To show an image when someone shares your website in Telegram, add Open Graph metadata to the page’s HTML <head>, including an absolute, publicly accessible image URL in og:image. Then share the exact page URL in Telegram and check the preview. The documented setup is not India-specific; verify the result in the Telegram client and network conditions you actually use.
Set up Open Graph tags on the page
Add these tags to the HTML <head> of the page you want people to share. Replace the example values with the page’s actual title, canonical URL, image URL, and description.

Choose a usable image URL
Use an absolute URL that points directly to the intended image and is publicly accessible. Prefer an image that represents the specific page over a generic site logo when a suitable page image exists. Open Graph also defines optional image metadata such as MIME type, width, height, secure URL, and alt text. Add accurate values when useful, but the specification does not make every optional image property mandatory. The reviewed official sources do not establish a universal Telegram image-size limit, so do not treat commonly repeated dimensions as Telegram requirements.
Check the page and image before sharing
- Inspect the HTML returned for the exact page URL. Confirm the Open Graph tags, especially
og:image, are present in the document head. - Open the
og:imageURL independently. Confirm it loads the intended image without requiring a login or other private access. - Check that the title, image, and description accurately represent the page. Telegram’s checklist recommends a short description when one is available. Telegram Instant View checklist
- Share the exact page URL in Telegram and inspect the resulting preview in the client your audience uses.
Telegram’s documentation describes webpage previews as potentially carrying a title, description, site name, URL, and media. Clients and bots also offer controls that can disable a preview or affect its media size and placement; those presentation settings do not supply missing webpage metadata. Why a Telegram preview may still omit the image
- The tags are missing from the live HTML: Check the response for the shared page URL, not only what appears in your site editor or browser after scripts run.
- The image cannot be fetched: Recheck the image URL directly and confirm it returns the intended image publicly.
- The preview is disabled or presented differently: Check the sender-side client or bot options and inspect the actual message presentation.
- Metadata or image was recently changed: Recheck the live page and image response first. Telegram’s issue forum includes reports of preview-generation problems even where users observed valid metadata or successful resource fetches. These reports show that metadata checks may not explain every failure; they do not establish a universal cause, cache duration, or guaranteed refresh command. Telegram bug reports
No official source reviewed establishes a dependable cache-reset command. Avoid assuming that a particular refresh trick will force every Telegram client to regenerate a preview.
What changes for websites in India?
The reviewed Telegram and Open Graph documentation describes general web-preview setup, not a separate India-specific metadata format or workflow. Use the same page metadata and publicly accessible image URL, then verify the result using the Telegram client and network conditions relevant to your audience. That does not guarantee identical behavior across every client or network.
