To fit a resume on one page in Google Docs, switch the document to Pages layout, trim lower-priority content, adjust paragraph spacing and page settings, then check the actual page view. Make changes in that order: removing unnecessary content usually preserves readability better than shrinking everything.
Set the document to Pages
A one-page resume is a page-layout goal, so use Google Docs’ Pages format rather than Pageless. Pages supports page breaks and page setup; Pageless is designed for continuous scrolling and does not offer some page-specific features. See Google’s Pages and Pageless overview.

- Open File > Page setup.
- Select Pages if the document is currently Pageless, then confirm the change.
- Use the document’s page-based view to see where content actually falls across pages.
Page setup controls such as paper size, orientation, and margins are available in Pages. Google’s instructions are in Change page settings on Google Docs.
Reduce content before compressing it
Review the resume for repeated points, dated details, or information that is less relevant to the role. Cut or tighten those first, while keeping the accomplishments and qualifications that matter most. Whether a resume should be one page depends on the applicant and context; the available Google Docs guidance does not establish a universal hiring rule.

Adjust line and paragraph spacing
Extra spacing can push a small amount of text onto a second page. Select the affected text, then open Format > Line & paragraph spacing. Choose a suitable preset or custom spacing, and check whether extra space before or after paragraphs can be removed. Google also provides paragraph pagination options such as Keep with next and Keep lines together; these can change where text breaks across pages. See Google’s formatting guidance.
Change margins or page settings carefully
If the resume still overflows, open File > Page setup and review the margins, paper size, and orientation. Make one adjustment at a time and check the page layout after each change. Google Docs provides these controls, but the cited guidance does not specify a universally correct resume font size or margin. Avoid shrinking type or tightening the layout until the text is hard to read.

Check templates for hidden tables
Some resume templates use tables to position their content. A Google Docs Editors Community answer dated 2025-02-21 identifies excessive text, line spacing, minimum row height, and large margins as possible reasons a template spills onto another page. This is community troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee that every overflowing template uses tables.

Verify the final page count
Review the complete resume in Pages or print layout after editing; a continuous Pageless view does not reliably show printed page count. If an unwanted page break is responsible for the extra page, place the cursor immediately below the break and delete it. Google explains page breaks and margin controls in Add page breaks & move margins.
