Use Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic for square blocks made from the image’s own colors. Use Layer > New Fill Layer > Pattern when you want a repeating tile or decorative pattern clipped to the template.
Convert the image layer to a Smart Object before using Mosaic, and keep Pattern Fill on its own clipped layer. That preserves the template, lets you change cell size or pattern settings later, and prevents a test from permanently damaging the source artwork.

What a Photoshop mosaic template actually contains
A Photoshop template is normally a layered PSD that already contains design components, masks, effects, and placeholders. It is different from a blank preset: a preset supplies technical canvas settings, while a template provides a starting composition that you customize.
Open a PSD with clearly labeled customization layers. Adobe’s mockup example uses a free Sweatshirt and Tshirt Mockups template opened from Photoshop’s New Document dialog. In a complicated file, look for groups or layers named graphic, design, or custom. These names usually point to the layer whose visible pixels define the product or artwork area.

Before adding an effect, hide placeholder layers such as Your graphic here. Leaving a placeholder visible can make it appear that the mosaic is working when you are actually editing the wrong layer.
Choose between a pixel mosaic and a tiled pattern
These effects are often called mosaics, but they produce different results and use different controls.
| Approach | Visual result | Best use | Editing controls | How the effect is limited |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mosaic filter | Square blocks of color redraw the image and reduce visible detail. | Pixelated portraits, backgrounds, privacy edits, or an abstract version of existing artwork. | Smart Filter controls, including the Mosaic cell-size setting; the filter can be hidden, adjusted, or removed. | Apply it to the whole target layer, or combine it with a mask, selection, Eraser, Marquee, or Lasso. |
| Pattern Fill | A chosen design repeats as a regular tile or surface pattern. | Fabric, packaging, apparel, or any mockup that needs a consistent decorative texture. | Pattern choice, Scale, Angle, and blend mode remain adjustable on the fill layer. | Create a clipping mask so the pattern follows only the target layer’s visible pixels. |
The Mosaic filter redraws pixels as blocks of color. Pattern Fill does not analyze the image and convert it into blocks; it repeats a separate pattern. Decide first whether you want the source image to become chunky pixels or want a new tile design to sit on the template.

- Open the layered PSD. Use File > Open, or open the template from Photoshop’s New Document dialog when it is offered there.
- Inspect the layer stack. Expand groups and identify the layer that defines the visible design area. Names such as graphic, design, and custom are useful clues in complex files.
- Hide placeholders. Turn off layers labeled Your graphic here or similar instructions so they do not cover your work.
- Select the artwork layer. Click the thumbnail or name of the layer whose pixels should receive the effect. If the template uses a clipping or warp structure, select the editable image layer rather than a lighting, shadow, or highlight layer.
- Save a working copy. Use a new filename before experimenting. Keep the original PSD untouched so you can return to the template’s starting state.
Incorrect layer targeting is the most common reason a mosaic appears in the wrong place. If the whole canvas changes, you probably selected a background or full-frame layer instead of the design layer.
Method 1: apply a true pixel mosaic with the Mosaic filter
Convert the artwork to a Smart Object
Right-click the target image layer and choose Convert to Smart Object. You can also use Photoshop’s Smart Object command from the layer context menu. The layer thumbnail changes to indicate that the source is now encapsulated.

This step matters because Mosaic can then be added as a Smart Filter. You can reopen the filter, test different cell sizes, hide it temporarily, or remove it without permanently rewriting the source pixels.
Apply the filter
- With the Smart Object selected, choose Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic.
- In the preview dialog, adjust the cell-size control. A smaller value keeps more facial features, edges, and texture. A larger value produces fewer, coarser blocks and a more abstract image.
- Review the preview at the scale you will actually deliver. A setting that looks subtle at 25% zoom can become strongly pixelated at 100%.
- Click OK to apply the Smart Filter.
The Mosaic filter redraws the selected pixels as blocks of color; it does not add a geometric tile texture from a separate file. Because it is a Smart Filter, double-click its name in the Layers panel whenever you need to change the cell size.

Use the Smart Filter’s visibility control to compare the original and pixelated versions. If the effect is too strong, reopen Mosaic and lower the cell size rather than applying another filter on top. To discard the effect, remove the Smart Filter while leaving the underlying Smart Object intact.
For a softer result, you can also reduce the Smart Filter’s opacity or change its blend mode through the filter settings available in the Layers panel. Keep the source layer inside the Smart Object unaltered unless you intentionally need to edit the image itself.
Method 2: create a repeating mosaic-like pattern
Add a Pattern Fill layer
- Select the layer that defines the visible artwork area.
- Choose Layer > New Fill Layer > Pattern.
- Name the layer so you can identify it later, then confirm the dialog.
- Choose a pattern from the picker. The preview updates as you select different tiles.
- Set the pattern’s Scale and Angle. Smaller scale values create more repeats; larger values create fewer, bigger tiles.
Pattern Fill is separate from the source artwork, so changing the pattern does not rewrite the original image. Adobe describes Pattern Fill layers as a way to showcase custom patterns on product mockups, apparel templates, and packaging designs while keeping edits adjustable.

