How to Reduce Microplastic Exposure From Coffee and Other Drinks

Reusable cups, loose-leaf tea and avoiding heated plastic are practical precautions. Here’s what studies say—and why particle detection alone does not prove harm.

Use a reusable glass, ceramic, or stainless-steel cup when practical; choose loose-leaf tea with a reusable infuser instead of a plastic-containing tea bag; and avoid heating drinks in plastic if you have a suitable alternative. These are precautionary ways to reduce contact with some drink materials—not proven ways to improve health. The FDA says current evidence does not demonstrate that levels of microplastics or nanoplastics detected in foods or water pose a health risk.

Practical ways to reduce contact with drink materials

Choose a reusable cup for coffee and other drinks

For takeaway coffee or another drink, carry a reusable cup made of glass, ceramic, or stainless steel when that is convenient. HealthyWA recommends these materials as alternatives to single-use cups. This changes the material that contacts your drink; it does not establish that a particular cup prevents illness or removes particles already present in a beverage.

If you brew coffee at home, a French press with a metal filter is one reusable option. The evidence summarized here does not establish that a French press or any specific brewing device eliminates microplastics, so choose one for practical reasons rather than as a health guarantee.

For tea, check the bag material—or use loose leaves

Loose-leaf tea brewed in a reusable infuser avoids the disposable tea bag. If you prefer bags, check the manufacturer’s material information when it matters to you: a paper-looking or “eco-friendly” bag is not necessarily free of plastic, and some composite bags may also release particles. The 2026 systematic review identified release from plastic-containing bags and notes that measured amounts depend on the material and brewing conditions.

Use a reusable bottle where practical, and avoid heating drinks in plastic

HealthyWA advises reducing bottled-water use and avoiding heating food or water in plastic. A clean reusable glass or stainless-steel bottle is one practical alternative. This is not evidence that bottled water is unsafe or that tap water always contains fewer particles: the FDA says the United States has no regulatory levels for microplastics or nanoplastics in drinking water, and the available evidence does not establish a dependable comparison for every source and situation.

What studies have found about tea bags and cups

Tea-bag release varies by material and brewing conditions

A 2026 systematic review covering literature through the end of 2025 identified 19 studies that directly examined particle release from tea bags. It reports that plastic-containing bags, including non-woven polypropylene and nylon, can release micro- and nanoplastics under hot brewing conditions. Results vary with bag material, water temperature, steeping time, and agitation; the review says methods are not standardized and further risk assessment is needed.

Australia’s 2026 Microplastics and Health Report cites one study reporting 11.6 billion microparticles and 3.1 billion nanoparticles per cup at 95°C from a polyamide tea bag. That is a result from one cited study, not a universal estimate for all tea bags, a health-risk threshold, or a figure that can be directly compared with counts from other studies.

Single-use cup findings are tied to specific tests

Laboratory findings show that some tested cups can release particles into water under particular conditions. They do not establish what every cup releases during an ordinary serving.

NIST research summary, 2022 Water at 100°C was held in LDPE-lined single-use beverage cups for 20 minutes. Researchers reported nanoparticles in the water. This is a laboratory exposure condition, not an estimate for every cup or real-world drink.
Single-use cup study, 2024 Four cup types—polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene-coated paper, and expanded polystyrene—were tested with water at 4°C, 50°C, and 80°C, at selected contact times up to 20 minutes. The study concerns those tested materials and conditions; it does not represent every brand, drink, or pattern of use.

What particle detection means for health

Detection shows that particles were present in a sample; by itself, it does not show that they cause harm. The FDA says: “Current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that levels of microplastics or nanoplastics detected in foods pose a risk to human health.” It also notes that methods for detecting, quantifying, and characterizing these particles are not standardized, and that many studies have variable or limited accuracy and specificity.

Evidence about whether particles are present or released is stronger than evidence about human health effects. Studies of drinks beyond water remain limited: Australia’s 2026 report says they are often small, commonly include only one study per drink type, and use varied methods. The report says available studies of bottled drinks do not establish their contribution to ingestion. WHO’s 2019 report provides foundational context on microplastics in the water cycle, treatment removal, health evidence, and research gaps; it is not a current personal exposure calculation.

  • This bottle is not compatible with standard automotive cupholders; it is best secured in cup holder organizers, door pockets, or bags during transport

There is no established exposure threshold, validated personal test, or proven health benefit from buying a particular cup or filter in the sources cited here. The available evidence also does not support ranking common drinks by total health risk or naming one container as universally safest. Treat material changes as modest precautions, not as medical treatment.
