People change a Wi-Fi password to stop people or devices that should no longer have access from joining the network. It is especially useful after the password has been shared more widely than intended or may have been exposed. Changing the Wi-Fi password does not, by itself, change the password used to manage the router.
What changing a Wi-Fi password actually does
Devices need the current Wi-Fi network password to connect. Replacing it withdraws access from anyone who does not receive the new password, which can help when access has spread beyond the people you intended to share it with or you suspect someone unauthorized is using the network. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that a unique, secure network password helps prevent strangers from getting onto your network; nearby users on an unprotected network may use its internet connection and could see personal information. Which password are you changing?
A Wi-Fi password and a router administrator password are separate credentials with different jobs. Changing one does not automatically change the other.
- Wi-Fi network password: lets a device join the wireless network.
- Router administrator password: lets someone open router settings, where they may change the Wi-Fi password and other security settings.
If the router still has its default administrator password, changing only the Wi-Fi password leaves the settings interface at risk: someone who can access it may change the network password or undo security settings. Change the default administrator credentials as well. The FTC and Microsoft both advise users to replace default router credentials. FTC guidance · Microsoft: Setting up a wireless network in Windows

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
When does it make sense to change it?
Change the network password when there is a concrete reason to withdraw access—for example, it was shared with more people than you intended, or you suspect it has been exposed or used without permission. A new password is an access-control measure, not proof that the router or every connected device is secure.
The FTC’s consumer guidance reviewed here does not prescribe a routine rotation interval. It emphasizes using a unique, secure password and changing default settings; it does not say that everyone must change a home Wi-Fi password on a fixed schedule. Choose timing based on access changes or a suspected exposure rather than treating a calendar interval as an official requirement.

- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
How the network password fits with encryption
The password controls who can join; the encryption setting protects wireless communications. These controls are related but not interchangeable. The FTC recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal. Microsoft recommends WPA3 when the router and computer support it. The FTC identifies WPA and WEP as outdated and insecure. FTC guidance · Microsoft support guidance

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Sharing access without giving out the main password
A guest network gives visitors a separate login, so fewer people need the primary Wi-Fi password. The FTC says this can also help keep malware on a guest device away from the primary network. If your router supports guest access, use it when you want visitors to get online without sharing the main network credentials. FTC guidance
What to expect after changing the password
Devices using the old password will need the new one to reconnect. That includes phones, computers, televisions, and other devices configured for the network. Keep the new network security key somewhere safe; Microsoft recommends storing it securely. Microsoft support guidance

Change the credentials safely
- Find the router maker and model. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact router; menus and steps vary by model. The FTC recommends contacting the manufacturer if its instructions do not resolve the issue. FTC guidance
- Open the router’s settings using its administrator credentials. If those credentials are still the defaults, replace them with a unique administrator password.
- Set a unique Wi-Fi network password. Use WPA3 Personal if supported; otherwise use WPA2 Personal where available.
- Save the new key securely and reconnect your devices. Devices still configured with the former password will need the new one.
- Check the encryption options if the router offers only WPA or WEP. Update its software, then check again for WPA2 or WPA3. If neither is available after updating, the FTC says to consider a new router.
For broader context, NIST’s 2024 publication on consumer-grade router security describes how these routers support home networks used for smart-home devices and remote work. It does not provide a statistic about how often people change Wi-Fi passwords. NISTIR 8425A, published September 10, 2024
