Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCreate the installer with Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool on a blank USB drive, boot the target PC from that drive, then install the edition that matches its license on the correct disk. A clean install is destructive: it removes files, applications, settings, and manufacturer customizations, so verify compatibility and complete a separate backup before deleting any partitions.
Understand what a clean installation does
A clean installation starts Windows 11 from an empty target partition. It removes the existing Windows installation, personal files on the target installation, installed applications, settings, and manufacturer customizations. It is appropriate when you want a genuinely fresh system or need to replace a damaged installation, but it is not the right first choice if you need to preserve installed programs and settings.

Microsoft’s installation-media guidance puts the warning plainly: “Back up your files before you install or reinstall Windows on your PC.” Read the current instructions in Microsoft’s Create installation media for Windows guide before starting.
Check Windows 11 compatibility before making the USB
Confirm that the target computer meets Microsoft’s published minimums. These are requirements, not performance guarantees; a PC that meets them can still feel slow with demanding software.

| Component or feature | Microsoft minimum | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster, with two or more cores | The processor must also be on Microsoft’s supported-processor list for Windows 11. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | More memory may be necessary for your applications, but 4 GB is the stated minimum. |
| Storage | 64 GB or larger | Leave additional free space for updates, applications, and personal data. |
| Firmware | UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability | A legacy BIOS-only configuration does not meet the stated Windows 11 requirement. |
| Security module | TPM 2.0 | TPM may be disabled in firmware even when the hardware supports it. |
| Graphics | DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver | Check the graphics adapter and driver support, not just the monitor resolution. |
| Display | A compatible high-definition display greater than 9 inches diagonally, with 8 bits per color channel | This is a display requirement rather than a recommendation for image quality. |
Microsoft also recommends checking eligibility with its PC Health Check utility. If the computer fails a requirement, do not assume the installer will make unsupported hardware reliable or eligible for support. Review the official Windows 11 system requirements and resolve firmware settings or hardware issues first.
Confirm the edition and activation status
Open the existing Windows installation and note its edition, such as Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro. In Windows 11, the activation page is under Settings > System > Activation. Record whether Windows reports that it is activated and whether activation is associated with a digital license.
Install the same edition after the wipe. A digital license normally permits reinstalling that matching edition on the same device without entering a product key. Installing a different edition can leave Windows unactivated even when the hardware itself is licensed. A major hardware change, especially replacing the motherboard, can affect activation and may require additional recovery steps. Microsoft explains these cases in Activate Windows and its reinstall-with-installation-media instructions.

Back up data before you erase anything
Copy documents, photographs, browser exports, password-manager recovery information, email archives, saved games, encryption recovery keys, and any other irreplaceable data to storage that will not be touched by the installation. Microsoft lists an external hard drive, another USB storage device, or cloud storage as possible destinations. A backup on a second internal partition is not sufficient if you may select the wrong disk or if that drive fails.

What you need to create Windows 11 installation media
- A working Windows PC with internet access to download Microsoft’s tool.
- A blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB capacity. The Media Creation Tool erases the drive, so do not use one containing files you need.
- The target computer and a reliable power source. Keep a laptop connected to its charger throughout setup.
- Your backup and license information, prepared before the tool is run.
The 8 GB figure is Microsoft’s minimum for this workflow; it does not imply a particular USB brand or transfer speed. The tool formats the selected drive and places Windows installation files on it.
Create a bootable Windows 11 USB with Media Creation Tool
- On the working PC, open Microsoft’s Create installation media for Windows page and download the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool.
- Insert the blank USB drive. If File Explorer shows files on it, move them elsewhere because the creation process will delete its contents.
- Run the downloaded tool. Approve the Windows permission prompt if one appears.
- Accept the license terms, then choose the option to create installation media for another PC.
- Confirm the language and Windows 11 edition, or clear the option to use recommended settings if you need to select them manually. Use settings appropriate for the target computer.
- Choose USB flash drive as the media type.
- Select the correct USB drive from the list. Check its capacity and drive letter carefully; selecting another removable drive will erase that drive.
- Allow the tool to download Windows and make the drive bootable. Download time depends on the connection, and the USB may be unavailable in File Explorer while it is being prepared.
- When the tool reports that the USB drive is ready, use Windows’ safe-eject command before removing it.
The resulting media can install Windows on the target PC and can also be used to access Windows recovery tools. Creating it does not itself change the target computer.
Boot the target computer from the USB
- Shut down the target PC completely, insert the installation USB, and turn the PC on.
- Immediately open the manufacturer’s one-time boot menu. The key varies by manufacturer and model; common choices include a function key or Esc, but do not rely on a universal shortcut. Use the computer maker’s manual or support site for the exact instruction.
- Choose the USB device, preferably the entry identified as a UEFI device, and press Enter.
- When Windows Setup appears, select the language, time and currency format, and keyboard layout, then choose Next and Install now.
If the normal Windows desktop starts instead, restart and try the boot menu again. If the USB is absent from the menu, insert it directly into another port, recreate the media, and check the manufacturer’s instructions for boot order and UEFI settings. Do not disable security features or switch firmware modes casually; a mode change can make an existing installation or disk layout unbootable.
Clean-install Windows 11 on the intended disk
1. Handle the product-key screen
Setup may ask for a product key. If the PC already has a valid digital license for the edition you are reinstalling, choose the option to continue without entering a key when it is offered. Activation can occur after installation once Windows is online. If you have a separate key, enter it only when you have verified that it belongs to the target edition.
2. Select the licensed edition
Choose the edition that matches the activation or license information you recorded earlier. Home and Pro are not interchangeable for activation purposes. If the edition list does not match what you expect, stop and resolve the license question before proceeding rather than hoping activation will correct it later.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Identify the target disk before deleting partitions
Use disk capacity, the computer’s storage documentation, and the backup plan to identify the intended installation disk. Microsoft’s cited clean-install workflow uses Disk 0 as the target example and instructs users to delete its partitions only when Disk 0 is the disk they intend to erase. Do not treat “Disk 0” as permission to delete partitions on every drive in the list.
With the correct target confirmed, select each partition on that disk and choose Delete, accepting the warning for each one, until that disk shows a single block of unallocated space. Do not delete or format partitions on other listed disks. If the sizes, labels, or number of drives do not make the target unmistakable, cancel setup and verify the hardware instead of guessing.
5. Install to unallocated space
Select the unallocated space on the verified target disk and choose Next. Windows Setup creates the partitions it needs and copies the files. The computer will restart several times. Leave the USB inserted until Setup has copied the files, but when the PC restarts, follow the on-screen instruction or remove the USB if it would otherwise start the installer again.
Do not power off during file copying or the first configuration stages. An interrupted installation can leave the disk without a usable operating system and require you to start the process again.

