Turn on Reachability to bring the top of the screen within thumb range, and use the iPhone’s one-handed keyboard layout to shift keys toward either thumb. Both are built-in controls; the right choice depends on whether you’re reaching for an upper-screen control or typing.
Bring the top of the screen within reach with Reachability
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch and turn on Reachability.
- In portrait orientation, activate it using the gesture for your iPhone model:
- Face ID models: Swipe down on the bottom edge of the screen.
- Models with a Home button: Lightly double-tap the Home button.
- The top half of the screen moves down. Tap that upper half to return to the full-screen view.
Apple describes Reachability as a way to lower the top half of the screen when using iPhone with one hand in portrait orientation. It addresses upper-screen reach; it does not reposition the keyboard keys.

Shift the keyboard toward your thumb
- Open a text field so the onscreen keyboard appears.
- Touch and hold the Emoji button or the keyboard-switch key.
- Choose the left-handed or right-handed keyboard layout to move the keys toward that side.
- To restore the centered layout, tap the arrow at the left or right edge of the keyboard.
This is useful for portrait typing: Reachability lowers screen content, while the one-handed keyboard moves the keys themselves.

Choose an adjustment for the task

Use landscape when a wider keyboard matters more
Rotate the iPhone to landscape for a larger keyboard in many common apps, including Mail, Messages, Notes, and Safari. This gives you more keyboard width but means holding the phone in landscape rather than keeping it in portrait with keys shifted toward one thumb.

Use Zoom for visibility, not reach
If text or interface details are too small to see, open Settings > Accessibility > Zoom. Zoom can magnify the full screen or a resizable window. Full-screen magnification may require panning to view content outside the enlarged area. Apple’s Zoom guide also describes Follow Focus, Smart Typing, a Zoom Controller, and an Accessibility Shortcut.
Reduce tapping with other built-in options
If reaching or tapping remains difficult, iPhone includes other mobility and input options. Depending on what works for you, consider Voice Control, Siri, Dictation, Switch Control, Bluetooth accessories, AssistiveTouch, or Back Tap. Find accessibility features under Settings > Accessibility; these are alternatives to explore, not prerequisites for using Reachability or the shifted keyboard.
