No—not in the sense of owning the film or its copyright. Buying a movie through Vudu, now called Fandango at Home, gives you licensed access to watch it under the service’s terms. Some purchases can also be shared with linked digital retailers, but eligibility is limited. A digital purchase is not the same as owning a disc or receiving an unrestricted copy.
What does “buy” mean on Vudu or Fandango at Home?
“Buy” is the retailer’s label for a transaction that gives you a digital viewing entitlement. Fandango’s current Streaming Policy describes purchased content and associated locker-service entitlements. The Movies Anywhere Terms of Use are explicit that the service is governed by a license agreement, not a sale or transfer of rights in the content; buying a license to stream or download does not create an ownership interest in the movie.

That distinction is between access and copyright: the purchase lets you stream or, where the service and title allow it, download under applicable terms. It does not make you the copyright owner or give you an unrestricted movie file. This is a practical explanation of the cited service terms, not a jurisdiction-specific legal opinion.
Can a Vudu purchase appear in Movies Anywhere?
Sometimes. Fandango says account linking is required for locker access, but not every Fandango purchase qualifies. Its policy warns that some eligible-for-locker EST purchases may be available through one locker but not multiple lockers, while content not purchased on an EST basis is not made available through a locker service. Movies Anywhere can share eligible entitlements among linked participating retailers, subject to title availability at the receiving retailer; each retailer’s own rules govern playback on its service.

To check a movie, look for Movies Anywhere eligibility on its Fandango at Home listing, link the accounts if the title qualifies, then confirm that the movie appears in the connected library. Linking does not make every purchase portable, nor does it provide a restriction-free file.
Retailers and studios are not a permanent roster
As of June 8, 2026, Movies Anywhere listed Apple iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango, Google Play/YouTube, Xfinity, Verizon Fios TV, and DIRECTV as digital retailers. Its participating studios included Sony, Universal, Disney/20th Century, Warner Bros., and Lionsgate. The participant list says participants may change, so check it and the specific title before relying on a connection.

Digital purchase versus a Blu-ray or DVD
| Option | What you get | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fandango at Home digital purchase | A licensed digital viewing entitlement governed by the service terms. | Title eligibility for locker sharing, account-link requirements, participating retailers, and the playback rules of each service. |
| Physical Blu-ray or DVD | A physical disc in the format stated on its package. | That the package includes the disc format you want; whether it includes a digital-copy code; and the code’s redemption terms. |
A disc is a separate physical format, but any digital-copy code included with an eligible package provides licensed digital access under separate terms—not copyright ownership. For example, Universal’s digital-copy terms cover eligible Blu-ray/DVD offers; not every disc includes a code.
Can access change after you buy?
Fandango’s Terms of Use make access subject to the terms in effect at the relevant time. Movies Anywhere’s terms reserve the ability to modify or stop parts of its service. Those provisions mean a digital entitlement is governed by service rules that can change; they do not establish that a particular movie will disappear or predict that a service will shut down. Read the current terms if a specific account or title is important to you.
