The simplest homemade Pokémon costume starts with a plain yellow hoodie or sweatshirt. Add removable felt ears, cheek patches and a lightning-bolt tail, then pair the base with dark bottoms and comfortable shoes. This approach gives you a recognizable Pikachu-inspired look without tailoring a full bodysuit, and the detachable pieces make the outfit easier to wash, sit in and reuse.
What you are making
This project is a human outfit inspired by Pikachu rather than a full character replica. The yellow top supplies the color block, while soft felt creates the ears, cheeks and tail that make the reference clear. A hoodie is useful in cold weather; a yellow T-shirt is better for warm climates or for layering over clothes already suited to the temperature.

Use the instructions for a child or an adult by changing the garment size and scaling the paper templates. The construction stays the same: draft on paper, cut matching felt pieces, assemble the ears and tail, and fasten everything so it can be removed.
Materials and tools
- Plain yellow hoodie or sweatshirt, or a yellow T-shirt for warm weather
- Yellow, brown and black craft felt
- Fabric scissors
- Paper, pencil and ruler for templates
- Fabric glue, iron-on adhesive or a needle and thread
- Elastic, ribbon or hook-and-loop fastener
- Optional black leggings, brown shorts and a red-and-white accessory palette
Choose soft, flexible materials. Felt should not have sharp edges or stiff wires that could poke the wearer. If you use craft foam to give the ears shape, keep it thin and fully enclosed between felt layers.

Choose the base layer

Try the garment on over the clothes the wearer will actually use outside. Check the sleeve length, hood position and room around the shoulders before cutting any felt. A comfortable base is more important than an exact shade of yellow.
Plan the templates before cutting
Make full-size paper patterns first. Paper is cheap to resize; felt is not. Place every pattern on the garment and hold it against the wearer to check proportion before you cut.
Draft the ears
Draw two tall, tapered ear shapes. Leave a broad enough lower section for the attachment point and make both ears mirror images. Add a separate black tip pattern rather than trying to paint the felt. If the ears will sit on a headband, leave enough room at the bottom to wrap around or overlap the band.

Draft the cheek patches
Draw two small circles or ovals. Compare them with the hood or shirt front so they look intentional rather than oversized. Keep the patches on fabric, a removable accessory or a prop; do not stick adhesive directly to skin.
Draft the tail
Sketch a lightning-bolt shape in sections so it is easy to cut from felt. Hold the paper tail against the wearer while standing, sitting and turning. A detachable tail should stay within the wearer’s outline and remain short enough for doorways and crowded paths. Prepare a second, matching tail shape if you want a cleaner front-and-back finish.

Build the costume step by step
- Wash and dry the base garment. Removing factory finishes first helps adhesive and fasteners attach more reliably. Follow the garment’s care label.
- Cut paper patterns. Mark left and right ears, ear tips, cheek patches and the tail. Label each piece and note where the attachment will sit.
- Test the layout. Pin or tape the paper pieces temporarily to the hoodie or shirt. Put the garment on and check that the ears do not block peripheral vision, the cheeks do not interfere with the hood opening and the tail will not catch on chairs.
- Trace and cut felt. Cut yellow ear fronts and tail pieces, black ear tips and brown tail sections. Cut duplicates when you want both sides finished. Keep scissors pointed away from the wearer and trim loose fibers.
- Assemble the ears. Place a thin felt or craft-foam layer between matching ear pieces. Glue or stitch around the edge, leaving no exposed hard insert. Add the black tips before closing the edges if that produces a cleaner seam.
- Attach the ears. Use elastic, ribbon or hook-and-loop fastener to connect the ears to a headband or the hood. Removable attachments let you wash the garment and remove the ears for transport. Put the hood up and down several times to ensure the fastener does not pull the fabric.
- Add the cheek patches. Glue or stitch red or dark felt circles to the hood or shirt, or mount them on a face-safe accessory that sits beside the cheeks. Keep the wearer’s eyes, nose and mouth clear.
- Build the tail. Laminate two lightning-bolt felt shapes. Reinforce the lower end with an additional felt tab, then connect that tab to a waistband or belt with hook-and-loop fastener. The tail should release instead of dragging the wearer backward if it catches on something.
- Complete the outfit. Add black leggings or shorts and closed-toe shoes that the wearer can walk in confidently. A red-and-white accessory can suggest the wider Pokémon theme without adding hard or cumbersome props.
- Run a full movement test. Walk, sit, climb stairs, turn the head, raise both arms and practice opening a door. Reposition or remove anything that affects vision, hearing, breathing, hand use or stable walking.
No-sew, sewn and hybrid construction
Choose the attachment method based on how long the costume must last and how often it will be washed. Test a small felt scrap first; some adhesives remain tacky, stain fabric or release in cold weather.

