To make an Enigmatica 8 server for Minecraft 1.18.2, install 64-bit Java 17, download the Enigmatica 8 Server 2.5.1 pack, extract it into a normal local folder, run the supplied start script, accept the EULA by entering TRUE, let the first setup finish, then run the script again. Plan for at least 5 GB of server memory; 6 GB is the recommended allocation, and 8 GB is appropriate when players use HD resource packs or shaders.

What you need before installing
Enigmatica 8 is a large Forge-based modpack, so its server requirements are substantially higher than those of a vanilla Minecraft server. The Enigmatica Modpacks Wiki describes 4–8 GB as the usual range for modded servers and advises against hosting the pack on the same computer that you use to play it. A separate machine avoids competition between the client and server for processor time, memory and disk access.
- A computer or rented server with adequate CPU capacity, storage and free memory.
- A 64-bit Java installation. Enigmatica requires 64-bit Java, not a 32-bit runtime.
- Java 17: Temurin 17 LTS on Windows or macOS, or OpenJDK 17 on Linux.
- A local folder that is not managed by OneDrive or another synchronization service.
- The Enigmatica 8 server archive for Minecraft 1.18.2, specifically server release 2.5.1 listed on CurseForge.
- Permission to run scripts and, for a home server, the ability to configure your network and keep the machine online.
Keep the server files in an empty folder dedicated to this instance. Do not mix them with another modpack or an existing vanilla world. A clean directory makes updates, backups and recovery much safer.

Install the correct Java version
Enigmatica’s Java guide maps Minecraft 1.17 and later to Java 17. The server pack therefore needs a 64-bit Java 17 runtime, even if another Java version is already installed for a different game or application.
Windows
- Download a 64-bit Temurin 17 LTS build from Adoptium.
- Install it using the normal Windows installer and allow the installer to add Java to the system path when that option is offered.
- Open a new Command Prompt and run
java -version. - Confirm that the output identifies Java 17 and a 64-bit runtime. If Windows reports that
javais not recognized, reinstall Java or add the Java 17bindirectory to the PATH environment variable.
macOS
- Install the macOS 64-bit Temurin 17 LTS package recommended by the Enigmatica Java guide.
- Close and reopen Terminal so the new Java installation is visible.
- Run
java -versionand verify that the major version is 17. - On Apple-silicon Macs, use the build intended for your architecture, or the compatible package supplied by the distributor. The important requirements are Java 17 and 64-bit support.
Ubuntu or Debian Linux
- Refresh package metadata if necessary.
- Install the Java 17 runtime with:
sudo apt-get install openjdk-17-jre- Check the active runtime with
java -version. - If several Java versions are installed, select Java 17 with your distribution’s alternatives tool before starting the server.
Do not try to solve a Java error by installing a random newer or older release. A server that starts with the wrong major version can fail during Forge loading, while a 32-bit runtime cannot provide the address space the pack expects.

Download Enigmatica 8 Server 2.5.1
Open the Enigmatica 8 project on CurseForge and choose the server download listed for Minecraft 1.18.2. The release identified in the project information is Enigmatica 8 Server 2.5.1. Download the server archive rather than the ordinary client profile.
After the download completes, create an empty folder such as Enigmatica8-Server in a location controlled by you. Extract every file from the archive into that folder. Do not run the archive directly, and do not leave files nested in an extra directory level such as Enigmatica8-Server/Enigmatica8-Server/ unless the pack’s own archive is structured that way.

