For podcast episodes that should play one after another in the same layout, add a VLC Video Source to an OBS scene and create a playlist of the episode files in the order you want. Turn shuffle off for a predictable sequence, then choose whether the playlist should repeat. If each episode needs its own scene or branding, use Advanced Scene Switcher to trigger a scene change when the relevant media item ends.
Choose the right OBS setup

Prepare your episode files
Use video files available locally to the computer running OBS. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among the supported video formats for Media Source. That list does not mean every file or encoding will necessarily play correctly in every setup, so test your actual episodes in OBS before going live.

Set up one playlist for a continuous layout
- Install VLC. OBS requires the VLC application for the VLC Video Source to appear. Match the application architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If you install VLC while OBS is open, close and reopen OBS before checking the source list.
- Add the source. In the scene that should show the episodes, use the Sources area to add a VLC Video Source.
- Build the playlist. Add the local episode files to the source playlist and arrange them in the intended playback order.
- Set playback behavior. Turn shuffle off if order matters. Enable looping only if you want the playlist to start again after its last item; otherwise leave it non-looping.
- Check the scene. Confirm that the source is visible, sized and positioned correctly, and that the episode audio is routed as intended. Preview the transition from one episode to the next before relying on it for a live broadcast.
With one scene and one continuous layout, the VLC playlist is the direct solution. A change of episode does not itself require a scene transition.
Switch scenes when an episode changes
Use scene automation only if an episode change must also change the OBS scene or presentation. Advanced Scene Switcher is a separate OBS plugin; its macros pair conditions with actions, such as a media condition and a scene-switch action.

- Check compatibility before installing. The OBS Forums listing accessed October 3, 2026 reports Advanced Scene Switcher version 1.36.1 and a minimum requirement of OBS Studio 31.1.1. Plugin compatibility can change, so confirm the current listing for your installed OBS version at Advanced Scene Switcher.
- Create the episode scenes. Make a separate scene for each episode or presentation state that needs different visuals. Add the appropriate media and branding to each scene. OBS’s Sources Guide explains how scenes and sources fit together.
- Add a media condition. In Advanced Scene Switcher, configure a condition for the media source whose playback should trigger the transition.
- Add a scene-switch action. Set the corresponding action to switch to the intended next scene. Configure each transition needed for the episode sequence.
- Select the correct end event. Decide whether the transition should happen when one media item ends or when the entire VLC playlist ends. These are distinct states; the plugin’s update history explicitly distinguishes them for VLC playlists.
- Test the full sequence. Run through the end of an episode and the start of the next in preview. Confirm the condition fires once, the intended scene appears, and the next episode is visible and audible.
The plugin listing documents configuration capabilities, not a guarantee that playback or automation will be problem-free in every setup.

What this does—and does not—automate
- It can advance local episode playback: VLC Video Source supports a playlist that plays multiple items.
- It can change OBS scenes: Advanced Scene Switcher can respond to media conditions and perform scene-switch actions when configured for the desired end event.
- It does not establish automatic livestream shutdown: the documented playback and scene automation behavior does not establish that YouTube Live will end when the playlist finishes. Plan to end the broadcast yourself unless you have separately verified a supported method.
- It does not verify YouTube account eligibility or policy compliance: check current YouTube guidance for live streaming, copyright, and reused content before broadcasting. Having files play correctly in OBS does not grant rights to use them or guarantee platform approval.
Troubleshooting
VLC Video Source is missing
Install VLC, check that VLC and OBS have matching 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, then reopen OBS. The OBS documentation identifies the VLC installation and architecture match as requirements for the source to appear.

The wrong episode plays next
Review the playlist order and confirm shuffle is off. Test the sequence from the beginning rather than assuming the displayed order matches the intended broadcast.
The next episode plays, but the scene does not change
Check that Advanced Scene Switcher is installed and compatible with your OBS version, that its media condition monitors the correct source, and that the scene-switch action names the intended destination. Confirm that you selected the appropriate event: an individual media item ending is not the same as the complete VLC playlist ending.

The playlist stops after the final file
That is expected when looping is disabled. Enable playlist looping if you want playback to start again after the final item. Do not assume this setting also ends the YouTube livestream.

A file appears but will not play as expected
Check the file in a local preview and test the exact episode assets before going live. OBS’s supported-format list is useful for choosing files, but it is not a guarantee for every encoding or media issue.
