Choose music only when its rights explicitly cover your platform and every way you plan to use the stream: live, replay, clips, monetized uploads, and relevant territories. A song being free, included with a game, or available through a music subscription does not by itself permit rebroadcasting it.
Start with the stream’s destination and afterlife
Before choosing a track, list where the stream will appear and what may happen to it afterward. Permission for a live broadcast does not automatically cover an archived VOD, a clip, a repost, or a second platform. A license may also have territory, monetization, attribution, or channel-allowlisting conditions.

- Platforms: Twitch, YouTube Live, or both.
- Formats: live broadcast, archive/VOD, clips, and any later repost.
- Commercial use: whether the stream or its recordings will be monetized.
- Territories: where viewers may watch and where the license applies.
Check the actual terms for the track and plan, not just a service’s “royalty-free,” “copyright-safe,” or “free” label. Save a copy of the license and proof of permission alongside the track details. If a track’s permission can be revoked or its terms can change, account for that before relying on it for recurring streams.

Music you composed and control
Original music can be a straightforward choice when you control the necessary rights. Make sure you have rights to both the composition and the specific recording you use; they may have different rights holders. If anyone else contributed, confirm the permission covers the intended platforms, recordings, and monetized uses.

Public-domain works
A work being in the public domain does not necessarily make every recording of it free to use. Check the status of both the composition and the particular recording in the territories relevant to your audience and use.
Platform or third-party music libraries
Use a library only when its current track- and plan-specific terms expressly cover your use. Verify platforms, live versus recorded use, clips, territories, monetization, attribution, and how Content ID claims or channel allowlisting are handled. A library’s inclusion in an old platform announcement is not proof that its current terms cover your stream.
YouTube describes its Audio Library as its official option for copyright-safe music and sound effects in YouTube videos. YouTube also warns that music marked “free” can still receive Content ID flags. For YouTube Live, read the live-stream rules as well as the library or track terms.
Commercial music and subscription services
Buying a download, owning a CD, or paying for a music subscription does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast a recording. Twitch’s DJ Program FAQ search-result excerpt says a subscription or purchase typically does not authorize sharing music on Twitch; because that page’s current details were not verified here, check the current FAQ and the terms for your account, territory, and intended use before relying on it.

YouTube Live
YouTube says music is safe for its platform when it is public domain or you have permission from the copyright owner. A written credit or “free” label does not prevent a Content ID match. YouTube also cautions that a track cleared for a Short may not be cleared for a longer video.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If matching content remains after a warning, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A licensed channel can still encounter a restriction if the rights holder has not added it to the Content ID allowlist. Contact the rights holder about allowlisting when the license supports your use but the live stream is being restricted. Archived live streams may receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends.
Do not treat Creator Music as a live-stream music solution. YouTube’s published usage details limit its tracks to eligible long-form videos, not livestreams or Shorts, and licenses can include territory and single-video restrictions. Check the terms for any later replay or repurposed upload separately.
Twitch
Twitch’s Community Guidelines prohibit sharing music you do not own or have rights to share, including music playing in the background. Twitch’s November 2020 guidance advised streamers not to play recorded music without all necessary rights or permission. It named Soundtrack by Twitch, Soundstripe, Monstercat Gold, Chillhop, Epidemic Sound, and NCS as examples at that time; those dated examples are not guarantees of current availability, endorsement, or coverage. Confirm current terms directly with the provider and Twitch.

Twitch’s 2020 guidance also advises checking a game’s EULA for in-game music. Its DJ Program FAQ excerpt cautions that some rights arrangements may not cover streaming globally, so do not assume permission in one territory applies everywhere.
Streaming to more than one platform
Verify each destination separately. Permission for YouTube does not establish permission for Twitch, or vice versa. The same applies to a platform’s replay, clip, and monetization rules.
Use this track-by-track checklist
- Pick the role of the music. Decide whether it should set a mood, fill quiet moments, provide transitions, or be the focus of the broadcast. Keep it low enough that speech and game audio remain clear.
- Write down every intended use. Include live playback, VODs, clips, monetized uploads, reposts, platforms, and territories.
- Read the actual license. Confirm the track and plan cover every use, plus any attribution or monetization conditions.
- Check recording rights. Confirm permission applies to the exact recording as well as the composition where relevant.
- Check platform mechanisms. For YouTube, find out whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel. For Twitch, verify the current Music Guidelines and service terms.
- Keep evidence. Store the license, receipt or permission, track title, and any allowlisting confirmation where you can find them if a claim occurs.
- Test your audio routing. Check levels and what is captured in the broadcast and recording before going live. Muting music in a VOD may reduce exposure in that archive, but it does not grant permission to play the music live.
Handle in-game music cautiously
Do not assume that music included in a game is automatically cleared for streaming. Check the current game EULA or official streaming policy. If the permission is unclear and the game offers the option, disable its soundtrack or mute the music before broadcasting.

Match the music to the stream
Once permissions are clear, choose tracks that support the content rather than compete with it. Consider the stream’s mood, whether the music will sit under speech or gameplay, and whether the same track needs to work in a replay or clip. Test the mix in a recording or private setup first so that voices and important game audio remain intelligible.

Common problems and what to do
YouTube warns, interrupts, or ends the live stream
A third-party match may be detected. Follow YouTube’s warning, remove or stop the matched content, and do not assume a license prevents automated restrictions. If your license covers the use, contact the rights holder about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
A claim appears on the archived stream
YouTube may make Content ID claims after a live stream ends. Review the claim and the license for the archived use specifically; live permission alone may not cover the replay. Follow the platform’s claim process and provide documentation only when it supports the use in question.
A track is described as free or royalty-free, but still gets flagged
Those labels are not proof of platform permission or a guarantee against Content ID matching. Check the actual license, the recording rights, the permitted platforms and formats, and whether the rights holder offers channel allowlisting.

A track works on one platform but not another
Licenses and platform rules differ. Re-check the exact service terms and rights for each platform, territory, and use rather than carrying a clearance assumption across destinations.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your plan is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud service that plays uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your computer, OBS setup, and home connection are not needed to keep the stream running. Music rights still apply: StreamNeo does not grant permission to use a track.
Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start your free first day.