The official server guide specifically warns against placing the instance in OneDrive or another synchronized folder. Synchronization can lock installer files while Forge or the pack is writing them, causing an incomplete first installation. A normal local folder on the server disk is the safer choice.
Run the first server setup
The archive includes separate startup scripts for each operating system. Use the script for the system on which the server files are located.
- Open the extracted server folder and confirm that the startup files are present.
- On Windows, double-click
start-server.bat, or launch it from Command Prompt. - On macOS or Linux, run
start-server.sh. On Linux and macOS you may need to make it executable first withchmod +x start-server.sh. - Wait while Forge and the pack complete their initial installation. The first run can take noticeably longer than later starts because files and server data are being generated.
- When the console asks you to accept the Minecraft EULA, type
TRUEexactly and press Enter. The official guide documents this capitalization. - Allow the process to continue until the server has fully started. Then shut it down cleanly from the console rather than terminating the process abruptly.
- Run the same start script a second time. Enigmatica’s guide documents this second run as a workaround for first-start console input; it also ensures that all files created during the initial setup are loaded normally.
If the script window closes immediately, start it from an already-open Command Prompt or Terminal so that the error remains visible. The message usually identifies whether Java is missing, the script lacks permission, or a generated file is being held by synchronization software.
Set the server’s memory allocation
Memory is the most important capacity decision for an Enigmatica 8 server. The allocation table in the Enigmatica documentation gives these targets:

A separate Enigmatica hosting note says that at least 4 GB is suggested for 5–7 players. That figure is a player-count guideline from the hosting discussion, whereas the pack’s allocation table lists 5 GB as the minimum. In practice, follow the stricter pack table: begin at 6 GB when the machine can spare it, and move to 8 GB for the documented HD or shader use case.
Leave memory for the operating system and other services. Giving Java every available gigabyte can make the host swap or become unresponsive. If the startup script exposes minimum and maximum heap settings, set them according to the table and keep the values consistent rather than repeatedly changing them while diagnosing an unrelated problem.

Complete the basic server configuration
Once the second start reaches the normal server console, the world and configuration files will be available in the server folder. Stop the server before editing files so that your changes are not overwritten on shutdown.
Choose a stable operating location
Keep the instance on a disk with enough free space for the world, Forge libraries, logs and backups. Avoid removable media and folders that are automatically cleaned, indexed for cloud backup, or shared with unrelated Minecraft installations.

Keep client and server releases aligned
Use the Enigmatica 8 Minecraft 1.18.2 release that corresponds to the server pack. Modded clients and servers must agree on the pack’s mod set and versions; mixing a different Enigmatica release with server 2.5.1 can produce missing-mod or registry errors before a player reaches the world.
Start and stop cleanly
Use the supplied start script every time so that the pack’s intended Java and Forge launch arguments are retained. To stop the server, use the console’s normal shutdown command or the method documented by the pack instead of killing the process. A clean stop lets the world save and reduces the chance of a damaged region after a power interruption.

Running the server on your own computer gives you direct control, but it also makes you responsible for connectivity, maintenance and recovery. A managed host removes much of that systems work in exchange for a recurring fee and less control over the underlying machine. Compare the options before inviting players.

Enigmatica’s server guide recommends BisectHosting as an easier managed option and states that at least 4 GB is suggested for 5–7 players. The same guide advertises 25% off a new client’s first month with the code ENIGMATICA. Treat that as a promotional offer: verify the current price, billing term, region availability, eligibility and discount conditions at checkout because promotions can change.
Even on a managed host, choose a plan that meets the pack’s current memory guidance. A plan described as 4 GB may satisfy the separate 5–7-player suggestion but is below the pack table’s 5 GB minimum. A 6 GB plan is the more appropriate baseline when the provider offers it, with 8 GB reserved for the documented HD-resource-pack or shader scenario.
Automate updates with the official workflow
For administrators who want repeatable updates, Enigmatica documents an automated workflow for Enigmatica 8. It uses the project’s repository and supplied scripts rather than replacing the pack with an unrelated updater.

Read the warning before adopting this workflow. Tracked-file changes are reset during the update process. The documented workflow backs up the world and mods folders, but that does not mean every custom edit is preserved. Store your own copy of important configuration changes and test the update on a disposable instance before applying it to a world your group depends on.

Maintenance checklist
- Record the exact Enigmatica server release and Minecraft version before changing anything.
- Keep Java on the required 64-bit major version and verify it after operating-system updates.
- Stop the server cleanly before copying world files or editing configuration.
- Maintain an independent backup of the world and any custom configuration, especially before an automated update.
- Watch available memory rather than assigning the entire host to Java.
- When adding HD resource packs or shaders to the environment described by the documentation, plan for the 8 GB allocation.
- For a home server, document who controls the machine, network and backups so another player can recover it if the host computer is unavailable.
