How to Fix AWStats Permission Problems on a Linux Server

AWStats failures usually come from a mismatch between the account running it and the permissions on Apache logs or AWStats data files. This guide shows how to identify the failing path, apply least-privilege group or ACL fixes, repair CGI and database access, and verify the result after log rotation.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AWStats permission errors have one of three causes: the account running AWStats cannot read the configured access log, cannot traverse part of the path, or cannot write its working and database files. Identify the failing pathname and the execution identity first. Then grant that account the narrowest required access, make the rule survive log rotation, and retest through the same cron or CGI path that originally failed.

What an AWStats permission error is telling you

The wording of the error usually identifies the operation that failed. An error naming an Apache access log is a read problem. An error naming a file ending in .tmp.9999 is normally a write problem in AWStats’s working directory. An error involving history or database files means the updater can open the directory but cannot create, modify, or replace the stored data. A browser error can also be caused by CGI configuration even after all filesystem permissions are correct.

Read failures on the access log

AWStats must open the file named by its LogFile setting. On a typical Debian installation, Apache logs are owned by root:adm, while the package’s AWStats jobs run as www-data. If www-data is not allowed to read the file, AWStats reports an access or permission-denied error before it can parse a single line.

Write failures in DirData or the working directory

The AWStats FAQ describes the temporary-file message precisely: “This error means that the web server didn’t succeed in writing the working temporary file (file ended by .tmp.9999 where 9999 is a number) because of permissions problems.” The directory configured as DirData, or the working directory selected by the installation, must permit the AWStats runtime account to create temporary files, rename them, and remove them.

Database and history-file failures

AWStats stores cumulative history and database files. Every process that updates those files needs the appropriate access. A scheduled command may run as one account while browser-based updates run as the web-server account, so a file created by one identity can later block the other.

CGI errors are a separate layer

When a browser displays Perl source, returns an internal CGI error, or produces a blank report, check Apache’s CGI execution, the Perl interpreter path, and the script’s execute permission separately from log readability. A readable log does not make an unconfigured CGI endpoint executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Map the failing operation, account, and path

Do not begin with a broad chmod. First establish exactly who is running AWStats and which path it is trying to use. A manual shell test may run as your login user, a cron job may run as a package account, and Apache CGI normally runs as its web-server account.

Identify the execution mode

  • Scheduled or offline update: inspect the cron entry, systemd timer, package job, or wrapper script that invokes AWStats. Record the user shown by that job.
  • Manual update: note the account shown by id; a successful manual run as root does not prove that the scheduled account can work.
  • CGI report or browser update: use the Apache worker account shown in the site configuration and process list. Debian’s usual account is www-data, but verify the account on your server.

Run id in the relevant shell, and use a process listing while a job is active if the identity is unclear. Test with the same account later; testing only as root hides the problem.

Read the configured paths

Linux installations commonly keep AWStats configuration under /etc/awstats. Open the configuration for the affected site and record the absolute values of LogFile, DirData, LogFormat, and any setting that allows updates from a browser. An absolute log path avoids ambiguity when cron and CGI start with different working directories.

For an Apache or NCSA combined log, the usual AWStats setting is LogFormat=1. Debian’s model configuration uses /var/log/apache2/access.log as an example. Confirm that the named file is the one Apache actually writes for that virtual host, rather than a similarly named rotated file or a log belonging to another site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect every directory component

A file can have a readable mode and still be inaccessible when one parent directory denies traversal. Inspect the complete path with:

namei -l /var/log/apache2/access.log

Then inspect the file itself:

stat -c '%A %U:%G %n' /var/log/apache2/access.log

Repeat those checks for the configured DirData directory and for a representative history file. The account needs read permission on the log, execute permission on every directory leading to it, and write plus execute permission on the directory in which AWStats creates or replaces files.

Fix access to Apache logs without making them world-readable

Choose a group or ACL that gives the AWStats runtime account read access while leaving unrelated users out. Debian documents the common ownership mismatch as www-data running AWStats while Apache logs are root:adm. Evaluate whether membership in an existing administrative group is appropriate before changing it; that group may expose more logs than AWStats needs.

Use a dedicated read group

A dedicated group limits the grant to the logs AWStats must process. Create or select a group for log readers, add only the scheduled and web identities that need it, and make the current Apache log files group-readable. A representative sequence is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo groupadd --system awstats-logread
sudo usermod -aG awstats-logread www-data
sudo chgrp awstats-logread /var/log/apache2/access.log
sudo chmod 0640 /var/log/apache2/access.log

Apply the group to every relevant virtual-host log, not only the file named in the first error. The account must start a new session, or the service must be restarted where appropriate, before a newly assigned supplementary group is visible. Confirm with id www-data.

Do not change a log to mode 0666 or make it world-readable simply because that is quick. Access logs can contain URLs, query strings, referrers, user agents, and identifying information. A narrow group is usually safer.

