The direct method: upgrade the Flame Altar
Enshrouded does not use a separate “building range” tool or perk. The construction boundary is tied to the Flame Altar at your base. Upgrading that altar enlarges the three-dimensional volume in which you can place foundations, walls, furniture and other building pieces.

- Stand at the Flame Altar that controls the base you want to expand.
- Interact with it to open the altar interface.
- Choose Upgrade Altar.
- Provide the required Shroud Core or Shroud Nexus shown by the game.
- Return to build mode and test the newly available space along the ground, sides and vertical axis.
The upgrade is made on the individual altar you use. The world’s Flame Level is a separate progression system; community reports describe that level as shared across the world, while build-area upgrades remain specific to each altar.
Reported altar tiers, dimensions and costs
The following figures are reported by the fan-run enshrouded.wiki.gg and community guides. They are game values rather than measurements from a developer specification, and the interface in your current patch is the final authority.

The dimensions are per axis: width, length and height. They are not a two-dimensional circle or an unlimited horizontal radius. A level-2 altar therefore gives an approximately 80-block-wide, 80-block-long and 80-block-high construction volume according to the reported values.
Why some guides stop at 120
A conflicting guide from Deltia’s Gaming describes only three building-space stages—40, 80 and 120—and omits a 160 tier. A Steam discussion lists the same progression as 1 Shroud Core for level 1→2, 5 Shroud Cores for level 2→3 and 5 Shroud Nexus for level 3→4. Because the wiki’s tier data appears newer but the available sources disagree, treat level 4 as a value to confirm in-game, not as an unconditional promise for every version.

Shroud Cores
Guides and players consistently describe bosses as the source of Shroud Cores. The wording differs on individual pages, so it is safest to plan around the fact that bosses drop Shroud Cores rather than assuming a fixed number from every encounter. Keep the cores in your storage until you know which altar you want to enlarge; spending them on one base does not automatically enlarge every other altar.
Shroud Nexus for the reported top tier
The reported level-4 upgrade uses 5 Shroud Nexus instead of Shroud Cores. If your altar menu does not show this requirement, or if your game offers a different material, follow the current in-game recipe. No official Keen Games page confirming the area-cost table was identified, and the available evidence does not establish whether a later patch changed these values.

Planning a base inside one altar
Before upgrading, decide how much of the 40-unit starting cube your design actually needs. A compact workshop, storage room and sleeping area can often fit without immediately spending a core. Large farms, tall towers and broad defensive walls are more likely to hit one of the three boundaries.
Check all three axes
- Horizontal reach: Walk the perimeter in build mode and look for the boundary indicator before laying a long foundation.
- Vertical reach: Towers, bridges and roofs can run into the upper limit even when their footprint is inside the horizontal area.
- Below-ground space: Basements and descending staircases consume the same vertical allowance as structures above the altar.
Build a short test section at the edge before committing resources to a full wall. If a piece refuses to place, move toward the altar and test again. This distinguishes a range problem from terrain collision, an obstructed socket or a missing construction resource.

Choose which altar receives the next upgrade
Because upgrades are per altar, prioritize the altar that anchors your most permanent or resource-intensive construction. A remote outpost with a small shelter may remain at level 1 while your main settlement receives the next core. Record the altar’s location on your map or with a sign so that materials are not accidentally spent on a temporary site.
Extending a settlement with multiple altars
One altar’s reported maximum is still a finite cube. To create a much larger settlement, players place additional Flame Altars and overlap their construction borders. Each altar supplies its own build volume, allowing adjacent sections of a sprawling base to be constructed under different altars.

