Camera sensor size is the physical size of the sensor’s active image-forming area. It affects how much of a lens’s projected image is recorded—and therefore the field of view—but it does not, by itself, determine image quality.
What does camera sensor size mean?
A camera sensor converts incoming light into an image. Its size refers to the dimensions of the active area that records that image, usually given in millimetres or described by a format name such as full frame, APS-C or Micro Four Thirds.

Format names are useful shorthand, not guarantees of one identical set of dimensions across every camera. In particular, APS-C sensors vary by manufacturer and model.

| Format or example | Active-area dimensions | Diagonal or crop-factor context |
|---|---|---|
| Full frame | 24 × 36 mm, as defined by Canon Academy | Approximately 43.3 mm diagonal in Canon Academy’s comparison |
| APS-C example | 22.5 × 15 mm, in Canon Academy’s example | Approximately 27 mm diagonal and 1.6× crop factor in that example |
| Fujifilm APS-C X Series example | 23.5 × 15.6 mm, as listed by Fujifilm | Fujifilm gives a 1.5× conversion factor |
| Micro Four Thirds example | 18 × 13.5 mm, as listed by Fujifilm | Fujifilm gives a 2× conversion factor; the system FAQ describes the sensor diagonal as about half that of a 35-mm sensor |
These are source-specific format and product-family examples, not a promise that every sensor using the same format label has precisely the same active-area dimensions. Canon Academy’s and Fujifilm’s sources do not state publication years for these figures.

What is crop factor and how do I calculate it?
Crop factor compares the diagonal of a reference sensor—usually full frame—with the diagonal of the sensor in question. In simplified form: crop factor = reference sensor diagonal ÷ the other sensor’s diagonal. The result depends on the dimensions used and on the stated reference format.
A smaller sensor records a smaller central portion of the circular image projected by a lens. With the same lens and camera position, it therefore captures a narrower field of view than a larger sensor. Nikon Australia explains this central-area crop, while Fujifilm describes field of view as the result of focal length and sensor format working together.

- 【Wide Usage】This camera sensor cleaning kit not only can clean the camera sensor, can also clean the edge of lens, mobile phone, monitor, lens, etc.
“Equivalent focal length” is a way to express that field-of-view comparison against a reference format. It does not mean the lens’s physical focal length changes. For example, Nikon UK says the DX mirrorless bodies it describes have APS-C-sized 20.9-megapixel sensors and a 1.5× crop factor relative to full frame. That is a specific body-family example, not a universal figure for every APS-C camera.

Field of view
Sensor format changes how much of the lens’s projected image is captured. This is why the same lens can show a narrower view on a smaller sensor, even though its focal length remains unchanged.

- WHAT CAUSES DUST SPOTS & HOW THIS FIXES IT: Dark spots appear when dust stick to your camera sensor, especially after lens changes. Our alcohol-free sensor cleaner safely lifts dust and smudges without harming coatings, and each 24mm full-frame swab is individually vacuum-sealed to ensure it is completely free of dust and debris before use.
- PROVEN, TRUSTED & SAFE FOR OVER A DECADE: UES sensor cleaning kits have been on the market for more than 10 years and are trusted by thousands of photographers worldwide. Our proven, gentle formula is completely safe for sensitive CMOS & CCD sensors and in-body image stabilization (IBIS) systems used by Sony, Canon, and Nikon.
- SAFE EVEN FOR FIRST-TIME CLEANING The flexible swab handle provides controlled, even pressure across the full-frame sensor, helping prevent streaks and scratches. Clear, predictable movement makes it easy to safely clean your camera at home without special tools or prior experience.
- NO STREAKS, NO LINT, NO FIBERS The precisely sized 24mm swab head perfectly matches full-frame sensors for simple, one-direction cleaning. Ultra-fine microfiber and individual vacuum sealing help prevent lint, streaking, or introducing new dust during the cleaning process.
- FAST, PROFESSIONAL-GRADE MAINTENANCE: Keep your camera gear in peak condition without the wait. Whether you are managing a camera rental fleet, running a photography studio, or maintaining your personal gear at home, this kit provides a quick, reliable solution for routine maintenance after lens changes, travel, or outdoor shooting.
Camera-system design
Sensor size is one factor in the design of a camera and its lenses. The Micro Four Thirds standard describes its aim as combining image quality with compactness and low weight through lenses designed for that format. That is a system-level design goal, not a guarantee that every smaller-format camera or lens will be lighter or better for every use.
Image quality
A larger sensor does not automatically produce a better photograph. Image quality also depends on resolution, pixel dimensions, lens performance, exposure, processing and the intended output. Canon notes that when total pixel counts are similar, a larger sensor can have physically larger pixels; that is one consideration, not a complete rule for judging image quality.

How to compare sensor formats fairly
When comparing cameras or formats, keep these questions separate rather than treating the format name as a complete measure of performance:
- What are the sensor’s actual active-area dimensions and aspect ratio?
- What is its diagonal-based crop factor, and which reference format is being used?
- What field of view will the same focal-length lens record?
- How are the camera and lens systems designed in size, weight and intended use?
- What are the pixel count and other relevant image-quality factors, considered separately from sensor dimensions?
The Micro Four Thirds System FAQ describes the standard as “an extension of the Four Thirds System, optimized for mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras.”
