To enable scheduled PvP in V Rising, stop the dedicated server, back up its settings JSON, set GameModeType to PvP, change PlayerDamageMode to TimeRestricted, and define weekday and weekend windows under PlayerInteractionSettings. Castle sieges use separate windows and a separate damage mode, so you can allow player combat without allowing castle damage at the same times.

The exact file name and folder vary between server builds and installation methods. Use the generated settings file in your server rather than blindly creating a new one, keep custom presets disabled, and verify the configured time zone before announcing the schedule to players.

V Rising separates ordinary player combat from attacks that damage castles. A server can therefore use one timetable for vampire-versus-vampire damage and another for castle sieges. The relevant controls are:

Before changing the server
Stop the process first
Do not edit a live settings file. Stop the dedicated server cleanly, then wait until its process has exited. Restarting after the edit is required for the server to load the new values.
Make a restorable backup
Copy the complete settings JSON to a separate location before editing. A malformed JSON document can become unreadable to the game, and a backup is the fastest way back to a known-good configuration. Keep the backup outside any folder that an update or preset-copy operation might replace.

Documentation is inconsistent about the name: some pages call it ServerSettings.json, while the dedicated-server documentation calls it ServerGameSettings.json. Open the file already present in your server’s generated settings directory and check for existing game-setting keys before creating anything new.

Folder advice also differs. Guides point either to VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/ or to a save-data Settings directory. The save-data location is commonly recommended for custom settings because an update may overwrite files in StreamingAssets. Your installation’s generated file is the authority: edit the copy the server loads, and confirm that choice by restarting and checking the result.
Step-by-step: enable scheduled player PvP
- Stop the server and back up the JSON. Preserve the original formatting and all unrelated keys.
- Set the global mode. In the game-settings file, set
GameModeTypetoPvP. APvEvalue disables player combat. If your build exposes a Duo PvP mode, select it only when that team format is what you intend; the exact availability depends on the server version. - Choose restricted player damage. Set
PlayerDamageModetoTimeRestricted. Leaving a continuous mode in place makes the timetable ineffective, while using a non-PvP game mode prevents the schedule from enabling combat. - Edit the weekday and weekend objects. The community structure places
VSPlayerWeekdayTimeandVSPlayerWeekendTimeinsidePlayerInteractionSettings. Each object uses four 24-hour clock fields:StartHour,StartMinute,EndHour, andEndMinute. - Choose the server clock. Set
TimeZoneto one of the values accepted by your build. A hosting guide saysLocalmeans UTC+0, which is counterintuitive; verify the behavior on your installation instead of assuming that “local” means the machine’s geographic time. Daylight-saving behavior is not established in the available documentation, so recheck the schedule when clocks change. - Save valid JSON. Do not add comments, trailing commas, or duplicate keys. Keep the existing nesting and capitalization. A community example uses a weekday window of 16:00–21:30 and a weekend window of 17:00–23:00, but those are illustrative values, not recommended defaults.
- Restart and test. Start the server, connect with a second player if possible, and test during an allowed period and an excluded period. Record the observed server time and compare it with the configured zone before publishing the timetable.
Illustrative structure
Use this only as a map of the names and nesting; copy the exact structure generated by your server. Do not replace a complete file with a fragment.

Set castle raid windows independently
Player combat and castle damage are separate systems. Set CastleDamageMode to TimeRestricted when siege damage should be available only during scheduled periods. Use Always for continuous castle damage or Never to disable castle damage altogether.
Define VSCastleWeekdayTime and VSCastleWeekendTime with the same start-hour, start-minute, end-hour, and end-minute pattern used by the player windows. The available material does not establish a universal nesting location for these two fields, so place them where the generated file for your version shows them. Do not assume that changing player windows also changes castle windows.
A common policy might permit evening player fights but reserve a shorter weekend period for castle sieges. The two schedules can be deliberately different; communicate both to players with the time zone written out, such as “UTC, weekdays 16:00–21:30.”

Prevent a preset from undoing your edits
A GameSettingsPreset value in ServerHostSettings.json can override ServerGameSettings.json when the server boots. If custom PvP or raid windows are required, leave that preset value empty. Otherwise, the server may start successfully while silently restoring preset values.
The installation also includes preset files in StreamingAssets/GameSettingPresets, including examples named StandardPvE.json and StandardPvP.json. A preset can be copied into the save-data settings directory and saved as ServerGameSettings.json, after which you edit the copy. Back up both the original and the customized copy before trying this approach.
Time-zone and calendar checks
Use 24-hour values
Enter hours as numbers from the 24-hour clock: 16:00 is 4 p.m. and 23:00 is 11 p.m. Minutes belong in the minute field rather than being written as a decimal hour. Keep the weekday and weekend definitions separate so a Friday evening and a Saturday evening can follow different policies.
Write the zone beside every published time
A schedule without a zone is ambiguous for an international community. State the configured TimeZone value and, if necessary, provide a conversion for your players. Recheck after an update or host migration because a different accepted value or interpretation can shift the real-world window.
Test the boundary
Test shortly before the start, inside the window, shortly before the end, and after the end. The available documentation does not specify whether an end value is inclusive to the exact minute, so do not infer that behavior from the JSON alone. Use observed in-game behavior and publish a one-minute grace policy only if your own testing supports it.
Troubleshooting common failures
PvP is still disabled
- Confirm
GameModeTypeisPvP, notPvE. - Confirm the server was stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Check that you edited the file the process actually loads; compare timestamps and the generated default file in the active settings directory.
- Inspect
ServerHostSettings.jsonfor a non-emptyGameSettingsPresetthat may be replacing your custom file.
PvP is always available
- Check that
PlayerDamageModeis exactlyTimeRestricted, including capitalization. - Verify both weekday and weekend objects contain the four time fields.
- Confirm the test day is using the window you edited; a weekend test does not exercise the weekday object.
The hours are shifted
- Read the configured
TimeZonevalue and compare it with the clock used by the host. - Do not assume
Localmeans the host’s geographic zone; one guide documents it as UTC+0. - Check for a preset override and test again after clearing it.
The server refuses to load the settings
- Restore the backup immediately if the server reports unreadable settings.
- Validate punctuation and braces, remove comments and trailing commas, and change only one field group at a time.
- Keep a copy of the failing file so you can identify the last change after recovery.
Your change has no effect after several restarts
Some settings cannot be changed after a world has been created, even after a restart. If a valid edit is ignored, check the current version’s server-setting documentation and determine whether that option is creation-time only. Do not delete the world or recreate it until you have confirmed the consequence for your save.
Difficulty settings are in the wrong file
Guides disagree about GameDifficultyPreset: one places it in ServerHostSettings.json, while another says the launcher dropdown sets the preset only when a new world is created. Treat difficulty as a separate configuration question and verify the behavior of your server version before changing it while troubleshooting PvP.
Operational checklist
- Server stopped before editing.
- Original JSON copied to a safe backup location.
- Correct generated settings file and folder identified.

Where to verify field changes
Stunlock’s support site maintains articles titled “Full List of Server Settings” and “How to Revert Changes to JSON Files.” Use those articles, together with the default settings file generated by your installed build, to confirm field names after game updates. Community examples are useful for orientation, but they should not override the file and version actually running your server.
