Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFortnite has no single, officially documented “backup” that captures both your account and every gameplay setting. Protect the Epic Games account that owns your progress, save your 2FA recovery codes, link the correct platform accounts, and treat settings separately: Epic’s published guidance does not confirm that Fortnite controls are included in Epic Games Launcher Cloud Saves or provide a settings export/import tool. Before changing devices, record the settings you would need to recreate.
What you can—and cannot—back up
There are two different jobs hiding behind the word backup:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Account access: protect the Epic Games account, its email address, password, two-factor authentication (2FA), backup codes and linked platform accounts.
- Gameplay configuration: preserve sensitivity, keybinds, graphics, audio, controller, accessibility and HUD choices so you can reproduce them on another installation.
Epic documents account-security, 2FA recovery and cross-device account-linking procedures. It also documents a Cloud Saves switch in the Epic Games Launcher. However, the Cloud Saves help page does not say that Fortnite gameplay settings are stored there, and Epic’s reviewed support pages do not describe a Fortnite settings export or import procedure. Do not assume that enabling Cloud Saves will restore your controls or preferences.
The safest approach is therefore layered: secure the account first, verify where your Fortnite progress lives, keep recovery information available, and make your own readable record of settings.

1. Identify the Epic account that actually owns your Fortnite progress
Do this before changing a password, enabling 2FA or unlinking anything. A console profile can be associated with an Epic account that was created or completed later, and it is possible to have more than one Epic account. Epic notes that 2FA can appear inactive in Fortnite when it was enabled on a different Epic account than the one currently being used.
- Sign in to the Epic account you believe is connected to Fortnite.
- Check that the account email is one you control for the long term.
- Confirm that the platform account you play on is linked to this Epic account.
- Open Fortnite and verify that your expected progression and purchases are present before making security or linking changes.
Console players may need to finish setting up an Epic account with an email address before they can enable 2FA. If Fortnite says 2FA is not active, first sign out and identify the Epic account associated with the platform profile rather than enabling 2FA repeatedly on a different account. Epic’s explanation is at I enabled Two-factor authentication (2FA) but in Fortnite shows it is not active.
2. Secure the account and its email address
Use a unique Epic password
Choose a password that is not reused on another service. Epic recommends considering a password manager to generate and store strong, unique passwords; the service is optional, but reusing a password creates a single point of failure. Store the new credential in the manager before signing out of your existing sessions.
Keep the email account recoverable
Your Epic email is part of the recovery chain. Use an address you expect to retain, verify it when Epic requests verification, and secure the mailbox with its own unique password and 2FA. Losing the email account can make account recovery harder even when your Fortnite platform profile still works.
Protect linked platform and social accounts
Epic recommends enabling 2FA on linked platform or social accounts as well. Someone who takes over a linked account may be able to use it to access the Epic account, so protecting only Epic while leaving a connected account exposed leaves a gap.

3. Choose and configure a 2FA method
Epic lists four available methods. An authenticator app—Epic Authenticator or a compatible third-party app—generates or approves codes on a device. Email sends a code to the verified Epic email. SMS sends a code to a supported phone number. Epic says an authenticator app provides the strongest protection; some regional phone numbers do not support SMS, so players in those regions should select another method.

|---|---|---|
| Epic Authenticator | Approval or code in Epic’s authenticator experience | Keep the authenticator device available and save the backup codes Epic provides. |
| Third-party authenticator app | Time-based code in the authenticator app | Protect access to the app and retain Epic’s backup codes if the phone is lost. |
| Email authentication | Code delivered to your verified Epic email | You must be able to sign in to that mailbox; secure it with its own password and 2FA. |
| SMS authentication | Code sent by text message | Some regional phone numbers are unsupported; keep another recovery route available. |
Configure 2FA only after confirming you are in the Epic account that owns your Fortnite progress. The method list and regional SMS qualification are documented in What two-factor authentication (2FA) methods are available to use with my Epic Games account?.
4. Save the 2FA recovery codes
When you enable authenticator-app 2FA, Epic provides backup codes. Each is an eight-digit code. They are an emergency credential, not a record of Fortnite controls, so store them privately and somewhere you can reach if your primary phone or authenticator is unavailable.
- Start an Epic sign-in and choose Try another way when the normal 2FA method is unavailable.
- Select the backup-code option.
- Enter one of the eight-digit codes.
- After regaining access, review your 2FA settings and generate or replace recovery information if Epic presents that option.
Email verification is another recovery path described by Epic. Do not post backup codes in chat, screenshots shared publicly or an unencrypted note synchronized to an account you do not control. Epic does not prescribe a particular physical storage product; the requirement is that the codes remain confidential and available when needed.

5. Make Fortnite progress follow the correct account across devices
Settings and progression are separate concerns. Epic says Fortnite progress syncs across devices when each platform account is linked to an active Epic Games account. The documented process allows only one account of each platform type to be linked at a time.
Before linking another device
- Identify which platform currently displays the progress you want to keep.
- Sign in to the Epic account associated with that progress.
- Check the existing platform links before adding another platform account.
- Do not unlink accounts casually; an account that looks empty may be connected to a different Epic account than expected.
When two platforms show different progress
Epic’s documented procedure does not merge divergent progress from separate platform accounts. You must choose which platform’s progress to keep and follow the platform-specific linking instructions for that account. Make that decision before attempting a migration; linking the wrong account can leave you looking at the wrong inventory or progression.
Epic’s cross-device instructions are in How do I get my Fortnite, Fall Guys, or Rocket League progress to sync across all of my devices?.
6. Enable Epic Games Launcher Cloud Saves carefully on PC
Epic provides a Cloud Saves toggle in the PC launcher, but the support article does not identify Fortnite gameplay settings as data covered by that feature. Use it for the games and data Epic supports, not as proof that your Fortnite controls will transfer.

- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Click the Settings icon.
- Click Settings in the launcher menu.
- Select Enable Cloud Saves.
Epic warns that if you play games on more than one machine, disabling and enabling Cloud Save can result in Cloud Save conflicts. Avoid toggling the feature back and forth while two computers are being used, and read any conflict prompt before choosing a file set. The official steps and warning appear in Enable Cloud Saves in the Epic Games Launcher.
7. Preserve your Fortnite settings manually
Because Epic does not publish a universal settings export/import workflow in the reviewed guidance, create a human-readable record before changing hardware, reinstalling or moving from one platform to another. This is a practical safeguard, not an Epic-supported backup format.
Record the values that affect play
- Controls: keyboard and mouse bindings, controller layout, custom buttons, build and edit controls, and confirm or reset behaviors.
- Aiming: look sensitivity, aim-down-sights sensitivity, build and edit multipliers, dead zones, acceleration and any scoped or per-axis values you use.
- Video: display mode, resolution, frame-rate limit, brightness, graphics quality, view distance, effects, shadows, motion blur and performance-oriented options.
- Audio: master, effects, dialogue, music, voice-chat volume, output device and voice-chat input settings.
- Interface and accessibility: HUD placement or scale, visual indicators, subtitles, color or contrast options, and other accessibility toggles.
- Gameplay preferences: interaction, sprint, auto-open doors, toggle or hold behaviors, and other preference switches that change how inputs behave.
Use screenshots or a written sheet
Capture each relevant settings page with screenshots, or write the exact value beside a clear label. Include the date, platform, input device and Fortnite version shown on that installation. Screenshots are quick to compare; a text sheet is easier to search and update. Keep the record private if it contains account identifiers, and store it somewhere you can access without relying on the device you are replacing.
Test the record before you need it
On a spare installation or after a minor settings change, use the record to restore one category and verify that the labels match the current Fortnite interface. Interfaces can change, so a dated record is a reference rather than a guarantee that every option will retain the same name or location.

8. A safe move-to-new-device sequence
- Confirm ownership: sign in to the Epic account that shows the intended Fortnite progress.
- Verify recovery: confirm the email works, the password is unique, 2FA is active on this account, and backup codes are available.
- Check platform links: make sure the new device’s platform account will be linked to the account containing the progress you want.
- Capture settings: record controls, sensitivity, video, audio, interface and accessibility values before removing the old installation.
- Install and sign in: use the same Epic account on the new device; do not create a second account simply because the first sign-in screen is unfamiliar.
- Link only the intended platform account: remember that Epic documents one linked account per platform type and does not merge conflicting progress.
- Restore settings manually: enter the recorded values, then test movement, aiming, building, editing, audio and display performance in a safe match or practice area.
- Handle Cloud Saves separately: if using the Epic Games Launcher on PC, enable Cloud Saves through Launcher Settings and respond cautiously to any conflict prompt.
9. Troubleshooting common backup and transfer problems
“2FA is not active” in Fortnite
Check that the Epic account currently signed in is the same account where 2FA was enabled. Epic identifies enabling 2FA on another Epic account as a common cause. Console users should also complete the Epic account setup with an email address if prompted.

You lost your phone or authenticator
At sign-in, choose Try another way and use an eight-digit backup code, or use email verification where available. If neither route works, follow Epic’s account-recovery prompts rather than creating a replacement account that will not contain your original progress.
The new device shows the wrong progression
Stop before unlinking accounts. Determine which Epic account and platform account display the progression you intend to keep. Epic’s documented process cannot combine separate platform progress, so linking changes should follow that choice.
Your controls did not appear after sign-in
This is consistent with Epic’s documentation not establishing that Fortnite gameplay settings are included in Launcher Cloud Saves or automatically exported between platforms. Use your screenshots or written record to recreate the controls and preferences manually.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The launcher reports a Cloud Save conflict
Do not repeatedly disable and re-enable Cloud Saves while playing on multiple machines. Epic warns that this pattern can create conflicts. Read the launcher’s choices, identify which local or cloud version contains the data you intend to retain, and keep a separate copy of your settings record because Cloud Saves are not confirmed as a Fortnite-settings backup.
10. Keep the backup useful over time
- Update the settings record whenever you change sensitivity, binds or major graphics options.
- Replace saved recovery codes if you regenerate them, and remove obsolete copies.
- Review the Epic email address and linked platform accounts after changing consoles, phone numbers or email providers.
- Test that you can access the email account and authenticator before traveling or retiring an old phone.
- Keep at least one recovery route independent of the device you are replacing.
The practical boundary is clear: Epic’s official tools protect account access and help synchronize progress through account linking, while the available guidance does not promise automatic Fortnite settings restoration. A secure account plus a private, current settings record is the dependable way to prepare for a reinstall or device change.
