To make TikTok private, open Profile, tap Menu ☰, choose Settings and privacy > Privacy, and switch on Private account. Then use the separate Direct messages and Comments menus to decide who can contact you or reply to your posts. These controls work together, but they are not the same: a private account limits access to posts and followers, while message and comment settings govern contact and interaction independently.
What a private TikTok account changes—and what it does not
A private account requires you to approve people before they can follow you and view posts restricted to followers. It also limits access to certain profile information and reduces the audience that can interact with your content. TikTok’s official explanation is in Choosing between a private or public account.

Your profile can still be found
Private does not mean invisible. TikTok says your name, username and profile photo remain visible to anyone on or off TikTok, and people can still search for your account. That means a private setting protects the audience for posts and follower access; it does not make your identity or account undiscoverable.
Public posts can have a wider reach
On a public account, content may be visible to and shared by people on or off TikTok, depending on the settings attached to the account and each post. Switching to private narrows access, but individual posts can still have their own audience settings. Check a post’s audience instead of assuming the account-wide setting answers every visibility question.

Approved followers are not automatically removed
Turning on private mode changes who can follow and view restricted content going forward. It does not state that existing approved followers disappear, nor does it promise that every copy, link or previous interaction is erased. Review your follower list separately if there are people who should no longer have access.
Private versus public: the practical difference
| Question | Private account | Public account |
|---|---|---|
| Who can follow? | You approve followers. | People can follow without the same approval step. |
| Who can view posts governed by account privacy? | Approved followers. | A wider audience, potentially including people on or off TikTok. |
| Can people find the profile? | Yes. Name, username, profile photo and search visibility remain. | Yes, with the same profile details visible. |
| Who can comment? | The available audience includes Followers and, where offered, Friends. | Everyone may be available, along with Friends where offered. |
| Are messages controlled separately? | Yes. Direct-message rules and private-account relationships still apply. | Yes. Sender categories and request settings still apply. |
This comparison explains why switching to private is only one part of a privacy setup. It controls follower approval and access to posts, but it does not automatically turn off messages, remove existing followers, hide your profile from search or disable comments.
Make the account private in the TikTok app
- Open TikTok and tap Profile.
- Tap Menu ☰ at the top of the profile.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Open Privacy.
- Turn on Private account.
After the switch is on, new followers require your approval. People who are not approved cannot use the account as though it were public to view posts limited by the private-account rules. TikTok still displays your name, username and profile photo publicly, and the account remains searchable.
What to do immediately after switching
Do not stop at the toggle. Open the follower list and look for accounts that should no longer have access. Removing an unwanted approved follower is a separate action; private mode alone does not describe a universal removal of people who already follow you. Next, review any post that contains information you would not want an approved follower to see. Account privacy narrows the audience, but it does not erase copies, links or earlier interactions.
Check the audience of individual posts
Account privacy and post privacy are separate decisions. Before publishing, inspect the post’s audience selector and choose the narrowest audience that fits the post. If a post is already live, open its sharing or privacy controls and review the audience there. Private mode is not a substitute for checking a post-level setting.
Control who can send direct messages
Direct-message permissions have their own menu. For an adult account, go to Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Privacy > Direct messages. TikTok’s current categories and request behavior are described in Manage direct messages.
Choose a setting for each sender category
TikTok presents separate controls for Potential connections and Others on TikTok. For each category, select one of the available choices:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Sender category | What you can select | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Potential connections | Requests or Don’t receive | Requests places an incoming message in the request area for you to decide what to do. Don’t receive blocks that category from initiating a request. |
| Others on TikTok | Requests or Don’t receive | Requests allows a request that you can manage; Don’t receive prevents requests from that category. |
People you follow can send messages under TikTok’s messaging rules. On a private account, however, an account you follow cannot message you until it follows you back. Someone outside that relationship must send a request first when requests are enabled.
Understand the relationship rule on a private account
Following someone is not automatically the same as opening a message channel. If your account is private and you follow another account, that account cannot message you until it follows you back. This is an easy detail to miss when testing settings: you may follow a person and still not be able to receive a normal message from that person until the relationship is mutual. For accounts outside that relationship, the relevant category must permit requests before a request can arrive.
Handle a message request
A request is not the same as an accepted conversation. You can accept, delete or report a request. Accept only when you want the person to move into a normal conversation. Delete an unwanted request without replying; report it when it violates TikTok’s rules or appears abusive, threatening or deceptive.

