Google says accredited educational institutions create and manage school accounts. A teacher working at a school should therefore sign in with the account the institution provides, rather than setting up a class with a personal Gmail address.

If you do not know your school login details, or cannot create a class, contact the school’s teacher, IT team, or Workspace administrator. They can confirm whether the school has enabled Classroom and help resolve account access or permissions.
How do personal and school accounts differ?
The distinction affects who manages the account, available education features, and operating limits—not just the email address used to sign in.

Does “free” mean a school has no costs?
The personal-account option is free for the personal uses Google describes. For school teaching, the documented route is for the institution to sign up for Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals. That does not establish what a particular school pays for its overall technology, contract, or any optional Workspace edition. Ask the school administrator or consult the school’s current Workspace quote for its own costs.

What about student privacy and ads?
Google states that its Education services do not contain ads and that data from users of Workspace core services is not used for advertising. That is Google’s stated policy; it is not an independent verification of a school’s configuration or practices.