Complete first-run setup and check activation
Finish Windows’ region, keyboard, network, account, privacy, and update screens. Connect to the internet when possible; activation and many device drivers depend on connectivity. After reaching the desktop, open Settings > System > Activation and confirm that the installed edition is the one you intended and that Windows reports activation.
Run Windows Update, restart when requested, and then install drivers supplied by the PC manufacturer only when Windows Update has not provided a suitable driver. Check Device Manager for warning icons, test Wi-Fi or Ethernet, audio, display output, sleep, Bluetooth, and any specialty hardware. Reinstall applications from their official sources and restore personal data from the separate backup only after the new installation is stable.
If activation does not occur, first confirm internet access and the edition shown on the Activation page. Re-entering a key for the wrong edition will not solve an edition mismatch. A motherboard replacement or other significant hardware change can require the license to be re-associated or otherwise resolved through Microsoft’s activation process.
Clean install versus in-place reinstall
Booting from USB and deleting partitions is only one reinstall method. Microsoft’s in-place reinstall workflow runs from the existing Windows installation and presents preservation choices.
Recommended Free Tools
| Consideration | Clean installation from USB | In-place reinstall from existing Windows |
|---|---|---|
| Personal files | Removed from the erased target partitions | Can be kept, depending on the selected option |
| Installed applications | Removed | Can be kept when the “keep personal files and apps” option is available |
| Settings and manufacturer customizations | Removed and rebuilt from defaults | May remain when preservation options are selected |
| Does Windows need to start first? | No; the PC boots from installation media | Yes; Setup is launched from the running Windows installation |
| Best fit | A fresh start, a thoroughly corrupted installation, or a deliberate disk replacement | Repairing Windows while preserving as much of the current environment as possible |
The in-place choices can include keeping personal files and apps, keeping files only, or keeping nothing. Read the selected option carefully; choosing “keep nothing” is still destructive even though Setup was launched from the desktop. Microsoft describes these alternatives in Reinstall Windows with the installation media.

Troubleshoot the most common installation problems
The USB does not appear in the boot menu
- Shut down fully and reconnect the drive directly to the PC rather than through a hub.
- Try another USB port and recreate the media if the tool reported an error.
- Use the manufacturer’s documented boot-menu key and verify that the firmware is set to boot in the mode supported by the installation media.
- If the drive appears but setup will not start, confirm that it was created by Microsoft’s tool and that the download completed successfully.
Setup says the PC cannot run Windows 11
Recheck TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability, UEFI mode, processor support, memory, storage, and graphics requirements. Some capabilities are disabled in firmware by default; consult the computer maker’s documentation before changing them. Do not treat a bypass or an unsupported installation as an assured solution: Microsoft’s requirements are the eligibility baseline.
The wrong disk or partitions are displayed
Stop before deleting anything. Compare capacities with the computer’s specifications, disconnect nonessential drives, and use the manufacturer’s storage documentation to identify the target. Disk numbering can differ between computers, so the label alone is not proof of identity.
Windows is not activated after setup
Connect to the internet, open Settings > System > Activation, and verify that the installed edition matches the license. If the device has undergone a significant hardware change, activation may not transfer automatically. Use the activation troubleshooter or the account and key information associated with the original license; do not assume that a clean installation can create a license that the hardware does not have.
Files are missing after the installation
A clean install cannot restore data that was erased unless it exists in a verified backup or synchronization service. If the files were not backed up separately, stop writing new data to the affected disk and seek appropriate data-recovery advice rather than continuing to install applications.
A safe order of operations
- Check Windows 11 eligibility and firmware capabilities.
- Record the current edition and activation state.
- Back up and verify important data on separate storage.
- Create the installer on a blank USB drive of at least 8 GB.
- Boot the target PC using its manufacturer-specific boot instructions.
- Match the edition to the license and identify the intended disk.
- Delete partitions only on that verified target disk.
- Install to its unallocated space, complete setup, connect to the internet, and verify activation.
- Apply updates, check drivers and hardware, then restore data and applications.
Following this order prevents the two costliest mistakes: erasing the wrong storage device and discovering after installation that the selected edition or hardware configuration is not eligible.