How to chain overlapping areas
- Place the first altar at the center of the initial build zone.
- Upgrade it only as far as the planned core allows.
- Walk toward the intended extension and identify a location where the second altar’s boundary will overlap the first.
- Place the second altar inside that overlap rather than just beyond the first boundary.
- Test a few building pieces across the intended join before constructing a large connecting wall or floor.
- Repeat the process for additional sections, keeping every new altar connected by an overlap.
Community Steam posts report that a non-overlapping “chain” can fail to link. In practical terms, a visually nearby altar is not necessarily part of one continuous build zone; leave a generous shared section instead of trying to meet two borders exactly.
What multiple altars do and do not share
- Each altar has its own build-area upgrade level.
- The Flame Level is reported as shared across the world, so raising it is not the same as enlarging every altar’s construction cube.
- Materials spent upgrading one altar should not be assumed to upgrade another.
- Overlapping altars expand the usable settlement footprint, but they do not turn the whole map into one unrestricted building area.
One player described a multi-altar base roughly 320 wide, 320 long and 160 high. That is an individual construction example, not a documented game limit or guaranteed maximum. Your practical size will depend on altar placement, terrain and whether the current version preserves the reported dimensions.
Moving an altar to reach a better area
Player discussions and one building guide say an altar can be picked up and placed farther away, which can help when the original position leaves an awkward edge outside the settlement. Use this as a relocation option, not as a way to create free range: the altar still controls a finite volume after it is moved.
Relocation checklist
- Finish or document the altar’s current section before moving it.
- Check that the destination has enough level ground and overlaps any neighboring altar you intend to connect.
- Verify that important workstations and access routes will remain inside a controlled build area.
- After placement, open the altar interface and confirm its displayed upgrade level.
- Test a foundation at the old and new edges before dismantling structures.
Whether an altar’s core-based upgrade is retained after it is extinguished or moved is unresolved in the available player reports. One post claims the upgrade can be lost, but that behavior is not verified. If the upgrade level matters to an expensive base, confirm the result in your own current build before relying on relocation as a routine technique.

Troubleshooting a piece that will not place
The piece is outside the altar volume
Move the preview toward the altar and try a lower or more central position. If placement succeeds only after moving inward, the construction boundary—not the blueprint—is the likely cause. Upgrade the controlling altar or add an overlapping altar near that edge.

Check for an actual overlap rather than judging by visual distance. Place a temporary floor or wall in the shared region. If the two zones never provide a common buildable section, reposition the newer altar so its cube intersects the existing one.
The top of a tower is blocked
Remember that the limit is three-dimensional. A horizontal upgrade does not create an unlimited skyward extension; the reported tier values increase all three axes together. Lower the design, move the altar, or use another overlapping altar to control the upper section.
The menu shows different costs or dimensions
Use the values displayed by your game. The published figures come from a fan wiki, guides and Steam discussions, while the available sources do not confirm a 2026 patch adjustment. Record the version and the altar tier if you are comparing notes with other players, because a change in patch or game state can explain a discrepancy.
A resource-efficient upgrade plan
- Build a compact core first. Use the starting 40 × 40 × 40 area to establish storage, crafting and access.
- Map the planned footprint. Mark where the main hall, workshops, farms and towers will sit before spending a Shroud Core.
- Upgrade the primary altar to level 2. The reported requirement is 1 Shroud Core, and the area increases to 80 × 80 × 80.
- Spend the next five cores when the 80-unit cube is genuinely restrictive. Level 3 is reported as 120 × 120 × 120 for 5 additional Shroud Cores.
- Use a second altar for a separate wing. Overlap it with the first rather than automatically paying for every tier on the original altar.
- Reserve Shroud Nexus for the altar that benefits most from level 4. The fan-wiki figure is 5 Shroud Nexus for 160 × 160 × 160, but confirm that recipe in the current interface.
This approach separates “I need a wider main hall” from “I need another connected building zone.” The cheaper solution can be an overlapping altar, while a single upgraded cube is simpler for a dense vertical build.
What is confirmed and what remains uncertain
The core mechanic is consistent across the available guides and player discussions: the Flame Altar controls building space, and upgrading it requires Shroud-related materials. The exact tier table is less certain. The 40, 80 and 120 dimensions and the first two costs are repeatedly reported; the 160 tier and 5-Shroud-Nexus price appear in newer wiki data and a Steam post but are omitted by at least one guide.
No official Keen Games patch note or developer page confirming these area costs was identified. A separate guide discusses newer Flame Level 9 content, but that does not establish a change to altar dimensions. Check the altar’s own upgrade screen after every major update before treating an older table as definitive.
