To make a Windrose server private, enable Is Password Protected in the Windrose Server Settings file, enter a password, save the configuration, and restart the server. After the restart, players must provide that password through the protected server connection flow before they can join.
What makes a Windrose server private?
Windrose privacy is controlled by a server-side password setting. In a managed hosting panel, the setting appears in the server configuration rather than as an in-game administrator command or a router option. Turning on Is Password Protected activates the access check; the value in the adjacent Password field is the credential players need.

The practical result is straightforward: anyone who does not have the password cannot complete the protected connection process.

Exact steps in a hosting control panel
- Open the server Control Panel. Sign in to the panel used to manage the Windrose instance and open the specific server you want to protect.
- Open the Config tab. Configuration files are managed from this tab, not from the in-game console.
- Select Windrose Server Settings. Choose the file with that exact name. Do not edit an unrelated general, startup, or game-settings file.
- Enable Is Password Protected. Turn the setting on. This toggle is what changes the server from unrestricted entry to password-protected entry.
- Enter a value in Password. In the same configuration area, type the password you want players to use. Make a note of the exact characters before saving so you can distribute the correct value.
- Save the configuration. Use the panel’s save or apply control and wait for it to confirm that the file was written.
- Restart the server. The setting is applied after a restart. A save without a restart can leave the running process using its previous, unprotected configuration.
Once the server is running again, give the password only to the people you want to admit. They should enter it exactly as you saved it when the protected server connection flow requests it.
Why the restart is required
The panel edits a server-side configuration file, while the running Windrose process may already have loaded the old values. Saving changes the file; restarting reloads that file into the server process. This is why the complete operation has two separate actions: save first, then restart.
If you close the panel after saving but do not restart, test connections can still behave as though the server were public. Treat the restart as part of the password-protection change, not as an optional final step.

How to choose and share the password
Use a value your group can enter accurately
Players must reproduce the saved value to connect. A short, easily mistyped string creates avoidable support requests, while a long phrase containing several words can be easier for a trusted group to transcribe. Keep a private record of the exact value you entered so you can compare it with what players are typing.

Share it through a private channel
Password protection only limits access if the password itself is controlled. Send it directly to the intended players instead of posting it in a public server description or an open chat. If someone outside the group learns it, change the password and restart the server again.
Rotate it when membership changes
To remove access for people who already know the old value, return to Config, open Windrose Server Settings, replace the value in Password, save, and restart. A new password is the practical way to invalidate the previous one through this setting.
Checking that the server is really private
- Reopen Config and select Windrose Server Settings.
- Verify that Is Password Protected is still enabled.
- Verify that the Password field contains the value you intend to distribute.
- Confirm that the save operation completed.
- Confirm that the server has been restarted after the save.
- Ask a player who has the password to connect through the normal server entry flow and enter the value exactly as saved.
These checks distinguish a configuration problem from a player-entry problem. If the toggle is off, the server is not protected. If the toggle is on but the old value remains in the file, the intended password was not saved. If both values are correct but the process was never restarted, the running server may still be using the old state.
Troubleshooting common problems
The server still appears open
- Open the correct server in the hosting panel; changing another Windrose instance does not affect this one.
- In Windrose Server Settings, confirm that Is Password Protected is enabled rather than merely viewing the password field.
- Save again and wait for the panel to acknowledge the change.
- Restart the server after saving.
The documented privacy procedure does not require a separate invite code or firewall change. Do not add those steps as a substitute for enabling the server setting.

A friend cannot connect after the change
- Have the player retry after the restart has completed.
- Send the password again and ask the player to enter the same characters you saved, without substituting an older password.
- Check the Password field yourself for a typing mistake, then save and restart if you correct it.
- Confirm that Is Password Protected remains enabled in the same configuration file.
If one player can join with the current password and another cannot, the remaining issue is likely in the second player’s entry attempt rather than in the privacy toggle. Have both players use the current value after the latest restart.
The password was changed but the old one still works
Return to the configuration file and verify that the new value was saved, then restart the server. A password edit that has not been loaded by a restart can leave the previous value active in the running process.
The setting cannot be found
Look specifically under the panel’s Config tab and select Windrose Server Settings. The control is named Is Password Protected; it is not described as an in-game command. Panel layouts can differ between providers, so the surrounding navigation may look different even when the underlying setting has the same name.
Managed hosting versus self-hosting
Managed providers expose Windrose configuration through a web control panel, which is useful when you do not want to operate the server process yourself. Shockbyte publishes the direct panel workflow above, and Nitrado documents Windrose password protection as part of its setup guidance. The exact button labels around the file editor can vary by provider, but the two values you need are the protection toggle and password field.

Self-hosters should use the official Windrose dedicated-server documentation for the installation they are running. That documentation is supplied with the free Steam Windrose Dedicated Server app and covers initial setup and hosting. The available material establishes the hosting-panel workflow, but it does not specify a universal file path or command-line syntax for every self-hosted installation. Do not assume that a panel label maps to one identical path on a manually managed server; follow the documentation packaged with your server version.

No firewall, router, or invite-code change is part of the documented Windrose privacy procedure. If you have separate network or administrative requirements, handle them independently and do not treat them as necessary steps for enabling this password setting.
A repeatable workflow for future password changes
- Tell current players that access will change.
- Open the server’s Control Panel and choose Config.
- Open Windrose Server Settings.
- Leave Is Password Protected enabled.
- Replace the value in Password.
- Save the configuration and verify the save succeeded.
- Restart the server.
- Distribute only the new password and ask one intended player to test it.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: changing the value and announcing it before the running server has reloaded the file.