Leaving a category on Requests gives you a screening step rather than forcing you to accept every sender. Setting it to Don’t receive is the more restrictive choice for that category. Make the decision separately for Potential connections and Others on TikTok; changing one does not necessarily change the other.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy the Direct messages menu may not match another account
TikTok changes the available choices according to age, account type and safety settings. A private account can impose an additional limit even when the same sender category appears on an adult public account. If a control is missing, do not assume the app is malfunctioning; first check the account’s age category and whether a parent or guardian manages it through Family Pairing.
Age-based direct-message restrictions
TikTok does not give every account the same messaging controls. The age rules are summarized in Privacy and safety settings for users under age 18.
Ages 13–15
Direct messaging is unavailable for users aged 13 to 15. No adult-account setting can enable it for this age group, so the Direct messages options may not appear or may be unavailable. If a young teen cannot find a messaging control, that is an age rule rather than evidence that the private-account switch is incorrectly configured.
Ages 16–17
Teen accounts have age- and account-type-specific rules. TikTok says a private teen account cannot receive message requests from other accounts unless those accounts follow the teen. The exact choices can also differ according to the sender category and whether the teen account is public or private. Use the labels shown in the teen account rather than assuming the adult workflow applies.

For a 16- or 17-year-old, test the setting with the account type in mind: private status may prevent a non-follower from sending a request even when an adult account would show a Requests option. Do not promise a teen that changing one menu will override TikTok’s age protections.
Family Pairing
Family Pairing can affect whether a teenager may change privacy and messaging settings independently. If a setting is locked, unavailable or repeatedly reverts, the account owner should check the linked Family Pairing controls with the parent or guardian who manages them. The parent or guardian may need to make or approve the change.
Control who can comment
Comments are controlled separately from followers and messages. Open Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Privacy > Comments. TikTok documents the available choices in Manage comments.
Choose the audience allowed to comment
The choices depend on whether the account is public or private:
| Account type | Comment audience |
|---|---|
| Public account | Everyone |
| Private account | Followers |
| Either account type where offered | Friends—followers you follow back |
If you choose Followers, the setting applies to people who are allowed to follow the private account. If you choose Friends, the audience is narrower: it is limited to mutual follows, meaning people who follow you and whom you also follow.

Do not confuse Friends with every person you know or every account you follow. TikTok defines this audience as followers you follow back. A person who follows you but is not followed by you is not part of that mutual-follow group.
Turn comments off for one post
You can disable comments on an individual post instead of changing the account-wide comment audience. This is useful when most posts can receive replies but a particular video should not. Open the post’s privacy or sharing controls and switch comments off for that post. The post-level choice does not change the default for future uploads.
Use the post-level option when the concern is limited to one video, such as a post that has attracted unwanted attention. Use the account-wide Comments menu when you want the same audience rule to apply broadly. After changing either setting, inspect the specific post as well as the account default so you know which rule is active.
Use the settings together: practical configurations
There is no single “fully private” switch that controls every interaction. Match each setting to the outcome you want:
- Limit who can see posts: turn on Private account, approve followers individually, and inspect the audience on each post.
- Stop unsolicited message requests: open Direct messages and set the relevant sender categories to Don’t receive.
- Screen messages without blocking every request: leave the category on Requests, then accept, delete or report each request.
- Allow comments only from your community: use Followers on a private account.
- Allow replies only from mutual connections: choose Friends when that option is available.
- Prevent replies on a sensitive upload: turn comments off on that individual post.
These controls answer different questions: who can view posts, who can initiate a conversation, and who can reply publicly. Changing one does not automatically change the others.
Example: maximum practical restriction
For a user who wants the narrowest supported audience, turn on Private account, review and remove unwanted existing followers, set both message categories to Don’t receive, choose Friends for comments if that option is available, and turn comments off on particularly sensitive posts. This still does not hide the name, username or profile photo, and it does not make the account unsearchable.
Example: private posts but screened contact
Another user may want approved followers to see posts while remaining open to possible new contacts. That user can keep Private account on, leave a message category at Requests and review each request, then set comments to Followers or Friends. This preserves a decision point for messages without opening every post to the public.

