Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallHow do I check if a marketplace seller is legit? Treat verification as a series of checks, not a guarantee. Marketplace refund and dispute rules differ, reviews can be manipulated, and neither a high rating nor a legal disclosure proves that a seller or item is risk-free. Before paying, confirm the marketplace’s protections, investigate the seller and the specific listing, keep communication and payment on-platform, and save records in case you need to make a claim.
Why marketplace safety depends on the transaction
A marketplace may provide the website, payment tools and search results while independent sellers supply the goods. That division means your remedies depend on the platform’s current terms, the seller’s status, the item, your payment method and the reason for the dispute. One operator may mediate a missing parcel; another may leave the buyer and seller to resolve it themselves.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Read the marketplace’s refund, return and dispute policy before ordering. Check that the policy applies to the seller and the particular item, not merely to purchases made on the site in general. Look for the claim deadline, evidence requirements, who pays return shipping and whether the platform can withhold a refund while it investigates. Policies and payment protections can change, so use the current version and your card issuer’s current terms.

A practical pre-purchase verification sequence
1. Investigate the marketplace’s rules
- Search the marketplace name with words such as “complaint” or “review” to find reports about how it handles failed orders.
- Read the refund, return, cancellation and dispute pages. Identify whether the marketplace itself handles a claim or simply gives you the seller’s contact details.
- Confirm which payment methods qualify for the site’s buyer protection and how long you have to open a case.
- Check whether the policy excludes categories such as used goods, digital items, vehicles, tickets or transactions completed outside the platform.
Do this before you compare prices. A low price is not useful if the available remedy does not cover the risk you are taking.
2. Examine the seller’s identity and history
Open the seller profile rather than relying on the name shown beside the listing. Look for a usable contact method, the length of the account’s history, the number of completed transactions and feedback from recent buyers. A seller with years of activity and a consistent record is a different signal from a newly created account with a handful of reviews, but neither is proof of an honest transaction.
Ask any material question through the marketplace’s messaging system: Is the pictured item the actual unit? What is its condition? When will it ship? Will the seller accept a return if it is not as described? Keeping the question and answer in the platform creates a dated record that can help if the description later changes.
3. Read reviews for evidence, not just a star average
Sort or filter feedback to see recent comments and lower ratings. Detailed comments can reveal recurring problems with condition, packing, dispatch times or communication that a five-star average hides. Consider the reviewer’s history and whether the review appears on the marketplace, on the seller’s own page or in an unaffiliated forum. A review copied across many sites, posted immediately after purchase or written without product-specific detail is weaker evidence.
Look for incentives or manipulation. The Federal Trade Commission’s guidance on online reviews explains why paid, fake or selectively solicited reviews can distort a score. A high percentage of positive ratings is therefore one signal among several, not an assurance that your item will be genuine, safe or as described.

4. Inspect the actual offer
- Compare the written description with every photograph. Prefer item-specific photographs when condition, serial number, color or included accessories matter; stock images can conceal wear or a different model.
- Read the condition field and the seller’s definitions of “new,” “refurbished,” “open box,” “used” or “parts only.” Check what is included and what is not.
- Calculate the full delivered cost, including shipping, handling, taxes, customs charges and any restocking fee disclosed in the terms.
- Find the return period, permitted reasons, return address and who pays postage. Make sure the listing’s terms do not contradict the marketplace’s general policy.
A price far below the normal range for an expensive, scarce or hard-to-find item is a warning sign that calls for more verification. It is not, by itself, proof of fraud: liquidation, damage, missing accessories or a seller who needs a fast sale can also reduce a price. Ask what explains the difference and compare the answer with the photographs and condition statement.
5. Check whether the seller can answer consistently
Send a short, specific question whose answer should be easy for a genuine seller to provide. For example, ask for a photograph of today’s date beside the item or ask whether a particular accessory is included. Evasive replies, contradictory answers, pressure to buy immediately or a request to continue the conversation by personal email or text should stop the purchase until you can verify the facts within the marketplace.
