A low price on a PS4, Xbox One, or original Nintendo Switch edition does not automatically buy the newer version or its add-ons.
Start with the exact platform and generation
Read the product title and packaging for the console name—not just the game or franchise. A listing for a Nintendo Switch game, PS4 game, Xbox One game, or a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition can represent different products, even when the artwork and game name look similar. Confirm that the edition works with the console you own before comparing prices.

Then identify the format: physical game card or disc, digital purchase, or a code. A physical listing will not help if your console cannot use that medium. For example, Xbox Series S is all-digital and does not play game discs; Xbox lists its console details on the Xbox Series S page.

Check what the edition actually includes
Edition names are not a reliable substitute for an itemized contents list. Look for whether the offer includes the base game, an expansion or other DLC, bonus items, or an upgrade pack. If the listing does not clearly identify the contents, check the publisher’s page for that exact game and edition before buying.

- Base game: the playable game, without assuming that separately sold add-ons are included.
- Bundle or deluxe edition: check which named add-ons or bonuses are included; names alone do not establish their contents.
- Upgrade edition or pack: confirm whether it includes the original game, only an upgrade, or requires you to own another version.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: distinguish the game from its upgrade
What “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” means
Nintendo describes a Switch 2 Edition as the original Nintendo Switch game bundled with an upgrade pack. The enhancements vary by game, and Switch 2 Edition features can only be played on Nintendo Switch 2. If you already own the original Switch game, you may be able to buy the upgrade pack separately instead of purchasing the bundle; eligibility and contents depend on the specific title. Check regional compatibility
Nintendo says Switch game cards are generally not region-locked, except for consoles and cards distributed in the Chinese region. However, Nintendo has not tested all overseas software and does not guarantee full service and support for it. The company recommends software made for the console’s region; check supported-region information on the packaging or in the game’s Support Information. PS4 and PS5: verify the upgrade offer for that game
A PS4 label does not promise a free or automatic PS5 upgrade. Sony says the PS5 is backward compatible with the majority of PS4 games, but an upgrade to a PS5 version is available only for eligible titles and under the offer’s terms. Sony’s Games Support page explains how to find an eligible offer and switch between PS4 and PS5 versions in your game library.

- Digital PS4 game: if eligible, the upgrade offer can be accessed from the game hub on PS5. Check the displayed price and terms for that title.
Before treating a discounted PS4 copy as a bargain, confirm that its specific upgrade exists, what it costs, and whether you can meet any disc requirement.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S: check Smart Delivery and disc rules
Smart Delivery is title-dependent. For supported games, Xbox says one digital purchase delivers the best version for the Xbox console being used. Supported physical discs can also participate when the developer or publisher implements the feature. Check whether the particular game supports Smart Delivery; do not infer it from the Xbox brand or from another game’s listing. Xbox explains the feature in its Smart Delivery overview.
For a backward-compatible Xbox One disc game played on Xbox Series X, keep the disc in the drive after installation to play. Series S does not support discs, so a disc listing is not compatible with that console.

Xbox has also described a separate, changing feature for supported discs. In an Xbox Wire announcement dated August 26, 2026, Xbox VP Next Generation Jason Ronald said, “Our goal is to make it easier for those libraries to move forward with players.” The announcement said Xbox Insiders could begin testing the feature on August 31 and that most Xbox One and Series X disc games supported it, while some titles would not be available at launch. This is not a universal digital entitlement: check the status and eligibility of the exact game in Xbox Wire’s announcement.
Use this checklist before checkout
- Confirm the exact game title and console generation printed on the product page or box.
- Check whether the offer is a physical copy, digital purchase, or code, and whether your console accepts that format.
- Read the edition’s contents: base game, DLC, expansion, bonus items, and any upgrade pack.
- For a cross-generation upgrade, verify eligibility and cost for that exact title. Check whether a disc must remain inserted to play.
- Check any region or account restrictions against your console and platform account.
- Add the cost of any required upgrade or add-on to the sale price, then compare that total with an edition or bundle that includes the content you want.
Compare the total offer, not the discount label
When two listings are available, compare the same things side by side: console compatibility, game version, format, included content, upgrade eligibility and cost, disc requirements, region or account limits, and total price. If you only want to play the base game, extras may not justify a higher price. If you want the newer version or included DLC, a cheaper older-generation copy may cost more once you add the required upgrade.
Generic phrases such as “next-gen upgrade” are not enough to establish eligibility or price. Upgrade terms and edition contents are specific to the game and publisher and can change, so use the current platform or publisher information for the title you intend to buy.
