How to Make a Handwriting Font Online and Export It as TTF

Make a handwriting font online by drawing glyphs in a browser or filling and scanning a character template, then preview and test the exported TTF.

Yes—you can turn handwriting into a TTF font using a browser-based drawing tool or an online template workflow. The key difference is how you enter the characters: draw each glyph directly on screen, or fill out and scan a template. For precise outline editing, a separate desktop font editor is another option.

Choose how to enter your handwriting

Workflow How you add characters What the documented tools offer
Draw in the browser Draw characters with a mouse, touchscreen, or pen. Browser Kitty’s Handwriting Font Maker says it can export a TTF and preview the generated font in the browser. Its page lists per-glyph width tuning, kerning, ligatures, and randomized alternate glyphs as unsupported. See Browser Kitty’s tool page.
Fill and scan a template Customize a character template, write in its cells, then scan it. Calligraphr describes post-scan character touch-up and height or spacing adjustments, as well as TTF or OTF output. It also documents character randomization and Pro ligatures. See Calligraphr’s feature page.
Edit in a desktop font editor Work with glyph outlines in font-editing software. FontForge documents glyph editing and TrueType generation. This is not a browser workflow; its documentation notes that TTF uses quadratic splines, which can be harder to edit. Read FontForge’s TrueType documentation.

Make a basic font by drawing in the browser

  1. Open the font maker. Browser Kitty describes an in-browser tool for drawing characters and exporting a TTF.
  2. Choose an input method. Draw with a mouse, touchscreen, or pen. A stylus is optional; the tool also lists mouse input.
  3. Draw the characters you need. Keep forms recognizable and consistent, especially for characters that look alike in your handwriting.
  4. Preview and export. The page describes loading the generated TTF back into the browser for preview before export.
  5. Install and test the font in your intended application. Check that the characters look right and that spacing is usable. Behavior can differ between applications, and the tool’s page does not guarantee identical results everywhere.

This route is suited to a straightforward personal font. The tool’s page says it does not support per-glyph width tuning, kerning, ligatures, or randomized alternate glyphs. If any of those features are essential, confirm the current tool capabilities or choose a workflow with the controls you need.

Use a template when you prefer writing on paper

  1. Set up a character template. Calligraphr describes templates that can be customized for a selected character set, with adjustable cell sizes.
  2. Write each character in its cell. Follow the template layout so the scanned characters can be associated with the right glyphs.
  3. Scan the completed template and import it. The documented workflow uses a scan to bring the handwritten characters into the font process.
  4. Correct individual characters. Calligraphr says characters can be modified after scanning, including touch-up and height or spacing adjustments.
  5. Generate and test the font. The company says fonts created with Calligraphr are standard font files in TTF or OTF format. Test the exported file in the application where you plan to use it.

Calligraphr also documents character randomization and Pro ligatures. Those features may matter if you want repeated letters to vary or particular letter combinations to join; check the service’s current feature and plan details before relying on them, since availability by plan is not established here.

When to use a desktop editor for glyph refinement

If you need to alter glyph outlines rather than just touch up scanned characters, FontForge is a desktop route. Its documentation covers creating a font, editing glyph outlines, and generating TrueType output. It is not a browser service, and editing the quadratic splines used in TTF files can be more difficult. Choose it when outline-level control is worth the additional editing work.

Check the font before using it for real work

  • Inspect the full character set you plan to use. A font only helps if it includes the letters and symbols required by your text.
  • Look for consistency. Compare character height, baseline, stroke weight, and forms that could be mistaken for one another.
  • Check spacing in words and sentences. A glyph that looks good alone may sit awkwardly beside another character.
  • Test in the destination application. Previewing in a font maker is useful, but it does not establish identical rendering or installation behavior in every target app.
  • Check the service’s current terms before uploading scans. The cited feature pages do not establish comparative privacy or how handwriting files are handled.