6. Keep communication and payment on-platform
Use the marketplace checkout and its message system. A request to move the deal to cash, a wire transfer, a prepaid or gift card, cryptocurrency, personal bank transfer or another untraceable route can remove buyer protections and make recovery difficult. The Federal Trade Commission recommends safer routes such as a credit card or a secure online payment system that provides buyer protections.
A credit card may provide legal dispute rights, but eligibility depends on the transaction, the card network and the issuer’s current terms. It does not guarantee reimbursement and does not eliminate the need to meet the marketplace’s claim deadline. Never share a one-time passcode or account password with a seller who says it is needed to release a shipment or refund.
7. Check product safety separately
Seller legitimacy and product safety are different questions. For a regulated or safety-critical product, look for clear instructions, warnings, the manufacturer or importer’s identity and recall information. Do not assume a marketplace’s approval means a product meets local requirements.

For shoppers in the UK, a Department for Business and Trade safety leaflet advises checking clear descriptions and warnings, applicable UKCA or CE markings and recall notices. Those marks and the associated rules are UK-context guidance; they are not universal requirements for every product or country. Verify the requirements that apply where you will use the item.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems8. Save evidence before you click Buy
Save or print the listing as it appears at the time of purchase, including photographs, price, condition, shipping charge, delivery estimate and return terms. Keep the receipt, order number, seller messages and tracking information. If the listing changes or disappears, your copy preserves what you agreed to buy.
What reviews can and cannot tell you
Reviews answer a narrow question: how some earlier buyers described their experience. They do not independently authenticate an item, test every unit or predict how a seller will handle your order. Weight recent, specific comments more heavily than a bare score, and look for patterns across different reviewers rather than one dramatic complaint.
Check whether the feedback concerns the same product and seller. On a listing that combines multiple sellers or models, an impressive score may relate to a different item. Review the date and the transaction context; a comment about shipping speed from two years ago may say little about the seller’s current warehouse or carrier.
Be cautious when all comments use similar wording, arrive in a burst, praise the seller without describing the product or appear to have been rewarded. The absence of negative reviews is not evidence that no problems exist; it may reflect a small sample, moderation or buyers who never posted.

What the U.S. INFORM Consumers Act changes
The INFORM Consumers Act creates a limited transparency layer for certain high-volume third-party sellers on covered online marketplaces. It is a U.S. law, not a global marketplace standard, and it does not certify a seller or guarantee a safe listing.
Federal Trade Commission guidance describes a general high-volume threshold of 200 or more separate sales or transactions of new or unused consumer products and at least $5,000 in gross revenue on that marketplace during a continuous 12-month period within the preceding 24 months. Statutory definitions, exceptions and coverage can be specific, so do not assume every frequent seller meets the legal definition.
| INFORM Consumers Act element | What the FTC guidance says | What it means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace duties | Covered marketplaces must collect and verify specified information from covered high-volume sellers, keep it current, make required disclosures for qualifying sellers and provide a way to report suspicious activity. | A disclosure or verified detail improves transparency, but it is not an endorsement of the item, seller or transaction. |
| General high-volume threshold | At least 200 separate sales or transactions of new or unused consumer products and at least $5,000 gross revenue on that marketplace during a continuous 12-month period in the preceding 24 months. | Sellers below a threshold, excluded by a statutory exception or using another sales channel may not be covered by this rule. |
| Additional disclosure threshold | The FTC describes listing or order-confirmation disclosures for qualifying sellers with at least $20,000 in annual gross revenue on that marketplace. | The presence or absence of this disclosure does not prove that a listing is genuine or that a refund will be available. |
The FTC’s institutional guidance explains the verification standard this way: “Although the law doesn’t list specific verification steps, the methods the online marketplace chooses must enable it ‘to reliably determine that any information and documents provided are valid, corresponding to the seller or an individual acting on the seller’s behalf, not misappropriated, and not falsified.’” That standard concerns the marketplace’s verification process; it is not a promise that every item offered by a verified seller is authentic or safe.