Grant a per-user ACL when a group change is unsuitable

An ACL can give only the AWStats account read access while preserving the existing owner and group:

sudo setfacl -m u:www-data:r /var/log/apache2/access.log
getfacl /var/log/apache2/access.log

Apply the ACL to each active log that AWStats reads. Check the parent directories as well; an ACL on the file cannot overcome a missing execute permission on /var, /var/log, or /var/log/apache2. If the scheduler uses another account, grant that account explicitly rather than assuming it inherits the web account’s access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the permission survive rotation

A manual chgrp, chmod, or ACL fixes the current inode only. Logrotate normally creates a new file after rotation, and the new file can revert to root:adm with a mode that blocks AWStats. Debian’s package guidance specifically calls for changing the logrotate create policy as well as existing /var/log/apache2/*.log files.

In the Apache logrotate policy, set the owner, group, and mode to the least-broad values that match your design. For example, a policy using a dedicated group might contain an illustrative directive such as:

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Keep the existing rotation, compression, retention, and reload directives unchanged unless you have a separate reason to alter them. If you use ACLs instead of a group, add an appropriate post-rotation action or another supported mechanism that reapplies the ACL to newly created files. After editing the policy, inspect its syntax using the logrotate validation method used on your distribution, rotate or simulate the affected log during a maintenance window, and check the new file with stat and namei.

Make the AWStats working directory writable

When the error names a temporary file such as /workingpath/awstatsmmyyyy.tmp.9999, focus on the directory containing that file rather than changing the access-log mode. AWStats needs to create a temporary file, write its contents, and usually rename it into place. The account must therefore have write and execute permission on the directory, plus traverse permission on every parent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a private directory for a single updater

If only the web-server account updates AWStats, create a directory owned by that account with no access for unrelated users. For example:

sudo install -d -o www-data -g www-data -m 0750 /var/lib/awstats

Set DirData to that absolute directory in the site’s AWStats configuration. If the directory already contains files owned by another account, inspect them before changing ownership. Stale root-owned temporary or database files can continue to block updates even after the directory mode is corrected.

Use a shared group for cron and CGI

When both an offline updater and CGI must write the same data, create a dedicated data group and make the directory setgid so new entries inherit that group:

sudo groupadd --system awstats-data
sudo usermod -aG awstats-data www-data
sudo chown -R updater-account:awstats-data /var/lib/awstats
sudo chmod 2770 /var/lib/awstats

Replace updater-account with the actual scheduled account. Confirm that both identities are members of awstats-data. The setgid bit controls group inheritance; it does not automatically grant group write permission to every file, so check the modes of existing and newly created database files and adjust the creation policy if needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check parent traversal and symlinks

Use namei -l on the complete DirData path. Every parent directory needs execute permission for the updater’s user or group. If the configured directory is a symbolic link, inspect the link target and its parents while troubleshooting. A simple, direct path reduces the chance of fixing one directory while AWStats writes somewhere else.

Repair database and history-file ownership

AWStats updates history files in place or replaces them during a run. A directory that is writable but contains files owned by a different account can still produce an access error. List the directory with ownership and modes, then identify which account created the failing file.

find /var/lib/awstats -maxdepth 1 -type f -printf '%M %u:%g %pn'

Choose one of two consistent models:

  • One writer: run all updates as the same account and make the data directory and files private to that account.
  • Shared writers: use a dedicated group or ACL for both the scheduled and CGI identities, ensure group write access where AWStats replaces files, and test both paths.

The configuration reference includes SaveDatabaseFilesWithPermissionsForEveryone=1, which can make database files readable and writable for everyone and avoid identity mismatches. That setting is a broad security trade-off, not the least-privilege default. Prefer a dedicated group or ACL when you control both writer identities. If you use the broad setting temporarily to recover a service, replace it with a narrower policy after confirming which accounts actually need access.

Do not solve a single ownership mismatch by making the entire data tree world-writable. Writable history files increase the impact of a compromised web process and can allow unauthorized changes to reports.

Separate CGI execution problems from filesystem permissions

AWStats supports both command-line and CGI execution. A command-line update can succeed while a browser request fails because Apache is not configured to execute the script, the interpreter path in the shebang is invalid, or the script lacks execute permission.

When the browser prints Perl source

Apache is serving the script as a download or plain text instead of handing it to a Perl CGI handler. Enable the CGI mechanism appropriate to your Apache installation, map the AWStats endpoint to that handler, and verify that the script’s interpreter path exists. Do not grant extra filesystem write access until CGI execution itself is working.

When Apache returns an internal error

Read the Apache error log at the exact time of the request. It commonly reveals an invalid interpreter, a missing module or handler, a denied directory, or a script that cannot execute. Check the script’s owner and mode, and verify that every parent directory is traversable by the Apache account. These checks are distinct from whether that account can read /var/log/apache2/access.log.