A whipstitch or blanket stitch around the ear and tail edges is sufficient for hand sewing. On a hybrid build, glue the visible felt layers and hand-sew the tail tab, headband connection and any point that will be pulled repeatedly.
Make the ears comfortable and stable
Headwear should stay in place without squeezing. If the ears are on a headband, cover the band’s ends with felt or use a smooth, commercially finished band. If they are on a hood, place the fasteners far enough apart that the ears do not flop into the wearer’s face when the hood moves.
Have the wearer shake their head gently and look over both shoulders. If an ear slides toward the eyes or changes the hood opening, shorten the elastic, widen the attachment area or move the fastener. Never use a rigid point that could press into the scalp during a fall.
Attach a tail that can release
The tail is the part most likely to snag on furniture, railings or other people. A waistband or belt attachment keeps it low and centered, while hook-and-loop fastener allows it to detach under a sudden pull. Reinforce the felt at the base with an extra tab instead of concentrating all the force on a single seam.

Check the tail in a chair, on stairs and in a narrow hallway. It should not drag on the ground, cover the hands or swing into another person. Remove it whenever the wearer needs to sit in a vehicle or move through a particularly crowded doorway.

Finish the look without making it difficult to wear
- Use black leggings or shorts for a simple contrast under the yellow top.
- Choose closed-toe shoes with secure soles; costume appearance should not reduce traction.
- Keep accessories light enough that the wearer can use both hands.
- For a hooded version, make sure the hood opening does not cover the eyes or muffle hearing.
- For a T-shirt version, layer over weather-appropriate clothing rather than adding heavy decorations to the shirt.
Soft felt details are usually enough. Hard plastic, pointed props and oversized accessories add risk without improving the central silhouette.
Safety checks before going outside
The Pokémon Cosplay Costume Showcase rules require the wearer to move safely without assistance and limit a costume to 2.5 m (8 ft) in any direction. Those rules apply to that showcase, but they are a useful conservative check for any public event: keep the costume compact and independently wearable.
- Vision: The ears, hood and cheek pieces must not narrow the wearer’s field of view.
- Hearing: The wearer should hear traffic, doorbells, adults and other pedestrians.
- Breathing: Nothing should cover the mouth or press against the nose.
- Walking: The tail and hems must clear the feet and stairs.
- Hands: The wearer must be able to hold a bag, open a door and steady themselves.
- Edges: Trim loose threads and cover any rough fastener corners.
- Visibility at dusk: Add reflective tape to outerwear if the wearer will walk near traffic. Place it where it does not interfere with the removable costume pieces.
Repeat the test in the actual shoes and outer layers. A costume that feels safe indoors can behave differently once a coat, gloves or wet pavement are involved.
Care, removal and storage
Detach ears, cheek patches and the tail before washing unless the adhesive or garment label explicitly permits laundering with them attached. Hand-wipe felt pieces and let them dry completely before storage. Keep the paper templates in the same container so a damaged piece can be recut next season.

Inspect the tail tab and ear fasteners after every wear. Replace loose hook-and-loop pieces, restitch opened edges and discard any insert that has become exposed. Store the ears flat and keep the tail away from heavy objects that could crease the lightning-bolt shape.

The felt will not stay attached
Remove the piece, clean away loose fibers and test the adhesive on a hidden area. If the bond still fails, switch to hand stitching or add a removable fastener. Do not keep applying glue directly over a failed, flexible layer; it can create a hard lump that irritates the wearer.
The ears flop forward
Use a second felt layer or a thin enclosed foam insert, then widen the lower attachment area. Recheck balance on the headband or hood instead of adding a heavy object to the ear tip.
The tail makes sitting difficult
Move the attachment higher on the waistband, reduce the tail length or detach it for seated activities. A releaseable fastener is preferable to a rigidly sewn tail.

The hood keeps shifting
Move the ear fasteners closer to the hood’s stable seams, or transfer the ears to a separate headband. The wearer should be able to remove the hood without pulling on their ears.

The costume is too warm
Switch from a sweatshirt to a T-shirt, remove nonessential layers and keep the felt details detachable. Warm-weather comfort matters more than matching every accessory.
Keep the design original and clearly personal
Present the result as a personal, Pokémon-inspired costume. Pokémon Support’s policy article, updated January 30, 2026, says it is not in a position to review requests to use Pokémon intellectual property, including characters, names and designs, and asks people not to use it in or associate it with their projects. Do not reproduce official logos, artwork or packaging, sell the outfit as licensed merchandise or imply that Pokémon endorsed it.
Illinois 4-H guidance distinguishes a human costume made from functional clothing and inspired by a character from a full non-human replica. A yellow hoodie with removable felt details fits the former approach. If a school, fair or cosplay event has its own rules, read them before entering; the official Pokémon Cosplay Costume Showcase rules specifically allow bought wigs, shoes, simple accessories and simple base layers such as leotards, jeans or T-shirts.
Optional Pokémon-themed pumpkin activity
Pokémon publishes Halloween pumpkin stencil patterns, including a Gimmighoul silhouette PDF. These files are a separate pumpkin-carving activity, not sewing patterns for a wearable costume. Follow the copyright notices on the page and keep the stencil work separate from the clothing project.
Adapt the project for children and adults
For children
Use a base that leaves room for the clothes worn underneath, and let the child practice removing the tail and ears. An adult should perform the final visibility, stair and traffic check. Avoid attachments that a child cannot release independently.
For adults
Scale the templates to the garment rather than enlarging a child-size pattern without checking balance. A T-shirt, sweatshirt or hoodie can remain an ordinary piece of clothing after the detachable details are removed, which makes the costume practical for commuting or mixed indoor and outdoor events.