If a marketplace displays seller information under the law, compare it with the listing, the seller’s answers and the payment record. Report suspicious activity through the marketplace’s reporting channel rather than treating the disclosure as a reason to skip the other checks.
Warning signs that deserve a pause
- A short-duration listing offers a scarce or high-value product at a suspiciously low price.
- The seller refuses item-specific photographs or gives answers that conflict with the written description.
- The seller asks you to communicate or pay outside the marketplace, especially by overseas wire transfer, prepaid card, cryptocurrency or cash.
- The account’s feedback is recent, unusually repetitive or unrelated to the product being sold.
- The listing omits a condition, shipping cost, return address or contact method that you need to evaluate the offer.
- You are pressured to act immediately, told that marketplace rules do not apply, or asked to share login credentials or a verification code.
These are risk signals, not measured proof that a seller is fraudulent. Investigate further or choose another listing when several appear together.
Best Value
As a platform-specific example, eBay’s seller-fraud guidance identifies short listings, unusually low prices for high-value or scarce goods, attempts to move contact or payment away from eBay and untraceable payment methods as warning signs. Its policy says an off-eBay purchase is not covered by its Money Back Guarantee. Do not generalize that policy to every marketplace; read the operator’s current terms.
If the order is late, damaged or not as described
- Keep the listing, receipt, messages, photographs of the package and item, delivery scan and any inspection report. Do not return the item until you know the required address and procedure.
- Contact the seller through the marketplace, describe the problem precisely and request the remedy allowed by the listing and platform policy.
- Open the marketplace case before its stated deadline. Upload the evidence requested and keep copies of every submission.
- If the marketplace does not resolve the issue, contact your card issuer or protected payment service promptly about a possible dispute. Explain the facts and follow its documentation and timing requirements; a chargeback is not guaranteed.
- Report suspected fraud to the appropriate consumer-protection authority. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission accepts reports; other countries have their own agencies.
Do not wait for a seller who keeps promising that a parcel is “almost there.” Claim windows can expire while you are negotiating privately.
How to compare marketplace options before choosing one
When the same product appears on several sites, compare the transaction conditions rather than the headline price. Record the answers in a note before you order.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Comparison point | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Refund and dispute handling | Does the marketplace investigate and decide claims, or does it only connect you with the seller? |
| Buyer-protection scope | Does protection apply to this seller, category, condition and payment method? |
| Communication and payment | Can the entire transaction remain in the marketplace’s message and checkout systems? |
| Feedback quality | Are recent, product-specific reviews available, and can you inspect the reviewer history? |
| Returns and deadlines | What is the return window, who pays shipping, and how soon must you open a claim? |
A site with a higher price may still be the lower-risk choice if it offers a clear dispute process that covers the item and payment route. Conversely, a familiar marketplace can still leave a particular listing outside its protection.
Why records and prompt action matter
Online-shopping losses can be substantial. In a July 2020 alert, the Federal Trade Commission reported more than 86,000 online-shopping problem reports in 2019 and almost $420 million in reported losses related to online shopping since 2015. Those figures are historical totals through that publication, not a current loss estimate or a probability that any particular listing is fraudulent.
The practical lesson is timing: preserve the offer before it changes, use the platform’s formal process, and notify the payment provider while its dispute period is open. A careful record cannot make an unsafe seller safe, but it gives you the strongest evidence available if the transaction fails.
Bottom line
Before buying from a third-party seller, verify the marketplace’s actual protections, read the seller’s recent detailed feedback, inspect the specific listing and total cost, ask questions on-platform, and pay through a protected route. Treat legal disclosures, ratings and safety marks as signals with limits. If the seller pressures you off-platform or the offer cannot withstand basic questions, walk away.
