You can select AUX audio > Line in in the Alexa app on some Echo models, but AUX input is not supported by every Echo—and the available controls may have changed. Amazon’s guidance describes selecting line-in for compatible devices; it does not establish a universal setting that keeps AUX as the default after every restart, interruption, or new playback request.
First check whether your Echo accepts AUX input
A 3.5 mm jack does not necessarily mean an Echo can receive audio. Amazon forum guidance describes Echo Dot jacks as output-only, so a Dot cannot take audio in through that port. Some full-size Echo models have line-in; the Echo 4th generation, for example, is described as having a jack that can switch between line-in and line-out. Check your exact model in Amazon’s Echo device identification guide rather than relying on the product name or the presence of a jack. Echo Input is a separate product: Amazon describes it as a way to add Alexa to an external speaker using a 3.5 mm connection or Bluetooth. That is not the same as feeding audio into an Echo speaker’s input. See Amazon’s Echo Input setup help.
Select line-in in the Alexa app
For a compatible Echo, Amazon staff guidance describes this app path. Menu names can vary by model or software version.

- Open the Alexa app and select the compatible Echo device.
- Open AUX audio, then choose Line in.
- Connect the external audio source to the Echo with a 3.5 mm audio cable, following Amazon’s guidance. Turn on the source and start playback.
- If the sound is quiet, check and raise the external source’s volume.
The steps are based on an Amazon staff response dated October 10, 2024, in the line-in forum discussion. If AUX audio or Line in does not appear, the feature may not be supported or available for that device in its current app interface.
Voice commands changed for some older Echo speakers
Ars Technica reported on October 6, 2026, that Amazon was ending voice commands for AUX input effective October 7, 2026, on the Echo Plus 2nd generation, Echo 3rd generation, Echo Studio 1st generation, and Echo 4th generation. The report says Amazon confirmed the change and reproduces a customer notice stating that requests such as “Alexa, play from line in” and “Alexa, set aux input” would no longer work. The report concerns voice commands. It does not establish whether the Alexa app’s AUX audio > Line in control remains available after the change. Check the selected Echo’s current device controls in the app; do not assume voice switching works or that app-based switching was removed.

The documented app steps let you select line-in on a compatible device. The available guidance does not promise that the Echo will automatically return to AUX after a restart, interruption, or later playback request. If you need AUX to remain selected, verify the behavior on your specific model and app version rather than treating line-in as a universal persistent default.

Do not confuse AUX input with other Alexa audio settings
- Default music service: This chooses the streaming service Alexa uses for a profile. Amazon places it under More > Settings > Preferences > Music & Podcasts > Profile > Your Default Services; it does not select AUX input. See Amazon’s music and podcast settings help.
- Preferred speaker in a Smart Home Group: This chooses speakers for music playback when you address the group, not an AUX input. See Amazon’s Smart Home Group speaker help.
- Echo Auto: This is a separate setup. Amazon’s instructions connect Echo Auto to a car stereo and have you set the car stereo’s source to AUX; they do not switch an Echo smart speaker to line-in. See Echo Auto auxiliary-cable setup.
If line-in is unavailable, choose the right audio direction
Before buying a cable or changing settings, determine whether you want to send audio into the Echo or send Echo audio out to another speaker. A cable only helps with the first goal if the exact Echo model supports line-in. A 3.5 mm jack used only for output cannot accept an external source, and Echo Input’s purpose is to add Alexa to an external speaker rather than turn an Echo speaker into an AUX receiver.
