FontForge can inspect or extract some fonts from PDFs, but it does not directly embed a font into an existing PDF. To clear a “Font Not Embedded” warning, first identify the font. If you have the editable source document, the most reliable route is usually to enable permitted font embedding and export a new PDF. If you only have the PDF, Acrobat Pro’s Preflight tools may offer a fixup, provided the font is available and its embedding settings allow it.
What the warning means
A PDF can contain the text without containing the font data needed to display it exactly as intended. A viewer may substitute another font, which can change character shapes, spacing, line breaks, or page layout. Adobe explains that a PDF may contain a full font or only a subset of the characters used; embedding helps prevent substitution. Adobe: Font embedding and substitution in PDFs with Distiller

A “subset embedded” status means the PDF contains a portion of the font covering characters used in the document. That is different from a font being unembedded. Check the exact font and status before choosing a repair.

Not as a documented PDF-repair workflow. FontForge can read many font formats and may be able to read fonts contained in some PDFs. However, PDF is not designed to transport fonts, and fonts recovered from a PDF may be incomplete because of subsetting and other optimization. FontForge documentation

- Create a mix using audio, music and voice tracks and recordings.
- Customize your tracks with amazing effects and helpful editing tools.
- Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
- Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time
- Use one of the many other NCH multimedia applications that are integrated with MixPad.
FontForge’s Generate Font function creates a font file in a supported outline or bitmap format. Generating a TTF or OTF does not insert that font into an existing PDF or prove that the PDF’s warning has been fixed. FontForge: Generate Fonts
Use FontForge when you need to inspect or work with a font file, not as a substitute for a PDF-aware embedding workflow. If the font was extracted from the PDF, do not assume it is a complete or reusable copy.

Identify the font and its embedding status
- Open the PDF’s document properties. In Acrobat, open the document properties and select the Fonts tab. Record the exact font name and whether it is embedded, subset embedded, or not embedded. The label and navigation may vary by Acrobat version.
- Check for font issues in Preflight. Acrobat Pro users can use Preflight to inspect the PDF and, where appropriate, apply a selected fixup. Adobe’s Preflight guidance covers inspecting and correcting PDF content; available tools can vary by version. Adobe: Analyze documents using the Preflight tool
- Confirm you have the right font. Check whether the named font is installed or otherwise available to the application performing the repair. A similarly named font is not necessarily the same font.
Choose the repair route that matches what you have
| Route | Use it when | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Re-export from the source application | You have the editable document and the intended font. | Export settings must allow embedding, and the font’s vendor setting must permit it. |
| Acrobat Pro Preflight | You need to inspect or attempt a PDF-level fixup and have access to the font. | Results depend on the PDF, font availability, embedding permission, and Acrobat version. |
| FontForge | You need to inspect or generate a font file. | PDF-extracted fonts may be incomplete; font generation alone does not repair PDF embedding. |
| Replace the font | The original font is unavailable or cannot be embedded. | Glyph shapes and text metrics may change, so layout needs review. |
If you have the editable source document
- Open the original document in the application used to create it.
- Confirm that the intended font is available and that the document is not silently using a substitute.
- In the application’s PDF export or publishing settings, enable font embedding if that option is available. Exact labels vary by application and version.
- Export a new PDF, then inspect its Fonts list or run Preflight to confirm the font is embedded or subset embedded.
- Review the pages for changed line breaks, spacing, or glyphs before replacing the old PDF.
Adobe recommends embedding fonts in the authoring application when producing the PDF. This route avoids relying on a partial font recovered from the PDF itself. Adobe: Analyze documents using the Preflight tool

Acrobat Pro’s Preflight workflow can inspect a PDF and apply available fixups, including font-related corrections in supported circumstances. Open Preflight, inspect the reported font issue, and select an applicable fixup only if the correct font is available and embedding is permitted. Adobe notes that tools and labels may differ across Acrobat versions. Adobe: Analyze documents using the Preflight tool

Adobe’s instructions also describe embedding a font in Acrobat, but a fixup cannot conjure the original font from nothing. If the font is missing, restricted, or only recoverable as an incomplete subset, obtain the correct font and confirm permission, or use a properly licensed replacement. After saving, reopen the output and check both the font status and page appearance.
Respect font embedding permissions
Font embedding is controlled in part by the font vendor’s settings. Adobe states: “A font can be embedded only if it contains a setting by the font vendor that permits it to be embedded.” Adobe: Font embedding and substitution in PDFs with Distiller (updated September 23, 2025).

- Transform audio playing via your speakers and headphones
- Improve sound quality by adjusting it with effects
- Take control over the sound playing through audio hardware
If embedding is prohibited, FontForge or another font editor is not a legitimate way to remove that restriction. Use a font whose license permits the intended use, or contact the font owner for guidance. A replacement can change text width and glyph appearance, so inspect the revised PDF carefully.
Verify the repaired PDF
- Reopen the saved output, not just the original document.
- Check the Fonts tab or run Preflight again to confirm the intended font is embedded or subset embedded.
- Inspect pages with the affected text for substitution, missing glyphs, changed line wrapping, or layout shifts.
- If verification fails, return to the source document if possible, or obtain the correct permitted font before trying another PDF fixup.
For PostScript-to-PDF conversion through Distiller, Adobe documents adding font locations so Distiller can find fonts during conversion. That guidance applies to that conversion workflow; it is not a universal repair method for any existing PDF. Adobe: Font embedding and substitution in PDFs with Distiller
