FFmpeg’s concat demuxer has no documented switch to skip a playlist entry when the file fails to open. The reliable workaround is to check each entry first, omit files that are missing, unreadable, or unparseable, and give FFmpeg a filtered concat list. This is a preflight workflow—not a concat-demuxer skip option—and it does not resolve incompatible streams among the files that remain.
Build a filtered concat playlist before starting FFmpeg
The concat demuxer reads a script of files and directives, then processes the files in sequence as if their packets had been muxed together, adjusting timestamps across entries. Its documented options include safe, auto_convert, and segment_time_metadata; none is documented as a way to ignore an input-open failure and continue. The current documentation is rolling, so verify the options for the FFmpeg version installed on your system: FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

- Start from your source playlist. Generate a new concat script from it rather than passing every original row through unchanged.
- Check each path where FFmpeg will run. Confirm that the file exists and is readable by the user and process running FFmpeg. Omit entries that fail either check.
- Probe entries if parseability matters. A file may exist and be readable but still contain media FFmpeg cannot parse. Run an FFmpeg probe/preflight on each candidate and omit entries whose probe fails. This is a practical workflow recommendation, not a documented concat-demuxer feature.
- Write only passing entries to the concat script. Use the concat script format and path rules documented for your installed version, then point the concat demuxer at that filtered script.
- Run FFmpeg with the filtered script. If it still fails or the output has artifacts, check stream compatibility and duration metadata in the files that passed preflight.
The exact preflight commands depend on how your playlist is stored and the operating system and shell you use. The key is to generate the filtered script before FFmpeg consumes it; the demuxer itself is not being told to skip a failed row.

A file that opens successfully is not necessarily suitable for concatenation with the others. The FFmpeg documentation warns: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Filtering out an unreadable file will not fix mismatched streams in the remaining files. The documentation also warns that inaccurate durations can cause artifacts.

- Missing or unreadable file: Exclude it during path and permission checks.
- File exists but cannot be parsed: Use a probe/preflight and exclude it if the probe fails.
- Every file opens, but concat fails or looks wrong: Investigate stream layout, codecs, time bases, and duration metadata rather than treating it as an open-failure problem.
Do not use concat options as skip switches
-safe 0 changes path acceptance
The demuxer’s safe setting concerns which playlist paths and directives are accepted. Its default is 1; setting it to 0 accepts any filename. It does not make a missing, unreadable, or invalid media file work.
auto_convert is limited, not a general repair
The documented conversion is adding the H.264 MP4-to-Annex-B bitstream filter for H.264 streams in MP4, particularly useful when resolutions change. It is not a general-purpose file repair option and does not skip entries that fail to open.

Choose the right kind of concatenation