Protect the CGI endpoint

An AWStats CGI endpoint can expose traffic details and, if browser updates are enabled, may need to write history files. Put it behind authentication or network access controls and restrict who can reach update functionality. The AWStats security guidance recommends limiting access rather than leaving the endpoint open to the public internet. A permission fix that exposes an unauthenticated updater creates a larger problem than the original error.

Verify the repair through the same path that failed

Verification must exercise the real identity, configuration, and destination. A root shell or a different configuration can produce a false success.

  1. Test log readability as the runtime account. Run a read test against the exact configured log, for example sudo -u www-data -- head -n 1 /var/log/apache2/access.log. If this fails, inspect every path component again.
  2. Test directory creation and cleanup. As the same account, create a temporary file in the configured DirData directory and remove it immediately. This checks write and execute permission without altering an AWStats database.
  3. Run the normal AWStats update command. Invoke the same command and configuration used by the cron job, under that job’s account. Do not substitute a root invocation.
  4. Check resulting ownership and timestamps. Confirm that the expected history or database file receives a new timestamp and is owned by an identity that the next updater can use.
  5. Request the report through the protected CGI URL. If web reporting is enabled, make a request through the same Apache virtual host and authentication path used by readers. Check Apache’s error log at the same time.
  6. Test rotation. Rotate or simulate rotation for the relevant Apache log, then repeat the read test and AWStats update. A fix is durable only if the newly created log has the intended owner, group, mode, or ACL.

After the test, confirm that no new permission errors appear in the scheduler output, Apache error log, or AWStats output. Leave the temporary test file removed.

Diagnose the common failure patterns

It works manually but fails from cron

The manual command probably ran under your login account or root. Compare id, the configuration file, environment, and working directory for both invocations. Test the command with sudo -u as the scheduled account, and use absolute paths in the AWStats configuration and job.

It worked until the next log rotation

The current log inode had the corrected mode or ACL, but logrotate created a replacement with its original policy. Fix the Apache logrotate create directive or its ACL hook, then verify a newly rotated file rather than reapplying a manual chmod after every rotation.

The log is readable but the .tmp.9999 error remains

Inspect DirData, not the access log. Check write and execute permissions on the directory and all parents, stale files owned by another account, and whether the configured path is a symlink. Pointing DirData to a directory writable by the actual web-server account is the remedy identified by the AWStats FAQ.

The command-line update works but the browser report fails

Compare the command-line account with the Apache account. Then check CGI handler configuration, the Perl interpreter, script execute permission, and Apache’s error log. If the browser is allowed to update statistics, make sure its account can also write the history files.

Both accounts can read the log, but updates overwrite each other

Use a shared data group or ACL and inspect the modes of newly created history files. A directory-level group grant is insufficient if files are created without group write permission. Alternatively, designate one updater and keep CGI read-only where your reporting design permits it.

Unix modes look correct but access is still denied

Check for a mandatory access-control policy such as SELinux or AppArmor, filesystem mount restrictions, and denials in the system’s security logs. These controls can reject an operation even when owner, group, mode, and ACL output appears correct. Resolve that policy separately; do not compensate by making files world-writable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the least-broad permission design

Approach Best fit Security exposure Persistence requirement
Dedicated log-reading group Several controlled AWStats identities need read access to Apache logs Members can read every log assigned to the group Set the group and mode in logrotate as well as on existing files
Per-user ACL One service account needs access without changing the existing group Access is narrow, but ACLs must be maintained for new files Apply or inherit the ACL through the rotation process
Single-owner data directory Only one account updates AWStats databases Smallest writer scope Keep ownership consistent for all generated files
Shared AWStats data group Offline and CGI processes both update the same history files Every group member can modify the assigned data Use setgid directory permissions and verify file modes after updates
World-readable or world-writable files Emergency compatibility testing only Broad exposure of traffic data or report integrity Replace with a group or ACL policy after diagnosis

Prevent the problem from returning

  • Keep LogFile and DirData as absolute paths and document which virtual host each configuration serves.
  • Record the account used by every cron, systemd, manual, and CGI update path.
  • Keep Apache log ownership, group, mode, and ACL settings in the logrotate policy, not only in one-time shell commands.
  • Give AWStats read access only to the logs it needs and write access only to its data directory.
  • Check parent-directory traversal with namei -l whenever a path changes.
  • Keep database writers aligned through a dedicated group or a single updater; inspect ownership after upgrades and migrations.
  • Protect the CGI endpoint with authentication or network restrictions, especially when browser updates are enabled.
  • After any permission change, run an update as the real service account, request the report through the real CGI path, and test once more after log rotation.

The durable fix is the one that matches the failed operation: read permission on the exact log, traversal on every parent, write permission on the AWStats working and database directories, and a persistent policy for whichever account will run next.
