Make the tribute about the wrestler’s work and the meaning it holds for fans—not about exploiting grief. Before editing, decide where the video will be shown, check the family’s public wishes, and confirm that you have permission or a suitable license for every clip, photograph, recording, and song. A tribute is not automatically fair use, and credit or a disclaimer does not clear copyrighted material.
1. Decide the audience and purpose
A video for private viewing, a memorial service, and a public social-media upload are different projects. Choose the destination before you edit, and decide whether the video will be monetized. Those choices affect which permissions and music licenses you need to check.

If you plan to upload to YouTube, remember that an unlisted video is still uploaded to the platform; its privacy setting does not grant rights to use the material.

Give the video one clear idea rather than trying to cover everything. It might celebrate a career, a tag team, a particular era, signature performances, or what fans remember about the wrestler. Keep the emphasis on the person’s work, personality, and impact.

- Avoid making tragedy, family grief, or unverified claims the spectacle of the video.
- Do not present an allegation or cause of death as fact unless reliable sources support it.
- Do not imply that a wrestler’s family or a wrestling promotion endorses an unofficial edit.
3. Check the family’s public wishes
Look for public statements from the family or estate before using personal or memorial material. Do not repost private funeral footage just because it appeared on a fan or family page. A PWMania report dated July 9, 2024, reproduced a statement attributed to the Anoa’i family after footage from Sika Anoa’i’s funeral circulated online. The family asked fans to keep funeral videos private and distinguished that footage from a shared photo. Read the report.
That is a specific family request, not a universal rule for every wrestling family. WWE’s April 18, 2017 article about Rosey also reproduced an Anoa’i family statement asking fans to respect the privacy of his children and family while they mourned. Read WWE’s article. When in doubt, leave intimate or private material out.

Giving credit is not the same as getting a license. Nor does calling a video a tribute, adding a disclaimer, or making it nonprofit automatically authorize use. If you cannot establish the rights or an applicable legal exception, choose a different asset—such as original visuals or material you have permission to use.
5. Treat fair use as a case-by-case legal question
YouTube’s explanation of U.S. fair use identifies four factors courts consider: the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount used, and the effect on the work’s market. Courts assess the circumstances case by case; no one factor or label settles the question. YouTube’s fair-use guidance also explains that credit, a disclaimer, nonprofit intent, or adding material does not by itself guarantee fair use.

As YouTube puts it, “Including the phrase ‘no infringement intended’ won’t automatically protect you from a claim of copyright infringement.” Its automated Content ID systems cannot decide whether a use is fair use; that legal determination is for courts. A video may therefore receive a platform claim or takedown even when its creator believes the use is lawful.
This guidance concerns U.S. law. Copyright exceptions differ by jurisdiction; for example, Singapore’s Intellectual Property Office describes its own case-specific assessment of reproducing and communicating protected material. Check IPOS’s copyright information if Singapore law is relevant. If you publish elsewhere, check the law where you publish and the platform’s current rules.

6. Use music whose license covers the upload
A few seconds of a song are not automatically safe to use. The U.S. Copyright Office says, “There’s no hard and fast minimum amount of music you can use without getting permission when you need it.” It also explains that an unsuccessful attempt to contact a rights holder does not substitute for permission. Read the Copyright Office’s guidance for musicians.
Safer choices include music you created, music for which you have written permission, or music licensed for your particular video and platform. YouTube’s Audio Library is one option; check its current terms for attribution, permitted uses, and monetization. The label “royalty-free” on a third-party service does not establish that YouTube use or monetization is covered. Check YouTube Audio Library information.
7. Edit for clarity and dignity
- Open simply. Use a short title card that identifies the wrestler and the video’s focus.
- Build a clear sequence. Arrange moments chronologically or around a theme, such as a team, era, or signature performances.
- Caption accurately. Check wrestler names, match details, and dates against reliable sources; keep captions concise.
- Give moments room. Use pacing that lets the performances and memories register. Avoid rapid cuts, jokes, or dramatic effects that make death or grief feel sensational.
- Close with a simple dedication. Keep the ending personal and respectful, without suggesting official approval.
8. Review before publishing
Watch the finished video from beginning to end before posting. Verify names, dates, captions, context, and audio levels. Check that the edit does not imply family or promotion endorsement, and review the destination platform’s current copyright, music, and privacy settings. A platform upload remains subject to its rules regardless of whether it is public, private, or unlisted.