Clip the pattern to the template artwork
With the Pattern Fill layer directly above the target artwork layer, choose Layer > Create Clipping Mask, or use the clipping-mask command from the layer context menu. The fill now appears only where the target layer has visible pixels. Transparent areas remain transparent, and the pattern no longer covers the rest of the canvas.

Without it, the Pattern Fill spans the entire document and can cover the background, shadows, or garment folds that the template was designed to preserve.
Adjust the pattern after clipping
Double-click the Pattern Fill layer’s thumbnail to reopen its settings. Change the pattern, Scale, or Angle without rebuilding the clipping mask. You can also alter the fill layer’s blend mode to let template shading show through, provided the resulting contrast remains readable.
Pixelate only part of a template
You do not have to mosaic an entire design. Use a selection or mask to isolate the area that should become pixelated.
Protect a subject and pixelate the background
- Select the target image layer or its Smart Object.
- Choose Select > Subject. Photoshop creates a selection around the main subject when it can identify one.
- Choose Select > Inverse so the background, rather than the subject, is selected.
- Apply Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic to the Smart Object.
- Inspect the mask or selection edge at 100% zoom and refine it if halos or unpixelated gaps remain.
This workflow follows Adobe’s documented approach for targeting a background. The quality of the automatic subject selection depends on the image, so check hair, thin straps, transparent objects, and other fine edges manually.

Use a custom area
For a rectangular region, use the Marquee tool. For an irregular region, use the Lasso tool. Apply the Mosaic filter with the selection active, or add a layer mask after filtering so the effect remains easy to revise. Painting black on the mask hides the effect; painting white reveals it again.
The Eraser can remove pixelation from a rasterized result, but a mask is safer because it keeps the hidden pixels available. If the template’s target is already a Smart Object, prefer a mask and Smart Filter over destructive erasing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the template’s lighting and shape intact
Many product templates separate the editable artwork from shadows, highlights, folds, and perspective effects. Apply Mosaic or Pattern Fill to the editable design layer, not to those finishing layers. This preserves the template’s dimensional appearance.
When a Pattern Fill is clipped to the artwork layer, the mockup’s lighting layers can remain above it. If the pattern looks flat, inspect the blend modes and opacity of the template’s original shading layers before changing the pattern itself.
If a Mosaic filter appears to ignore the product shape, confirm that you applied it to the layer containing the warped or masked artwork. Filtering a full-canvas preview layer can create blocks outside the intended garment, package, or screen area.

Troubleshoot common failures
The effect covers the whole canvas
Select the target artwork layer and clip the Pattern Fill to it. For Mosaic, undo the filter, select the correct layer, and reapply it. A full-canvas result usually means the selected layer contains background pixels or that no clipping mask was created.
The mosaic looks unchanged
Increase the Mosaic cell size in the filter dialog. Also verify that the selected layer is visible and contains the image you expect. A hidden placeholder, empty group, or transparent layer can make a successful filter appear ineffective.
The pattern does not follow the product outline
Place Pattern Fill immediately above the layer whose visible pixels define the outline, then create the clipping mask. If the mask is attached to a different layer, move the fill or recreate the clip with the correct target.
Recommended Free Tools
The template’s shadows disappeared
Check whether you accidentally hid or replaced the shadow and highlight layers. Restore their visibility and keep the effect confined to the editable design layer. Pattern Fill’s blend mode can also be adjusted so underlying shading remains visible.
Edges show unwanted blocks or halos
Zoom to 100%, inspect the selection boundary, and refine the mask around hair, thin lines, and transparent objects. A slightly expanded or contracted mask may be needed where the original template includes antialiased edges.
You cannot revise the cell size
If Mosaic was applied directly to raster pixels, undo it and convert the layer to a Smart Object first. Reapply the filter so Mosaic appears beneath the Smart Object as an editable Smart Filter.
Save an editable master and export a delivery copy
- Save the working file as a layered PSD. Keep the Smart Object, Smart Filter, Pattern Fill layer, clipping mask, and template groups intact.
- Use descriptive layer names such as Mosaic 24 px or Pattern Fill – Blue Tile so another editor can understand the setup.
- Save a second copy for delivery. Flatten or export only this copy when the recipient does not need editable layers.
- Before exporting, hide guides, notes, and unused placeholders, then check the image at its final output size.
Keeping the PSD master means you can change the Mosaic cell size, swap the pattern, alter Scale or Angle, or remove the effect without rebuilding the template.
Which workflow should you use?
- Choose Mosaic when the blocks should be generated from the existing image and you want a pixelated or privacy effect.
- Choose Pattern Fill when the visual needs a repeating tile, fabric motif, or decorative surface.
- Use both carefully when a design needs a patterned base plus pixelation in a separate region; keep each effect on its own editable layer or Smart Object.
- Use a mask or clipping mask whenever the effect must follow a product outline or affect only selected areas.
Adobe’s relevant documentation uses different publication dates: its Pattern Fill and template guidance was updated October 5, 2026; the mockup-template tutorial was updated May 24, 2023; and the explanation of templates versus presets was published February 7, 2024. The menu names and layer-based workflow above follow those documented concepts.
