If you use the regular Gemini app, review Keep Activity in your Google Account, minimize sensitive information in prompts, and take built-in warnings about suspicious content seriously. Gemini Apps do not expose the same configurable harm-filter thresholds documented for developers using the Gemini API or Google Cloud Agent Platform. Whichever version you use, treat retrieved material and generated answers as untrusted: verify claims and test code only in an authorized environment.
First, identify which Gemini you use
“Gemini” can mean the consumer Gemini Apps on the web or mobile, or a developer environment such as the Gemini API and Google Cloud Agent Platform. Their safety controls are different. In Gemini Apps, the relevant choices are mainly privacy and activity controls, alongside Google’s built-in handling of suspicious content. The developer platform documents configurable content-filter thresholds; those are not settings in the consumer app.

| Gemini Apps | Review Gemini Apps Activity and the Keep Activity choice in Google Account controls; heed warnings and use the available feedback or reporting controls. | Google describes built-in detection that may warn, block input, or exclude suspicious content. It is not a guarantee that every malicious instruction will be caught. |
| Gemini API / Google Cloud Agent Platform | Google Cloud documents configurable content filters and thresholds for certain harm categories, alongside non-configurable filters. | Exact settings, defaults, applicable models, and console labels depend on the current model and environment. For Gemini Apps: review privacy and activity controls
Choose whether to keep activity
Review Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub and the activity controls in your Google Account. Decide whether retaining Gemini Apps Activity and permitting its use for service improvement fit the sensitivity of your work.

Google says a subset of chats may be reviewed by human reviewers. Turning Keep Activity off stops future chats from being reviewed to improve Google services, but it does not stop processing needed to respond or to help protect Google, users, and the public. Temporary chats are not a promise that no safety-related processing occurs.
#1 Best Overall
Remove secrets before sharing material
Do not paste passwords, API keys, access tokens, personal information, confidential customer details, or internal-only incident material into a chat unless you are authorized to share it and accept the applicable data handling. Redact sensitive fields from reports, logs, packet captures, code, and documents before submitting them. Google’s privacy guidance advises against entering confidential information you would not want human reviewers to see or Google to use for service improvement where the relevant settings permit that use.
Handle prompts, documents, and links as untrusted
Cybersecurity research often involves content that could contain instructions aimed at manipulating an AI system. Malicious content may arrive in material you share or reference. Google’s guidance on prompt injection and malicious content says Gemini Apps may detect suspicious material and warn, block input, or exclude the suspicious content from processing. These defenses reduce risk; they do not establish that every prompt injection will be detected.
Rank #2
- Pay attention to warnings and do not try to work around a block to obtain disallowed content.
- Be cautious with untrusted links, shared chats, and Canvas apps from unknown providers.
- Keep retrieved pages and uploaded files in the role of evidence to inspect, not instructions to obey.
Verify answers and test generated code safely
Gemini can be inaccurate or hallucinate, including about how it works. Google says: “Gemini Apps may provide inaccurate or inappropriate responses about people, so double-check its responses.” See Google’s guidance on Gemini Apps responses.

For API and Cloud developers: configure filters for the application
Google Cloud documents configurable filters for categories including hate speech, harassment, sexually explicit content, and dangerous content. It also describes non-configurable filters that address certain prohibited content and personally identifiable information. These filters act as a barrier; they do not directly change model behavior. See the Google Cloud safety and content filters documentation for the applicable model and environment.
For an explicitly authorized cybersecurity application, select thresholds through testing with the inputs and outputs the application is intended to handle. Stricter thresholds can block more content, but may also interfere with legitimate security analysis; looser thresholds increase the need for application-level review. This is a design trade-off, not a published comparative performance result.
- Use access controls and limit who can submit requests or view results.
- Validate outputs before they reach users or trigger actions.
- Set logging according to the sensitivity of the data, and use human review where the risk warrants it.
- Do not lower filters or attempt prompt-injection bypasses to obtain content disallowed by policy.
Keep cybersecurity work authorized and policy-compliant
Google’s Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy identifies dangerous or illegal activity and attempts to compromise Google service security, including circumventing protections through prompt injection, as misuse examples. Google says it uses automated systems and human review to detect potential misuse, and confirmed violations may lead to product or account restrictions. This does not mean all cybersecurity research is prohibited: keep work lawful, authorized, and defensively scoped, and do not assume any particular prompt will be accepted.
