Because many viewers will first see a static image, design the opening frame to communicate what your product is without relying on motion. Keep the product name or a recognizable product visual legible at thumbnail size. Use movement to clarify or demonstrate something, not merely to add activity.

The first route suits a launch maker who already has a suitable Lottie animation. The second is for someone who wants to build the sequence from their own visuals and control how long each frame appears. The original Product Hunt article describes both workflows; neither route is established as faster or better for every launch.

Method 1: Turn a Lottie animation into a thumbnail
- Find a Lottie animation that fits your product and export it as a GIF. The original workflow suggests adjusting its speed before export.
- In Canva, create a custom-size design measuring 240 × 240 pixels.
- Import the GIF, place it in the square design, and adjust its position so the opening frame reads clearly.
- Export the design as a GIF. Check the resulting file size; compress it only if it is 3 MB or larger, because Product Hunt’s current guidance is under 3 MB.
These steps reflect the workflow described by Serhad iletir in a Product Hunt story published March 9, 2022. They are the author’s instructions, not independently tested interface directions. Canva’s help documentation describes creating a short animated video from a still image, but does not verify every export step above or establish which options are available on each Canva plan.
Method 2: Build a GIF from Canva video frames
- Start a video design in Canva and set the dimensions to a square 240 × 240 pixels.
- Create the frames that will make up the animation. Keep the first frame useful as a standalone thumbnail; adding the product name there can help identify the launch.
- Set how long each frame appears. The 2022 article recommends leaving the first frame visible longer, but this is a design suggestion rather than a Product Hunt requirement.
- Download the design as a GIF, then confirm the final file is under 3 MB before uploading.
The source story describes this sequence at a high level. Canva’s current help confirms a related capability—turning a still image into a short animated video—but does not confirm the precise interface labels, GIF export steps, or plan availability for this workflow. Make the animation readable and restrained
- Give the opening frame a job. It should identify or explain the product before the hover animation begins.
- Keep text legible at 240 × 240 pixels. Remove secondary copy that becomes hard to read when the thumbnail is small.
- Use calm transitions. Avoid flashing, strobing, rapid cuts, and effects that make the message difficult to follow.
- Check the complete GIF. Review the motion as well as the first frame, and verify the exported dimensions and file size before upload.
Does an animated thumbnail help a Product Hunt launch?
Product Hunt’s launch-preparation guide reports that fewer than one third of products that reached Product of the Day used an animated GIF thumbnail. It also reports that about 53% of products that reached Product of the Day since 2021 included a video. The guide’s publication year is not stated. These figures describe products that reached that milestone; they do not show that a GIF or video caused success. Treat animation as an optional way to present your product, not a ranking tactic.
