundled data with a precached app shell | Works after the required app resources have been loaded and cached. | Show the bundled data’s checked date. | Simple lookup path; entries can become stale until a new app/data version is delivered. |
| Bundled data plus an online refresh | The cached snapshot remains available without a connection. | Show the checked date and whether an update is available or completed. | Adds update behavior and failure cases; a refresh should not block access to cached results. |
These are implementation trade-offs, not a measured speed ranking. Choose based on whether offline lookup, freshness, or update simplicity matters most, and make the status of each entry—registered, temporary, unassigned, or otherwise noted—clear enough that users do not mistake a cached snapshot for a complete statement of current standards.
