On supported devices, animated Memoji can mirror your expressions and record your voice, but that tracking is for animation—not avatar creation.
How to make a Memoji that looks like you
Build the avatar manually in Messages by selecting appearance options such as skin tone, hairstyle, and eyes. Apple’s support pages show slightly different control labels and sequences, so follow the Memoji option shown in your version of Messages.

- Open Messages and start a conversation or open an existing one.
- Open the app or add-controls panel, then find and select Memoji. It may be farther down the panel.
- Choose the option to create a new Memoji, which may be labeled “New Memoji” or “Add Memoji.”
- Adjust the available appearance features, then tap “Done” to save it.
You can also edit, duplicate, or delete an existing Memoji. Apple’s instructions use the built-in Messages controls and do not require a paid app, accessory, or other purchase. Apple’s Memoji support guide and its iOS 18 Messages guide describe the creation flow.
What facial tracking does—and does not do
Animated Memoji is a separate feature. When you select a Memoji and record a message on a supported device, it can mirror your facial expressions and record your voice. That does not mean your face was scanned to generate the avatar; the avatar’s appearance still comes from the features you selected.

Apple also documents Memoji use in FaceTime and in Clips on compatible devices. Requirements can differ by feature, so compatibility with one use should not be assumed to guarantee every Memoji capability.
Device compatibility and syncing
Using Memoji in Clips
For Memoji in Clips specifically, Apple lists iPhone X or later, or an 11-inch iPad Pro or 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation or later). Apple says this feature works with the device’s front-facing camera. These are Clips requirements, not a complete compatibility list for every Memoji feature. See Apple’s Clips guide.

Some Memoji features use a front-facing camera, and Apple maintains a separate list of models that support Face ID. Face ID compatibility does not establish that Memoji creation scans your face: Apple’s creation steps ask you to choose the avatar’s visual features.
