You can make a YouTube Short in the YouTube mobile app by recording with the Shorts camera, or upload an existing square or vertical video up to three minutes long. Review and edit the video, choose audio you are allowed to use, set its title, privacy, and audience, then upload it. You can also upload a Short from YouTube Studio on a computer.
Choose how to make your Short

You do not need special equipment for YouTube’s documented creation workflow. A smartphone is the capture device for the Shorts camera; a tripod or other gear is optional, not a requirement. YouTube’s help instructions reflect the labels and workflows reviewed on October 3, 2026; labels can vary with app updates or device.

Record and publish in the YouTube mobile app
- Open the Shorts camera. Sign in to the YouTube app, tap Create, then Short.
- Record your clips. Hold or tap Capture to start, then use it again to stop. You can record multiple segments and adjust the duration in the camera.
- Review and edit. Preview the clips and use the available tools, such as music, filters, and effects. You can undo or redo edits and save a draft.
- Add creative touches. Tap Done to preview the Short and, where available, add sounds, text-to-speech, or other effects.
- Enter the video details. Tap Next, add a title of up to 100 characters, set privacy, and indicate whether the video is made for kids. Choose the visibility you intend: YouTube says the default is private for creators aged 13–17 and public for creators 18 or older, and you can change it.
- Publish or save. Tap Upload Short to publish, or save it as a draft to finish later.
You can also start with a video already saved on your phone. In the mobile upload flow, select the square or vertical video, trim or edit it as needed, then provide its details and upload.

- Open YouTube Studio’s computer upload instructions and select Create → Upload videos.
- Choose a square or vertical video that is up to three minutes long.
- Complete the video details, including its title, privacy, and audience setting, then publish when ready. The default privacy depends on the creator’s age: private for ages 13–17 and public for ages 18 or older; select the setting you want.
YouTube’s mobile Shorts-camera guidance lists a maximum upload resolution of 1080p. Do not assume that a higher-resolution file will be accepted through that mobile workflow.

Use music and other people’s footage carefully
You cannot assume a song found online is cleared for your Short. YouTube says copyrighted material in an upload must be approved for your use. Otherwise, the video can receive a Content ID claim; a valid copyright takedown can remove it and may result in a strike.
You can select eligible music through the Shorts Audio Library. Allowed duration depends on the track and workflow: YouTube says some tracks may be available for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short, while its mobile upload guidance describes library audio limited to 15-second clips. Check the duration shown for the specific audio in the app rather than assuming either limit applies universally. YouTube also says royalty-free music from the YouTube Audio Library will not receive a Content ID claim. See YouTube’s Shorts music eligibility guidance.

Turn an eligible long video into a Short
- Open the watch page for an eligible public video that you uploaded.
- Tap Remix, then Edit into a Short.
- Select an excerpt of up to 60 seconds, add creative touches, and upload. The Short links back to the source video.
This route is not available for private or unlisted videos, or for videos with third-party copyright claims. If Edit into a Short is missing, YouTube says Shorts sampling may need to be enabled in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s instructions for creating Shorts from your videos.

- Confirm the video is square or vertical and no longer than three minutes.
- Watch the preview and make sure the beginning communicates what the Short is about.
- Verify that you have permission to use every song, clip, or other copyrighted material.
- Check the title, privacy setting, and made-for-kids selection before uploading.
- If repurposing a video, confirm that it is public, eligible, and yours to edit into a Short.
Understand Shorts views in Analytics
Since March 31, 2025, YouTube counts a Shorts view when a Short starts or replays, with no minimum watch-time requirement. YouTube retained the previous metric as Engaged views; its help page says Engaged Shorts views continue to be used for YouTube Partner Program eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing. Views and Engaged views are different metrics, so do not treat their totals as interchangeable. Details are in YouTube’s Shorts help page.
