What Happens When You Factory Reset an Unlocked Galaxy Note 20?

A factory reset erases internal Note 20 data, leaves external SD-card data untouched, and may require the previously registered Google Account during setup. It does not establish a change to carrier-unlock status.

Factory-resetting an unlocked Galaxy Note 20 erases the phone’s internal user data and returns it to initial setup. It does not, based on the available Samsung guidance, establish a change to the phone’s carrier-unlock status. A reset can also trigger Google account verification if Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is active.

What a factory reset removes

Samsung’s Galaxy Note20 5G / Note20 Ultra 5G user manual says a factory data reset permanently erases data stored on the device. That includes Google and other account settings, system and app data and settings, downloaded apps, music, photos, videos, and other personal files. Anything stored only on the phone should be backed up before you proceed.

A reset is not itself a backup. Google says account data that was backed up may be restored, but apps and their data are uninstalled, and some app data may not be included in Google backup. See Google’s Android factory-reset guidance and check any important apps for their own backup or transfer options.

The microSD card is not erased

The Note20 manual states: “Any data stored on an external SD card is not affected.” If you are selling or giving away the phone, remove the card or erase it separately if you do not want its contents to go with the device.

Does resetting an unlocked Note 20 lock it again?

The cited Samsung reset guidance explains what the reset erases but does not say that it changes carrier-unlock status. Do not treat a factory reset as a way to unlock a carrier-locked phone, or assume it will revoke an existing unlock. Unlock eligibility and status depend on the specific device and carrier history; ask the carrier if you need confirmation for your phone.

Could the phone ask for the old Google account?

Yes. If Factory Reset Protection is active, the Note20 manual says setup after a reset requires the username and password of a Google Account previously registered on the phone. Samsung also warns that a button-based reset can prompt for Google account information. Without the required account credentials, you may not be able to complete setup.

Before you reset

  • Back up photos, files, and any app data you need. Verify that important data is actually included in the backup; some apps use separate backup methods.
  • Confirm you know the Google Account username and password associated with the phone, along with its screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password. Google recommends confirming account access before resetting.
  • If you recently changed the Google Account password, wait 24 hours before resetting. Samsung’s manual says a password reset may take 24 hours to sync to devices, and Google gives the same wait recommendation.
  • Remove the microSD card if the phone is changing hands and you want to keep its contents.
  • Check the reset prompt and ask your carrier about eSIM handling if relevant. The available guidance does not establish whether every Note20 variant retains or removes an eSIM profile during reset.

Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary with service provider, software version, and phone model, so labels may differ slightly from those below.

Reset with buttons if Settings cannot be opened

Samsung’s UK recovery instructions include the Note20 among models that use the Volume Up, Home, and Side buttons to open recovery. The exact button sequence and screens can vary by model and software, so follow Samsung’s current instructions for the precise device rather than relying on a generic button sequence: How do I perform a factory reset on my mobile device? A recovery reset can still lead to Google account verification if FRP is active.
