For a 1080p prerecorded sermon streamed as a YouTube Live event, create or select the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, connect an encoder with the event’s stream URL and key, and send a 1080p signal using settings matched to the recording. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps at 1080p30 or 17 Mbps at 1080p60, with CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, RTMPS, and AAC stereo audio at 128 kbps. Rehearse with the actual video and check the Live Control Room preview before the service.
Recommended 1080p settings for a prerecorded sermon
Use this as a starting profile for a standard SDR stream. Match the output frame rate to the sermon file when practical; do not convert 30 fps footage to 60 fps simply to use a higher setting.

| Setting | Starting value |
|---|---|
| Resolution | 1920×1080 |
| Frame rate | Match the source; commonly 30 fps if that is how it was recorded |
| Video codec | H.264 |
| Video bitrate | 14 Mbps at 1080p30; 17 Mbps at 1080p60, YouTube’s recommended H.264 live-ingestion bitrates. Listed minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps, respectively. |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz |
| SDR color | Rec. 709 |
| Other video properties | Square pixels and progressive scan |
These are YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations, not finished-video upload settings or a guarantee of how the sermon will look. YouTube transcodes the live input into playback formats for different devices and connections. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and upload encoding recommendations.
Set up the YouTube Live event and encoder
-
Create or select the event
In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select the scheduled stream. Set the event’s privacy and other options before the service. The stream URL is the server destination; the stream key identifies where the encoder sends its feed. Treat the key like a password and do not publish or share it casually. The exact screens may change; use the current controls in YouTube’s Live Control Room setup guidance.

Configure a playback-capable encoder
Choose an encoder workflow that can play or receive the prerecorded sermon and transmit it to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and key. YouTube’s encoder guidance establishes the connection and output requirements, but does not designate one application as best for every church, computer, or video file. Confirm that your chosen software can play the file continuously for the planned event.
-
Set the outgoing video and audio
Enter the profile values above in the encoder. Use H.264 for a straightforward SDR workflow unless your encoder and production chain reliably support another YouTube-listed codec, such as H.265 (HEVC) or AV1. YouTube’s general guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Use the 1080p30 recommendation for a 30 fps source and the 1080p60 recommendation only when retaining a 60 fps source.
-
Choose RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream in transit to and through Google’s servers. HLS is available for supported cases, but YouTube notes that its segmented delivery has higher latency. A prerecorded sermon alone is not a reason to choose HLS; RTMPS is the ordinary starting choice.

-
Check upload capacity at the streaming location
Test upload speed from the actual connection the encoder will use. YouTube recommends about 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. If a backup encoder also sends over the same connection, include its bitrate too. For example, a 14 Mbps primary stream needs more than 14 Mbps available; apply the recommended margin to the combined load rather than treating the nominal stream rate as the full connection requirement. A speed-test result is a snapshot, so reliability and fluctuation matter as well as the peak number. See YouTube’s guidance on bandwidth and encoder settings.
-
Start early, preview, and monitor
Start the encoder ahead of the scheduled event, then inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before starting the live event. Rehearse using the actual sermon or representative playback with similar audio and motion. During the service, monitor stream health and listen for audio problems rather than assuming a successful connection means a good viewer experience. YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance covers encoder setup and preview checks.
Choose the event options for your congregation
Public, unlisted, or private
Set visibility according to who should be able to watch: public for an open audience, unlisted for people with the link, or private for restricted access. Confirm the selection before the event begins; the stream key does not determine who can view it.

Latency and interaction
Lower latency can reduce the delay between the encoder and viewers, but may increase buffering. For a prerecorded sermon with no live interaction, the shortest delay may have little practical value. Choose based on whether the service includes interaction that depends on near-real-time viewing. YouTube’s latency settings explain the trade-off.

DVR
With DVR enabled, viewers can pause and rewind the live stream, then resume where they paused. Decide whether that fits how you want people to follow the service. See YouTube’s live stream DVR guidance.
Automatic resolution detection
YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default. A custom stream key can enable manual resolution settings where needed; use that only if the automatic behavior does not suit the encoder workflow. YouTube documents this in its encoder settings guidance.

Rehearse without making the congregation the test audience
- Play the sermon from beginning to end in the selected encoder, including any opening or closing material.
- Check that the Live Control Room preview shows the intended picture and that speech is audible and in sync.
- Watch stream health while testing; confirm the upload connection has headroom for the full stream and any shared backup feed.
- Verify the event’s visibility, latency choice, and DVR setting against the service plan.
- Make sure the stream key is entered correctly and remains private.
Troubleshoot common problems
The encoder connects, but the preview is black or wrong
Check that the encoder is playing the correct file and that its output is reaching the event associated with the copied stream URL and key. Verify the resolution and frame rate being sent, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live.
The stream buffers or stream health deteriorates
Compare the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate with available upload capacity. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, account for a backup feed on the same connection, and check whether the connection fluctuates. Lowering the output bitrate may reduce load, but it does not fix an unstable connection by itself.
Picture quality is soft or motion looks uneven
Confirm the file’s actual frame rate and resolution, then match the encoder output where practical. Check that the encoder is using the intended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30 or 1080p60, rather than assuming the file’s resolution alone determines the outgoing stream quality.

Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync
Check the encoder’s selected audio source and confirm AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Test representative speech and any music in the sermon; the preview and a real playback check can reveal problems that connection status cannot.
The event starts late or viewers cannot access it
Start the encoder early enough to inspect the preview, and verify the event’s privacy setting and scheduled selection in Studio. Public, unlisted, and private streams have different access expectations; sharing a link cannot make a private event generally accessible.
Copyright and prerecorded sermon content
A prerecorded file is still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules. Confirm that the church has the necessary rights or permissions for every included element, including music, lyrics, video clips, and other third-party material. A live encoder setup does not grant permission, and an unlisted or private event should not be treated as a copyright exemption. YouTube’s copyright guidance explains the platform’s rules. Separately, YouTube monetization eligibility and reused-content review are not determined just by configuring a stream; review the current YouTube channel monetization policies if monetization matters.
