How to Make an FFmpeg YouTube Live Stream Reconnect After an Internet Outage

FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect flags help with HTTP inputs, not a failed YouTube RTMP output. For output recovery, test the documented FIFO muxer pattern with your build and stream setup.

First identify which connection failed. For a dropped HTTP input, FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options may help it reconnect to the source. For a failure writing the RTMP output to YouTube, those HTTP options are not the fix: FFmpeg documents an output-recovery approach using its FIFO pseudo-muxer. Neither approach guarantees an uninterrupted YouTube session, so test your exact FFmpeg build and streaming workflow before relying on it.

Identify whether the input or YouTube output failed

Check the FFmpeg log around the disconnect. A failure reading the media source is an input-side problem; a failure writing to the RTMP destination is an output-side problem. The distinction matters because FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options apply to the HTTP protocol, while YouTube ingest is an RTMP output in the command pattern below. The options are not interchangeable. What failed Relevant approach What to check
FFmpeg cannot read an HTTP source HTTP protocol reconnect options Whether the source is available again and whether your installed FFmpeg supports the options you use.
FFmpeg cannot write to YouTube over RTMP FIFO muxer output recovery FIFO support in your build, the ingest URL and key, and the behavior of the YouTube live event after reconnecting.

For a dropped HTTP input, use HTTP reconnect options

FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol provides options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, and controls for retry delays and limits. They are intended for HTTP connections, so use them when FFmpeg is reading an HTTP input that disconnects—not as a substitute for RTMP output recovery. Consult the FFmpeg HTTP protocol options for the syntax and behavior supported by your installed version.

The documentation explains reconnect_at_eof this way: “If set then eof is treated like an error and causes reconnection, this is useful for live / endless streams.” This is useful only when EOF occurs on the relevant HTTP input; it does not make a separate YouTube RTMP output reconnect.

For a failed YouTube RTMP output, try FIFO recovery

FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer documentation shows an output-side recovery pattern for temporary output failures. Its example enables attempt_recovery and sets recovery_wait_time to one second, with the intent of continuing processing at real-time rate and attempting recovery after a temporary failure. FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation

Documented example

ffmpeg -re -i ... -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
  -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
  -map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name

This is a documentation example, not a tested command for every media source, FFmpeg build, or YouTube account. Replace -i ... with your actual input and replace the illustrative RTMP destination with the current YouTube ingest URL and your stream key. Keep the example’s codec, mapping, and other options only if they suit your source and streaming setup.

Check your FFmpeg build before going live

  1. Run ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo locally and check that the FIFO muxer and the options you intend to use are available.
  2. Prepare the command with your actual input, YouTube server URL, stream key, and suitable encoding settings.
  3. Run a private or otherwise safe test stream. Watch the FFmpeg log and YouTube Live Control Room while you test.
  4. Briefly interrupt the network in a controlled test. Note whether FFmpeg recovers, whether the same YouTube live event continues, and whether you need to start a new event.

-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 appears in the documented example, so do not assume every packet will be preserved during an outage. Buffer overflow and recovery timing can affect what reaches YouTube. The sources do not establish a universal outage duration after which a session will or will not resume.

Verify YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key

In YouTube Live Control Room, use the current server URL and stream key in your encoder configuration. YouTube notes that returning users may be able to load previous settings, including a previous key; verify that the values in FFmpeg are the ones for the live setup you are using. If YouTube reports that the key is invalid, its troubleshooting guidance is to obtain a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube stream troubleshooting

Test upload capacity and monitor stream health

A retry cannot compensate for a connection that is consistently unable to carry your stream. YouTube recommends choosing quality that is reliable for the available internet connection, testing upload bitrate, and testing audio and motion representative of the planned stream. Monitor stream health and messages in Live Control Room while live. These checks help diagnose or reduce connection and configuration issues; they do not guarantee that an outage will resume the same YouTube session. YouTube live encoder settings and stream health

Troubleshoot common reconnect failures

Symptom Likely cause What to do
HTTP reconnect flags have no effect on the YouTube connection The failing connection is the RTMP output, not an HTTP input. Use an output-side recovery approach such as the documented FIFO pattern, then test the actual setup.
FFmpeg rejects a FIFO option or muxer Your installed build may not include or recognize the required FIFO functionality or option. Check ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo and use a build that supports the options before depending on this method.
YouTube reports an invalid stream key The key in the command is invalid or no longer matches the Live Control Room setup. Get the current key in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg.
FFmpeg reconnects but the live event does not continue as expected Recovery of the output connection does not establish that YouTube will preserve the same event after every interruption. Observe FFmpeg logs and Live Control Room during a controlled test; determine whether your workflow needs a new event.
Stream health warns about the connection Available upload capacity may not reliably support the selected stream quality. Test upload bitrate, choose quality suitable for the connection, and monitor representative audio and motion.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded video looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