Before relying on private mode, separate public profile details from restricted content. TikTok’s official wording says your display name, username and profile photo are always visible to anyone on or off the service. Search visibility therefore remains possible even after the account is private.
A person who finds the account can identify it from those details, but approval is still required for follower access to posts governed by private-account rules. If you do not want an existing follower to retain access, remove that follower through the follower-management screen; making the account private alone does not describe a universal removal of approved followers.
Public content may also be shared by people on or off TikTok, depending on the relevant settings. A private switch reduces future exposure for posts covered by private-account rules; it should not be presented as a guarantee that an earlier link, saved copy or prior interaction has vanished.

Troubleshoot missing or ineffective privacy controls
The Private account switch is not where expected
- Confirm that you are in Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Privacy, not in the general account-editing screen.
- Update your expectation of the label if TikTok has changed the app interface; the privacy section is the relevant location.
- Check whether a teen-account restriction or Family Pairing control limits changes.
A person can still find the account
That is consistent with private mode. Searchability and visibility of the name, username and profile photo remain, so private mode should not be treated as an unsearchable or anonymous profile.
A person can still appear in the messaging flow
Review the sender category in Privacy > Direct messages, then check whether the account is one you follow, follows you back, or is covered by a teen-account rule. A request can exist when the category is set to Requests; use Don’t receive for a category from which you do not want requests.
Comments are still available on a post
Open Privacy > Comments and verify the account-wide audience. Then inspect the individual post, because a post can have its own comment setting. On a private account, the documented audience choices differ from those on a public account.
A teen cannot change a setting
First identify whether the account is 13–15 or 16–17, because direct messaging is unavailable for ages 13–15 and more restricted for older teens. If Family Pairing is enabled, the parent or guardian managing the pairing may need to change the setting.
A follower still sees content after the switch
Check whether that person was already an approved follower. Private mode does not state that existing approved followers are automatically removed. Review the follower list and remove anyone who should not retain access, then check the audience setting on the relevant post.

Privacy checklist after changing the account
- Verify that Private account is switched on under Privacy.
- Review the follower list and remove anyone who should not retain approved access.
- Open Direct messages and set both sender categories deliberately to Requests or Don’t receive.
- Check whether people you follow can message under the private-account relationship rule.
- Open Comments and choose Followers or Friends when those options fit your audience.
- For posts that should have no public replies, disable comments on the post itself.
- Inspect each new post’s audience before publishing; account privacy does not replace post-level review.
- If the account belongs to a 13–17-year-old, verify the age-specific rules and Family Pairing controls before troubleshooting the app.
- Remember that your name, username and profile photo remain visible and searchable.
Frequently asked questions
Does making TikTok private hide my username?
No. TikTok says your name, username and profile photo remain visible to anyone on or off TikTok. Private mode limits follower approval and access to posts governed by the private-account rules; it does not make the profile anonymous.
Can people still search for a private TikTok account?
Yes. The account remains searchable. Someone may find the profile and see its basic identifying details, but approval is required before that person can follow and view restricted posts.
Does switching to private remove my current followers?
Not automatically. Review the follower list separately and remove an existing follower if that person should no longer have approved access.
How do I stop strangers from sending TikTok message requests?
Go to Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Privacy > Direct messages. For each relevant category, choose Don’t receive instead of Requests. The categories and available choices can vary by age and account type.

Can I let only friends comment?
When the option is available, choose Friends in Privacy > Comments. TikTok uses Friends to mean followers you follow back. On a private account, Followers is another documented audience choice; on a public account, Everyone may be available.
Can I disable comments on just one video?
Yes. Open that video’s privacy or sharing controls and turn comments off for the individual post. This does not change the account-wide default for later uploads.
Why are direct messages unavailable for my child?
TikTok says users aged 13–15 cannot use direct messaging. Ages 16–17 have additional age- and account-type-specific limits, and Family Pairing may control whether settings can be changed.

Bottom line
Turn on Private account to require follower approval, then configure Direct messages and Comments separately. Use Requests when you want to screen contacts, Don’t receive when you want to stop requests from a category, Followers or Friends to narrow comments, and post-level controls when one video needs stricter treatment. Private mode improves control over posts and followers, but it does not hide your name, username or profile photo, remove existing followers automatically, or make the account impossible to find.
