After creating the base potion, redstone dust can extend its duration, glowstone dust can raise it to Slowness IV for a shorter time, gunpowder can make it splash, and Dragon’s Breath can turn that splash potion into a lingering potion.

Recipe at a glance
The brewing sequence matters. Slowness is not brewed directly from a water bottle: Swiftness is the intermediate potion that the Fermented Spider Eye corrupts into Slowness.

Keep blaze powder in the brewing stand’s fuel slot throughout the process. A brewing stand can process one, two or three bottles at a time, so placing three water bottles in the lower slots is the efficient choice when you have enough glass bottles.

What you need
Brewing stand and blaze powder
The brewing stand is the workstation for every step. Blaze powder supplies its fuel; without fuel, the stand will not begin brewing. Put the powder in the dedicated fuel slot before adding ingredients.
Glass bottles and water
Start with one to three glass bottles filled with water. Empty bottles are not valid potion bases, and each bottle occupies one of the three lower brewing slots.

Nether Wart converts the water bottles into Awkward Potions. This is the required first brewing ingredient for the Swiftness base used by Slowness.
Sugar
Sugar changes each Awkward Potion into a Potion of Swiftness. Do not skip this step: the Fermented Spider Eye conversion requires Swiftness as its input.
Fermented Spider Eye
A Fermented Spider Eye is the conversion ingredient. Craft it from a spider eye, a brown mushroom and sugar, then use the finished item in the brewing stand. The spider eye, mushroom and sugar are the three components; the exact arrangement is simply a crafting-grid recipe rather than a second brewing step.

Optional modifiers
- Redstone dust: extends the potion’s duration.
- Glowstone dust: increases the effect strength, producing Slowness IV, while shortening the listed duration.
- Gunpowder: changes a drinkable potion into a throwable splash potion.
- Dragon’s Breath: used after the splash step to create a lingering potion.
Step-by-step: brew the standard Potion of Slowness
- Fill the bottles. Fill one, two or three glass bottles with water and place them in the brewing stand’s bottle slots.
- Fuel the stand. Put blaze powder in the fuel slot. If the stand has no fuel, the ingredient will not process.
- Make Awkward Potions. Add Nether Wart to the ingredient slot and let the brewing cycle finish. The water bottles become Awkward Potions.
- Create Swiftness. Leave the Awkward Potions in the lower slots, add Sugar, and brew again. The result is one Potion of Swiftness per bottle.
- Convert Swiftness to Slowness. Add the Fermented Spider Eye to those Swiftness potions. When the cycle completes, the bottles become Potions of Slowness.
- Remove the finished bottles. Take the potions out before adding a modifier. The standard drinkable result is Slowness I lasting 1:30.
You can brew all three bottles through the same stages in parallel. The ingredient is consumed for the brewing operation, while the bottles remain in their lower slots and advance to the next potion type.

Minecraft treats the Fermented Spider Eye as a modifying ingredient rather than a normal effect starter. Nether Wart establishes the Awkward Potion, Sugar establishes Swiftness, and the fermented eye reverses that movement effect into Slowness. That is why putting the eye on an Awkward Potion or directly on a water bottle does not follow the required recipe path.
The conversion also makes a speed potion useful even when your goal is the opposite effect. If you already have Swiftness potions, you can skip the Nether Wart and Sugar stages and put the Fermented Spider Eye directly into the brewing stand with those bottles.
Slowness variants and their trade-offs
The potion’s delivery method, duration and strength are separate decisions. Choose the modifier based on whether you need a long debuff, a stronger short debuff or an area effect.

The standard and extended drinkable versions keep Slowness I, but redstone raises the listed duration from 1:30 to 4:00. Glowstone takes the opposite approach: it raises the effect to Slowness IV and reduces the listed duration to 0:20. Treat those as alternatives rather than ingredients to combine in the same branch.

Making a splash Potion of Slowness
After brewing the normal Slowness potion, put it back in the stand and add gunpowder. The output is a throwable splash version. This changes how the potion is delivered; no separate duration value is listed for the splash form, so use the duration of the underlying Slowness potion variant you selected.
Making a lingering Potion of Slowness
First create the splash potion with gunpowder. Then brew that splash potion with Dragon’s Breath. The standard lingering form is listed at 0:22, while the extended lingering form is listed at 1:00. Lingering is useful when the effect should remain in an area instead of being consumed by one drinker or applied by one impact.
What Slowness does
Slowness reduces movement speed by 15% per effect level. Slowness I therefore applies a 15% movement-speed reduction, while Slowness IV applies a 60% reduction under the effect description used by the current Minecraft Wiki reference. The higher level is much stronger, but its listed 0:20 duration makes it a short window for timing an attack, escape or interruption.
A drinkable potion applies the effect to the player who drinks it. A splash potion is selected when you need to throw the effect, and a lingering potion is selected when the affected space matters more than a single hit. These are delivery choices layered on top of the same brewing chain.
Choosing the right version
Use the standard drinkable potion for a dependable debuff
Slowness I for 1:30 is the baseline recipe and the easiest result to verify. It is the sensible default when you do not need a long-duration upgrade, a stronger level or area coverage.

Use redstone when time matters
The extended potion lasts 4:00 at Slowness I. Pick it when the target must remain slowed for a prolonged encounter and the lower strength of level I is acceptable.
Use glowstone for a brief, powerful effect
Glowstone produces Slowness IV for 0:20. This is the high-strength branch, not the long-duration branch. Because the duration is short, apply it when a concentrated slowdown is more valuable than persistence.

Use gunpowder when drinking is impractical
A splash potion lets you throw the effect instead of requiring the recipient to consume it. It is the appropriate delivery change when distance or timing makes a drinkable bottle unsuitable.
Use Dragon’s Breath for an area that should remain affected
Lingering potions are made from splash potions, so they require both the gunpowder and Dragon’s Breath stages. Choose the standard 0:22 lingering duration or the extended 1:00 form according to how long the area needs to remain active.

The brewing stand does nothing
- Check that blaze powder is present in the fuel slot.
- Confirm that the lower slots contain water-filled bottles or the correct potion stage.
- Make sure the ingredient is in the stand’s ingredient slot, not in a bottle slot.
The result is not Slowness
- If you still have Awkward Potions, add Sugar first to create Swiftness.
- If you have water bottles, add Nether Wart before Sugar.
- Use a Fermented Spider Eye, not an ordinary spider eye, for the conversion.
The potion is shorter or weaker than expected
Check which modifier you used. Redstone creates the 4:00 extended Slowness I branch. Glowstone creates Slowness IV for 0:20. They intentionally move the potion in different directions, so a glowstone result is not a failed extended potion.
The potion cannot be thrown
Gunpowder is the delivery modifier. A normal Potion of Slowness is drinkable; it becomes splash only after you brew it with gunpowder.
The lingering recipe does not work
Dragon’s Breath is applied to a splash potion, not directly to the ordinary drinkable bottle. Complete the gunpowder step first, then use Dragon’s Breath for the lingering conversion.
Edition and version note
The documented recipe is Java-oriented. The core chain is Nether Wart to Awkward Potion, Sugar to Swiftness, and Fermented Spider Eye to Slowness, but interface labels and version-specific behavior can differ between Java and Bedrock. If a slot name or result does not match, check the recipe book and brewing interface for the edition and version you are playing rather than assuming that a different ingredient order is required.

In short, brew Swiftness first, then corrupt it with a Fermented Spider Eye. The unmodified result is Slowness I for 1:30; redstone extends it, glowstone strengthens it, gunpowder makes it throwable and Dragon’s Breath makes the splash version linger.
